Brings back memories of fishing crooked slough at the Savanna Army Depot off of the Mississippi in Northern Illinois. Our freezer at home was always full of croppies. There was no limit in those days back in the 50’s and early 60’s before I had to leave home for the service. We would fill a couple of 5-gallon buckets some days. Dad would stop off and give them away sometimes. Those people were sure happy!

Many years ago, my Dad and I were tipped off to a place where you'd have to cross over the Atchafalaya River, to a small cut in the opposite side bank that lead to a sand bar about 75 yards long. On the other side of the sand bar was a good section of the Basin that was rarely accessed. It was common for us to fish there and catch 50 - 75 Sac-a-Lait, nice ones, in a day and mostly never saw another boat. In order to cross the sand bar, my Dad welded up a carriage with two of those wide inflatable tires...he mounted a salvaged seat belt from a car to cinch the carriage to the bottom of the boat. It was best to be in an average sized aluminum boat and have at least 3 people with you to get the boat across. We would position the carriage underneath and get the balance just right; one on each side and one at the front and away we'd go...boogy-ing across that sand bar to re-launch on the other side. It was consistent and some of the best fishing we ever did...we went there at least 4 or 5 times.

The part of South Louisiana I miss. Used to fish 3 to 4 times a month there but since we moved have hardly fished over 2 dozen times in 30 years. That area looked almost like Lake Theriot where my dad and I fished a lot but with not as many lily pads. And we just had a little 20 hp Johnson. And the boat landing almost reminded of the one on Bayou Black.
