I am so sorry for your loss. Twenty-Seven years ago my wife and I adopted McKenna, a border collie rescue. We loved McKenna immediately after bringing her home. Unfortunately, around the second day, McKenna became ill and ultimately passed three days later. Long story short, we still remember and miss McKenna. Ellie Mae will always hold a place in your hearts. She came into your life for a reason, and you will never forget her.

You did your best with Ellie May. Crap happens, especially with animals. Grew up on a dairy farm and as a young child felt the exhilaration of new birth when a litter of kittens would arrive and the depths of sorrow when a cow would lay on a kitten or cat. Flat cat syndrome was only too real. It happens, it wasn't done with any malicious intent and you did everything you could to rectify the problem and treat her. Don't beat yourself up. Grieve your loss, allow the kids a safe place to discuss their feelings while letting them know this is a part of the circle of life. Recently ran across a 60 year old black and white picture of myself, brother and cousins with a shovel in hand at one of the many burial and funerals we had for one of our pets. My great nieces and nephews tried recreating the picture when they helped to bury my cat Toby in July when he passed away at age 16. Hugs to all of you!

So although sad you did everything possible to save her. Remember life goes on and living the life you've chosen or if you lived in suburbia sometimes things happen. Dear Mel and Gary ❤ in my eyes, you have absolutely no blame in what happened with Ellie-May. And everybody who have had different kind of livestock knows, that sometimes things happens with your animals, that is impossible to explain or foresee. I don’t think the dogs had anything to do with the situation, and I don’t think it was the wrong approach to put the animals together all at once ether. Sorry for the loss. We had a mule born and some how got a bad knee that the vet was coming out and cleaning the wound for about 3 weeks. The infection got into the bone tissue and had to make the decision to put her down

If she had a prolapse it just happens! It's no one's fault it just happens! If a rectal prolapse,she could have struggled having a #2 and caused it to happen! The dogs couldn't have done this! It could have been caused by a illness! If it was a vagina prolapse it is common to have with older goats that's had several births! Don't be so hard on yourselves! It's not your fault! My daughters dog had a prolapse. Other than valley fever, he was a good healthy dog.. but they had him put down he was older, and it wasn't a guarantee that he would be ok.. so dont be hard in yourself.. God bless 🙏

Mel… that is farm life. We had a ranch on Guam and many animals; caribou, pigs, chickens, etc.. I’m confident you both did everything you could for her. You even took her to the vet which some ranchers don’t. I honestly don’t believe it was a dog attack. There would be signs of a tussle. She would have other injuries. I know our animals are like our family and you would never put them in danger. You both are very hard on yourselves 😢. You really shouldn’t be. I love that you both care for your animals ❤❤❤
