In todays video, we didnt see this coming for our calf rearing season for Calves 2023. We dosed with a long acting dose that unfortunately didn't actually last that long! We have worked with our great vet the whole way along, dung sampling along the way but we got hit by a big case of lungworms throughout the calves, causing pneuomia. So it's time to get all 230 calves in and dosed asap. Big thanks to Herdwatch sponsoring our cattle videos, their app really is invaluable on the farm.
Herdwatch is a simple solution to reducing farm paperwork and making better decisions & is now used on over 14,000 farms in Ireland & the UK.

Can I ask Phil was he not concerned that the average weight was approx 100kgs? Taking the date of birth as being April 1st and Sept 1st being the video post date. 35kg birth weight so they gained 65kg in 150 days. That circa 0.4kg/day? That certainly would lead to an immune compromised status. Allowing young calves to graze after older stock is absolutely crazy tactics. Lungworm on a post mortem is always always relevant, particular in very young stock. You can do a specific test on faecal samples, it's called Baerman. Dosing and moving them to new pastures is also terrible advice given. The reason for this is that the resistance worms (lets say 100 worms out of 1000 as an example) that the dose doesn't kill will be the only worms passed onto the ground in that new grass field. Therefore, they will become the dominant worms as they have no competition in this newgrass and you will have a bigger problem down the line.

The reason autumn born calves do so much better is because the cows that have them are on grass for the 7 months or so leading up to their born. Spring born calves the cows that have them are on silage in sheds for the 5 months before they are born

Hi phil, had occasions when I’ve seen lung worms in dairy cows here. Usually more of a risk when a wet spell of weather follows a dry spell particularly early summer as we’ve had this year. Easy to diagnose in dairy cows as they travel to and from the parlour and they’re exercised. You that lung cough. Treated early it’s no bother but can be devastating if not and permanent lung damage done. Best of luck and hopefully they all pick back up again.

As Liv said there are so many variables and things don't always work as they should. That said though when a manufacturer goes straight to how can we blame the customer it speaks volumes as to what you can expect from them going forward. Hope you get a good response from the dose and they recover before coming inside.

Did you notice much coughing? It's hard keeping on top of everything, got caught out bad with a pneumonia virus one year thinking it was worms even though they were regularly dosed, only for sending samples away would never have known there were a few casualties and expensive vet bills but vaccinating for pneumonia ever since. Another great video Phil keep it up 👍

Hi Phil and Liv. I have used c.t.c powder sprinkled lighty on their feed for 4 days after such a stressful time for calves. Worked very well to compact intense coughly when the lovely calves are shedding the worm burden. You are lucky to have a great vet who really cares about animals. It must be very hard for farmers out there trying to handle events like these on their own. Thank you both for your honesty. I'm sure it will help many out there. All the best.

Hi Phil, good educational video. As far as your redshank is concerned, see the following from out fav encylopedia Ecology In the British Isles, this plant is a weed, without natural habitat, and always associated with human activity.[21] It likes moist soils, particularly rich ones, and acid peaty loams.[22] It does not like lime, and liming is cited as a means to fight it.[23][24]. I know its a bit off topic but alongside cattle I also farm sheep.... I regularly dose them and their lambs through summer and 1 batch in particular were doing awful.. stunted growth in both ewes and lambs and and the lambs were just so scoured ... I couldn't understand it ... a neighbour was on the fone and out of nowhere he said what a job they were having with sheep.... and basically they were dosing with same as me and were told there was a huge worm burden this year and too change dose due too resistance in the worms and he said after dosing with 1 of the ivermectic type drenches there sheep turned a sixpence....so I followed suit and the same happened too me....much improved....but like you I lost some and had never had it before....always somthing

hi Phil exact same problem here dosed calves here in June within few weeks calves started to get scoured within two weeks had 10 calves dead .. vet recommend that dose was an injection suppose to be immune to all types of worms .. remainder of that bunch of calves only looking okay set them back alot .. had to bring home some and put them back on milk .. what a disaster

Had same issue here few years back when using same injection. Got great coverage for about 8 weeks then worm issue. Just to say don't use pour on with calves now either as it caused lung issues with mine last year (it does such a kill calves can't cough up the worms and damages the lung so more at risk of pneumonia 🙈 found that out 2 ) went back to the old school way this year cheap dose every twice (3/4weeks apart) and am giving a different (more powerful ) one here at the moment. Very hard keep on top of worms this year with all the wet weather.

That first bunch are a long way off target Phil, a good 80 kgs. They all need to be 180-200 kgs atm That’s going to have a serious impact on there kill out weights come slaughter. You need to put a lot more effort into grass management for the calves. Probably sounds harsh but I think the game is either won or lost on calf rearing on there first season at grass Your cattle could be going to the factory earlier and killing heavier with more effort put into grass in the first year A couple hundred € on reels and fence posts could return you thousands in 2 years time Just my opinion Hopefully they come right for you 🤞

Hello Farmer Phil, this was very interesting to me. We've got 25 Angus calves at the moment that will go to the market very soon. We've never vaccinated and never have had any trouble with disease. In fact, we've haven't had the vet out here for quite a few years. On the other hand, you seem to have had a lot of trouble with sick calves. Is that typical for your area? Is it a climate thing? You appear to be in the UK somewhere, while I'm in central Virginia USA, so I assume you get a lot more rain and cooler temperatures. Just curious as to your thoughts on this. John

Are you able to record the batch/lot number and part number of the medication that was administered to the calfs in the herd watch app? If you used a few different bottles of medication you could trend the data by batch/lot number. It could potentially help isolate any potential issues with calfs treated with a specific batch/lot if there was a manufacturing defect. It could also help your case should you want to take action with the vendor/manufacturer.
