This video tells the story of the discovery of SNR G107.5-5.2, the Nereides Supernova Remnant in Cassiopeia. Currently, the largest known supernova remnant to ever be discovered by amateur astronomers.
This nebula was discovered and photographed as an international effort alongside my friends Marcel Drechsler, Yann Sainty, Nicolas Martino, and Richard Galli. We found and photographed this entirely with telescopes available to consumers.
We hope you enjoy the video and the discovery, full resolution images can be found here: www.astrobin.com/towmdb/

The Supernova Remnant is beautiful! We amateur astrophotographers know how much work one has to put into it to make such discoveries. Congratulations Bray and all the people involved.

Awesome - great video. After finding yours (and others) discovery with M31 and its lovely blue companion I decide as a recent beginner to jump in the deep end. 1st up is attempting to replicate any of that around M31 on a smart telescope from vaonis (I'm mad and up for a challenge!) went with an Altair 4nm Sii and Oiii filter - just need many hours of imaging to see if I get anything or not. 2nd - I have a telescope live account so am randomly looking for Oiii stuff from some fav targets of mine (rolled a dice!) Keep up the great work.

is it just me, or can other people see, from 09:59 to roughly 10:14, a new candidate for "Thor's helmet"?? I also saw, in the red dust immediately to the right of the helmet, what appeared to me as a human head, face and neck, which could also be interpreted as a face with a mask, particularly those Masquerade masks you see at parties?? Maybe it could be called "The masquerade nebula"?? 🤔 Awesome work once again Bray! You're getting really good at finding these as yet unknown objects/structures in space!

Incredible discovery. Curious if I would be able to capture it too with my modest equipment from a very cloudy Netherlands. One tip as one KZbinr to the other; You might want to make those Zoom call recordings stereo. Watching this video with headphones on is a bit annoying.

With fast optics and dark skies, it is certainly possible to get something, but this is faint faint. And I’ll keep this in mind for the next one!

Can you add a full list of equipment used, filters, camera/s scope etc? Such a wide object! Wonder if rasa or hyperstar would be up to the task for faster imaging or if it creates a hinderancr. Great work, im working on my own discover now. You Rock Bray!

An amazing discovery there. Can you superimpose this amazing nebula against the Cassiopeia constellation so I can get an idea of exactly where it is? I was also wondering if you have any idea what magnitude this incredible object is? Keep the great work coming 😊.

Check our astrobin image! It has coords and the widefield reference. Not sure of the magnitude, but it is faint!

We need more of such mind blowing beauty to put our own little existence into a greater perspective. People who realize and acknowledge this perspective may then start thinking on how insignificant humanity and its problems are in this large open void. Better get our act together and engage into creative constructive activities than all the unspeakable destruction and chaos we are causing to ourselves and our microscopic yet unique place here on earth.
