This is an old video but I wanted to say that this song hurts so much. At first she's pissed and you can see the anger because she said she's leaving and he doesn't seem to care. But then anger turns to anguish at the first "We should have belonged together" as she reads him out because she's not just calling him out, she's also talking to herself and telling herself that the greatest love of her life is over and it shouldn't have been over but everything about it was wrong so it has to be over. And it's so fucking sad because after she says she's got something now and after she comes to terms with it, she stops and stares at him, shaking in place and clearly on the verge of tears before she finally insists that she has to go. And I just really love this version of this song because it's about a woman coming to terms with the love of her life not being the love of her life and accepting that they could never be any of what they should have been.

Sophie-Louise Dann is simply astounding, she is transcendent, the orchestration and Julian are the cherry on the top, this is the production that should be in Broadway instead of the one with Jake Gyllenhaal

Dot loves George. Even in anger. Which is why this song/scene is so very important in the musical because she is going to give it one more shot which is why she waited so long for him even though he completely forgotten abt her. There has to be a moment of "pleading" with George to see what she sees. That moment of Dot's vulnerability, maturity even. And her journey is such that they will not see eye to eye no matter what and Dot will be filled with frustration and anger and regret. THAT IS THE JOURNEY SHE GO THROUGH IN THIS SONG/SCENE. This woman is so flat in her performance that shes just spewing anger frm the moment she started this conversation. She does not understand the roller coaster ride of emotion Dot/George is going through. What a shame

i think the arrangement is a step too slow. I dunno if it was slowed down for the actors to have the opportunity to sing bigger notes. But... it felt weird -- the tension of the fast pace of the original was lost.

Julian Ovenden has a magnificent instrument-but he's not a baritone. George is not in his range; what is this octava nonsense?

…George is written as a tenor. Ovenden is singing what’s written in the score.

@@jordanfantauzzo1723 George is a tenor, but Ovended sings “Why do you insist you must hear the words when you know I cannot give you words” an octave higher than what is written. Considering he’s a grown man, though, I’m sure he could sing it just fine as written. It’s a choice. So it’s not a problem with his voice it’s just a strange choice to option up.

I dunno-- maybe I'd have to see this performance live and in context, and it doesn't come across in a short video, but I think her performance is awful. Also, I think there's nothing more hammy than an Englishwoman playing a woman scorned.

Kevin Russell her performance is awful? Clearly you don't understand a single thing of acting. Or singing for that matter. Her characterisation of Dot is so original and spot on. During this song, she's falling apart on stage, but still she manages to keep the singing to a high level, her belting is great and her soprano register is superb. It's the best portrayal of Dot I have ever seen.

I watched it again, and I came away with the feeling that it was very much a stage performance, as it should be of course, but that it doesn't translate well over video. I remember seeing something similar-- a stage performance on television by Jennifer Holliday at the Tony Awards years ago, where she was performing for the audience, and not the camera. On camera she looked like she was overacting, but her performance must've been great seeing it live in the theatre. When she was finished, the audience went wild.

I thought it was hard to go wrong with Sunday In The Park but I stand corrected. I hated these performances. The set looks amazing and clearly so much love put into the production but things like the overdone accent when moving from speech to singing and the cheat turn to the audience so they could get a look at ALL the emotion on her face just reeked of ego or poor direction - I can’t be sure which. I thought I just might be an old dinosaur who couldn’t get The blueprint set down by Mandy P and Bernadette out of my head but I have seen other productions which I loved. These actors and director need to reacquaint themselves with the old theatrical adage “less is more”. Sorry not sorry.

I completely agree. For me when Dot sings this, its more of a heartbroken plea. She has come there hoping he will ask for her back but instead he’s of course let her down one more time. She’s begging for the words because she is begging him to give just a little, because if he would give that small amount of effort, she could stay. Yet In this moment, she sees he can’t, and her heart breaks. This leads her, of course, to having to leave/move on. Nobody is George, but George can’t give her what she needs and this scene forces her to face that head on. THIS ACTOR portrays it as a weird argument where she is confident and not heartbroken, but rather somewhat cocky and sassy in her leaving. It’s kind of odd for this character. She’s very unlikable. I don’t think the actress understood how vulnerable Dot was supposed to feel in this moment.

I don't like HER at all. She's straining and overdoing it.

I hear absolutely no straining in her voice whatsoever. As for overdoing it, this was a stage performance. She was acting for the audience, not for the camera. She's having a break down and doing it very well, while still maintaining her incredible vocal power.
