Good morning from P2Farm in Central Indiana, suggestion place bright colored Pool noodles on the hydrant pipes for insulation and provide a bright color so when equipment is moving around them they will be visible. Having been in Facility Maint. and equipment repair for 35 years, I see minor things you do, I question. But overall you are doing a great job. You have given me some good ideas for our farm. Like the hoop house. We love watching the Goats and Figaro. Be Safe!

@@rupe53 Actually YES they can and do. If you live where it gets frigid cold, such as NH (or Spokane WA where I used to live), it can get cold enough the cold travels down the pipe and can freeze the pipe that does have water... a problem we never had again once we insulated the pipe from ground to handle.
@rupe53
@rupe53 3 жыл бұрын
@@ubetchya78 ... yes, you can get some cold transmitted down the pipe, but I suspect this is more a case of the depth being marginal. (not enough) There are charts available telling us the earth temp at certain depths in various areas. I'm not an expert but I would guess you'd want to be down enough to maintain something above 45 degrees to gain a little margin for error. In my area (Ct) 4 ft below grade is near 48 degrees. If you are close to a foundation it's a bit higher. I have a water line at 28 inches below grade going into a shallow crawl area and it hasn't frozen in 30 years. OTOH, 2 ft away from the foundation it takes a dive to near 4 ft deep. Obviously the house leaks enough heat and the bushes hold a little in there as well.

Al, it may have already been mentioned but 2 points: 1 you need to place rocks under where you have your spigots to help prevent mud accumulating. 2. I would attach some sort of pole with flags on the hydrants so you can see them and don’t accidentally run over them later after the grass starts growing and you start mowing. Just Sayin! Love the progress thus far.

Those trenches were deep enough to kill. Well, we know that didn't happen, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing the videos! But please be careful, Lumnahs! Not sure how old your children are, I had struggles with my girls in their youth but they are in their 20s now and to my relief they are both incredibly hard working.👏🏻 kids learn just as much by example as by instruction. My eldest is 25 and works in a huge factory. Her mill manager wants to move her into management after just 2 years in the industry. He has told us she is hands down one of his hardest workers he has and there are over 600 employees. Keep it up! Someday you will be excited to celebrate their accomplishments with them and feel blessed that your efforts helped put them on the path to success 😁👍🏻

Another homesteading KZbinr - Red Poppy Ranch - is looking for some tips and tricks on how to set things up and get organized for raising goats and harvesting milk. I mentioned your channel. NOW I see that you could use some tips from them as he was a master plumber and has a great system for installing field hydrants and calculating water pressure, etc. The excavators will tell you that you want to put sand or gravel down under anything you might bury... I don't know why. I'm am always educated and entertained while watching you work, so thank you for sharing all of this with us.

You ever seen those Roman stone built viaducts built around 2000 years ago. Transporting water maybe 50 kilometers, enough to supply the needs of a large town. Mostly using gravity but now and again a water wheel used to lift water to a new height to continue the flow, using the flow to lift the flow higher. All over Europe where the Romans settled, many of them in perfect condition today. Roman ingenuity?.

There is a formula for that. 1 foot of vertical elevation change creates 0.433 PSI of water pressure. So, for example, 40 feet of head(vertical elevation ) is going to be about 17 PSI. (40 ft head x 0.433 psi/ft = 17.3 PSI.)

Congratulations on your water system success. I admit that I was pretty skeptical at first, but in my defense, it was pretty hard to tell the elevation difference from the videos. I have since found a topo map of your area and can confirm that there is approximately 20 foot of head difference where your line terminates. This will increase as you extend the water line further towards the north and east. (Correction: More north than east) Hint: When applying Teflon tape to right hand threads, always wrap in the clockwise direction when facing the open end.

Dad's favorite quote "touch it once" a gabion fence backfilled with smaller stones would be a great use to keep out predators, secure livestock, permanent stop for rock. Great job on the water sysrem.

Ed Deetz ~ You win the internet today, at least for me! I'd never heard of gabion fencing before reading your comment so I looked it up before going any further. They can be absolutely beautiful! I sent a link to my brother and s.i.l. because I doubt they'd heard of them either, and my brother has been doing a lot of decorative rock-work around their property in the last few years. Thanks for the introduction to something new!

I discovered that I had seen another KZbinr do this to make pillars at the entrance to his property. He used wire mesh fencing.

Good morning Lumnah family!! Loving the progress! I have a couple of recommendations for you! First, a load of gravel in the low spot, and second, ether paint your faucets bright orange or put flags on them. Might keep someone from backing over one of them. Have a spectacular day! See you all on Tue. God Bless you all!!

Ive watched you putting teflon tape on fittings several times now. You need to flip the roll over so that you're feeding it from the backside of the roll. It is just much easier to control and feed the tape when you do that.

Totally agree and he needs to go clockwise looking from the fitting end. But hey I've watched plumber's do wrong for years lol

Would it have made more sense to crown the dirt on top of the trench to compensate for the settling that is sure to occur over time?
@derekread8220
@derekread8220 3 жыл бұрын
That was my thought. As the ground has been dug up it will settle and will in all probability leave a continuous depression which could result in water from the channel just near the water reservoir diverting down it causing erosion, even though the ground has been re-seeded.

The tractor weighs about 5000lbs. I would think it is a decent compactor by running it up and down the trench many times. It will still settle a little more though. Filling the bucket would add another 2000lbs to help and I don't know if he has filled tires which would add at least 1000lbs more.

I noticed in the your last video that the dock was alittle wobbling. If you add some water to the blue buckets, it will make it more stable. It will sit lower in the water but worth it.

A useful tip when winding on PTFE tape - go with the thread, otherwise it's inclined to be cleared out rather than making the joint.
