These guys didn't seem to know when they were extremely over matched. Once the aircraft carriers appeared on the scene, it was game over for the submariners.

True. Blowing merchant ships and Naval freighters out of the water was easy. But the Germans never stood a chance once Britain and the U.S. put all their resources to bear on the U-Boats. The Atlantic is simply too small even when you consider their operating limitations. Taking out the subs became a turkey shoot after 1942.

Once the enigma code machine had been captured and German messages decoded, the U-Boat days were numbered. In mid-1943 the life aboard a U-Boat became extremely dangerous and the wolf-packs began to be sent to the bottom by aircraft bombs or destroyer's depth charges.
