Those tiny holes or pores are caused by air bubbles in the joint compound. They can be caused by not thinning the joint compound with water or mixing it at a speed that's too high. Some people will add a few drops of dish soap to the mud before mixing, as it is a surfactant and will reduce bubbles forming.
@MasonDixonAcres7 күн бұрын
Actually asked the drywall guy about dish soap and he is a non-believer haha but the guys who hung the drywall also finish and they swear by dish soap!
@KurtMGibbs3 күн бұрын
@@MasonDixonAcres Yeah, the dish soap is not universally agreed upon. I'm not a drywall expert but with proper mixing and thinning, I've managed to avoid the pores. Vancouver carpenter and drywall shorty give great drywall advice.

You can also use a 4 inch or 6 inch mini roller (the ones with the thin roller insert) to cut corners. It will get all the tight corners that the bigger corner roller didn't get.

There are some good comments here I will add one more. After you finish up the last of the sanding, vacuum or just dust off the surfaces then lightly wipe it down with damp sponge or damp terry towel, This will knock down the nap of the paper raised by sanding, softens any scratches/sharp edges and fill small pin holes. I have heard this called sponge sanding. Then prime, follow up with a low angle light inspection fix any really bad spots then top coat paint No sanding after priming is necessary. For level 5 smooth walls I usually end up with 4 coats of mud. The trick is not to over work the mud or over sand the joints.

Nice job. Fond memories the last time I painted my entire house. Decided not to use an extension pole on my 8' walls. So hours bending down to floor and reaching up to ceiling. Ended up with Inguinal Hernia! I used barely damp sponge to wash dust off walls. Constantly rinsing sponge. Also used vacuum. Good Luck! My technique to clean the roller is using a hose with a nozzle. Plant the extension pole in the ground, hit the roller just right with a stream of water and it spins very very fast cleaning as it goes.

I like to get my primer tinted to what color I am painting the wall. It may not perfectly match the actual color because it is not the same as the base color, but it will get you way closer to that finished color you want.

Pva (drywall primer) is half the cost of kilz 2.. A sprayer is like $400 and so much quicker and easier on your body. I build one house every year. I spray a 1600sqft house in 3 hours, walls and ceilings. I spray the primer and role the actual paint color. I don’t back role the primer. Never seen a reason to

I agree with you on most of what you said. I’d go with a more expensive/ bigger airless. It’ll keep up with you “less wait time to catch up” and from 30+ years of experience less downtime with repairs.
@MasonDixonAcres8 күн бұрын
I'll probably try a sprayer on the next big project just for the heck of it! I read mixed reviews on pva primer, it's pretty thin to accomodate spraying so went with the thicker kilz 2 because of that. Whether that makes any difference in the long run, I have no data on 😄

I'm DIYing my reno with an X5 and a 516FFLP. the FFLP is extremely forgiving and even reduces overspray. And once you're taped for spraying, you can easily hit it with another coat in almost no time. I'd love a more substantial pump but it'd be hard to complain about this things performance.

All paint spatters, whether brushed or rolled. That's why I do ceilings first, then walls. Any minute spatters on the walls from painting the ceiling are rolled over. This is even more important for finish/top coats. Before top coating walls, always final top coat ceilings. Roller cleaning/storage: Why clean roller covers if you're going to use the same primer or paint from day to day? A lot of work and time to do so to end up with a compromised nap. With latex paints and primers, I wrap the roller carefully and tightly in Saran wrap and fold the ends over. Can even be left on the roller bracket. This will keep paint from drying on the roller for literally several weeks if need be. Note this works best with high quality and shorter nap roller covers which tend to not shed for longer periods. For interior new walls and all walls in good shape, I would never use a 9/16 nap. At most a 7/16 or a 3/8. They spatter less, provide a smoother finish, and use less paint. Longer nap rollers result in that "apartment complex" look where walls are painted dozens of times. The same for brushes, wrap tightly in Saran wrap to keep air out.
@MasonDixonAcres2 күн бұрын
Thanks for all the tips! The microfiber rollers left a nice smooth finish even at 1/2 and 9/16 nap. Def agree on wrapping the rollers, just don't reuse a bucket liner overnight even if it's wrapped up.. learned this the hard way on the next painting video lol

