Good morning from P2Farm in Central Indiana, suggestion place bright colored Pool noodles on the hydrant pipes for insulation and provide a bright color so when equipment is moving around them they will be visible. Having been in Facility Maint. and equipment repair for 35 years, I see minor things you do, I question. But overall you are doing a great job. You have given me some good ideas for our farm. Like the hoop house. We love watching the Goats and Figaro. Be Safe!

@@rupe53 Actually YES they can and do. If you live where it gets frigid cold, such as NH (or Spokane WA where I used to live), it can get cold enough the cold travels down the pipe and can freeze the pipe that does have water... a problem we never had again once we insulated the pipe from ground to handle.
@rupe533 жыл бұрын
@@ubetchya78 ... yes, you can get some cold transmitted down the pipe, but I suspect this is more a case of the depth being marginal. (not enough) There are charts available telling us the earth temp at certain depths in various areas. I'm not an expert but I would guess you'd want to be down enough to maintain something above 45 degrees to gain a little margin for error. In my area (Ct) 4 ft below grade is near 48 degrees. If you are close to a foundation it's a bit higher. I have a water line at 28 inches below grade going into a shallow crawl area and it hasn't frozen in 30 years. OTOH, 2 ft away from the foundation it takes a dive to near 4 ft deep. Obviously the house leaks enough heat and the bushes hold a little in there as well.

There is a formula for that. 1 foot of vertical elevation change creates 0.433 PSI of water pressure. So, for example, 40 feet of head(vertical elevation ) is going to be about 17 PSI. (40 ft head x 0.433 psi/ft = 17.3 PSI.)

Congratulations on your water system success. I admit that I was pretty skeptical at first, but in my defense, it was pretty hard to tell the elevation difference from the videos. I have since found a topo map of your area and can confirm that there is approximately 20 foot of head difference where your line terminates. This will increase as you extend the water line further towards the north and east. (Correction: More north than east) Hint: When applying Teflon tape to right hand threads, always wrap in the clockwise direction when facing the open end.

Would it have made more sense to crown the dirt on top of the trench to compensate for the settling that is sure to occur over time?
@derekread82203 жыл бұрын
That was my thought. As the ground has been dug up it will settle and will in all probability leave a continuous depression which could result in water from the channel just near the water reservoir diverting down it causing erosion, even though the ground has been re-seeded.

The tractor weighs about 5000lbs. I would think it is a decent compactor by running it up and down the trench many times. It will still settle a little more though. Filling the bucket would add another 2000lbs to help and I don't know if he has filled tires which would add at least 1000lbs more.

A useful tip when winding on PTFE tape - go with the thread, otherwise it's inclined to be cleared out rather than making the joint.

5 minutes or 45 seconds. Either one will fill a stock watering trough/tank. Well done! Perhaps you will want to add a small 12 volt pump to run off of solar at a later date, but for now, you have the source of life available.