A couple of comments. 1. I'm in the beginning stage of designing my own home on some land I just bought, so thank you for all your content. 2. I'm in the middle of a full master bath remodel and I did a lot of drywall work. I too ran into your problem. A couple of ways to avoid that is... - A) spray the paint as to roll it. Your layers will be thinner and allow the wall to breathe so that bubbles don't form over your mud work. - B) if you're going to roll it, 1st buy the cheapest white paint you can get and dilute it with water. A 50/50 ratio for the 1st coat or 2 will ensure your latex is absorbed into the mud and it will prevent the bubbles (I learned that on KZbin). It may seem useless, but it will save you from the patchwork you're now doing. Once you have your base coats, then prime it if you wish. Just note that primer is thick, and that thickness is adding to your problem. Kilnz is best used for stains and things like that you wish to hide in the paint, not so much naked drywall. (The Home Depot paint dept. guy taught me that) Lastly - I love a painted wall with an even coat. Like you discovered, the even coat/color helps to bring out the surface flaws that the flat colored dry-mud tends to hide. Great job on your positive attitude, as I image you probably swear like a trucker when the camera isn't on!!🙂 .. I sure do!!!
@MasonDixonAcres8 күн бұрын
Thanks for all the tips! The bubbles were in the cured drywall mud before I started priming but I didn't notice them until after primer. There were a couple areas left without primer at the base of walls that still had bubbles, which was how I could tell it wasn't from the primer. Sounds like the thin primer you use is similar to PVA drywall primer, may give that a shot out of a sprayer on the next big project. Best of luck on your remodel and new build!

Take a 20" box fan and four 20x20x2 MERV 6 filters and make a filter cube. Tape the four filters into a square, then use a 20x20 piece of cardboard on bottom...use duct tape to seal the edges. Place the box fan on top of the filters, suction side down. Duct tape to seal and then plug it in and place in the middle of the room. When you sand and make dust, the filter box will do a decent job of collecting a lot of the dust...

Top tip for future, when you have primed and are doing a second fill, add a little coloured chalk to the mud, then when it's ready for sanding it's easy to find and easy to see for touch up too, When you roll a ceiling, you start above the window ir light source, so you can see the wet edges easily and get less misses each coat, Also, don't cover your rollers in paint overnight, use a bin liner or carrier bag, put a bag over the roller bucket, don't put paint in a bag and expect to be able to roll off the excess properly. Last one... Use a 2foot pole for corridors, it will extend to four foot, using the quick release type pole allows you to use it extended and shorten it quickly( to avoid hitting the wall behind) ,also allowing you to continue at the same pace, this used to be my trade, ,

Thanks for all the tips! Yep, after a few dings in the wall I learned after the prime coat to get a 2-4' pole 😂

Aron Jones (aron_jones_carpenter) mentioned that when he needs to trim drywall openings without damaging tape or membranes, he just cuts a strip of 1/4 ply or other thin material to line the inside of the jamb.
@MasonDixonAcres2 сағат бұрын
That would work if you have a bunch of space to make the reveal around the window consistent. With our tilt turns it’s pretty tight, and built up trim also cuts a few degrees off how far they can swing inwards

All things considered, the few issues we had were so minor compared to what it could have looked like lol it's very hard to know what you're going to get unless you've used the same crew on previous, very recent jobs. Even good referrals for different trades (i.e. concrete) gave us a massively different end result due to changes in crew, stopping to care about their business, etc.

For that ceiling seam, you need to sand with at least a 24" block, if not a 36". You can def see that waviness and that would piss me off too.

Yeah. All that final stuff is why I hate painting. You can be as careful as you like, but prep will never be perfect, and where to draw the line is - for the person who will live with the result for years - some kind of struggle. Good on you for pushing to get it right. Otoh it's amazing how many sins are hidden by modern paints. We lived in Army quarters for decades, which were painted between occupants - about every 3 years. They never worried about patching picture-hanging nail holes and similar flaws. Yet you had look extremely hard to see any.

With enough coats of paint, you can hide anything 😆 my college apartment was similar, and one time I went to an all-inclusive resort that also appeared to have 30+ coats of paint on everything 😂

You're not supposed to walk a light up to the drywall; you'll always see defects doing that. Our industry standards don't allow that; typically, you have to use natural light and stand no closer than 6 feet. That's why we always have issues with ceiling-mounted lights: They would expose any seams. There is nothing you can really do about that. It's good you covered it more, I am sure that helped
@MasonDixonAcres8 күн бұрын
haha my buddy in commerical construction has said before that's their standard as well, and owners reps don't want to hear it 😆 I was only using it to find the additional areas of porosity that I missed before priming

Nice work. You two are making yourselves a very nice well insulated home to enjoy for decades. Don’t forget to have some lightning rods added to your roof and well shed if your pump is in one. Real cheap insurance. Stucco or hardie board is great for a fire resistant exterior. Don’t be making the same mistake that thousands of folks did out west ..and lost everything. Your place is too close to woods to be making that mistake. It will lower your home owners insurance too.
