We Don't Need Any More Superhero Origin Stories

Superhero origin stories seem to be making a big push again through Hollywood. Some are welcomed with open arms by fans, and others like X-Men Origins: Wolverine were so bad, it begs the question why they even made it in the first place. With the fast rise of the X-Men's popularity, and especially Wolverine, it's no wonder the studio jumped at the opportunity. But hindsight is 20/20, and a sloppy Wolverine origin story set the X-Men franchise back quite a bit.

I agree and disagree. We don’t always need the same origin story told over and over again. But for particular characters, sometimes the origin story is completely necessary for audiences to know how these heroes, or even villains, got started. Honestly, Wolverine is a character who’s origin can be done greatly. Unfortunately, X-Men Origins was a piss poor attempt at this.

Cyclops is a pretty good example of a character audiences may need an origin for. The Hulk and Wolverine are defined by wearing their emotions on their sleeves. Their powers could easily be seen as super tantrums and it's not hard to tell how they feel about any given situation. With characters who handle their issues in more emotionally mature ways or are more reserved like Cyclops and Mr.Fantastic it would be helpful for audiences to know where they're coming from and how they got to be the way they are. I feel that when an origin becomes the only defining factor of the character that it gets to be too much. Batman is more than the alley. Superman is more than Krypton. Spider-Man is more than a bug bite. But Black Knight is so much cooler if you know about his brother and the history of Marvel's Arthurian stuff. Aquaman's pre-origin alone could make for a great Game of Thrones-like series.

Wish they would make some of those and stop making the same Spiderman/Superman/... origin stories. I loved how they introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy. We didnt really need to know their origins, we eventually found out more about them. Besides, their backgrounds were pretty simple huh.

When it comes to superhero movies, origin stories are either repetitive and cliché or interesting and new depending on how it’s interpreted. When it comes to other genres, some stories require an origin story to better understand the character/stories and others simply don’t require it to keep the mystique of the characters and world they inhabit.

So it’s either repetitive or it isn’t. It’s either interesting or it’s not. Of course it depends on the character for example Black Panther is a mantle passed down to the ruler of Wakanda. We didn’t need a detailed origin of T’Challa, next in line becoming Black Panther. Other characters like Wolverine and say Sentry can have their origins through flashbacks that also push a greater narrative much like a Highlander episode. Someone like the Blue Marvel may require a detailed origin from the very beginning.

I completely agree and in general I do not like prequels. Why? Because originally, the author chose to begin the story where it begins. The story is the interesting thing that happened. You know what isn't a story? A biography. A biography is... a biography. Prequels never, ever surpass originals because the original told the part of the story that is actually interesting. The Godfather Pt 2 is, in part, an origin story, and it's amazing. also, as someone who was around when the SW Holiday Special came out... no... no one was hyped about Boba Fett. the fandom goes back to Empire, not Holiday, he was wrong about that.

Civil War soft-launching Spider-Man and Black Panther is really the best way to soft-launch new characters without complete origin stories. For Spiderman it really feels like the only way to have done it since we've seen his origin done utterly to death. Black Panther played a significant role in the story with basically zero introduction and left enough intrigue to drum up his solo film. It's easy to forget that in the prototypical format there's really only three superhero stories - (1) origin story, (2) heroes learn to work together, (3) villain is a dark reflection of hero.

MCU Spider-Man is literally the worst example you could have used. Without the origin story shown, the writers ended up changing his character so much that they had to do it again in NWH, meaning all of his movies up to that point were origin stories.

@@martinchuma I think that's more mishandling on a large scale .. because they'd decided to keep him in the mix for infinity war/endgame, there were enough story beats they had to hit to get him there in time (and with Stark dying off, playing up the dynamic there in Homecoming was probably a misstep in a long-term sense). Phase 4 spiderman would be in a much healthier position if they'd played Homecoming and FFH differently. I guess my point was, the end of CW left both those characters in really good jumping-off spots where 'no origin story' could work.

I DESPISED how they introduced Peter in the MCU. He was such a little try hard and was given countless toys from Stark. Even in ‘Far From Home’ Peter feels “so alone and helpless” without Tony and all Happy has to do is drop a jet so he can make another magic outfit. Meanwhile TASM gave Peter a “HOMEMADE” web shooter and costume, and nobody cared. They were too busy wanting Raimi’s version back and snorting Avenger fumes.

yeah let me backpedal again - I guess what I meant to be my biggest point was that bringing spiderman into MCU with the third uncle Ben death in 14 years would not have worked. like, at all. PS4 Spider-Man might be a better example of what I mean. As a non-comic book fan I can say I'm pretty sick of the 'origin story' (video makes good points in that area) and dropping a half-way 'arced-out' iteration of the character in the middle of things is better IMO than rehashing the deadest of dead-horse origin stories for the umpteenth time. Whatever mishandling of the character took place from that initial starting premise is a separate discussion and you're probably right about that half of it

Exactly, it's not that we dont need origin stories, but what we really need are creative, new ideas that depict said stories in engaging ways for the audience. I think this applies very much to characters for both DC and Marvel and without them feeling repetitive or formulaic as others have stated before. I do think the approach that Matt Reeves The Batman took to tell his story worked so well because we are already incredibly well introduced to this character after years of different depictions, so having Batman set in his second year of crime-fighting allows us to examine his character in a plot cohesively without seeing his parents gunned down. Even though this approach may not work for every character in comic books, I do think taking inspiration from this idea of adapting origin stories tied to a cohesive story driving our character that makes sense for the narrative brings a lot of room to breathe new ideas and interesting narratives. I'm not a writer or a film expert but I do think superhero origin stories do in fact serve a purpose and shouldn't be disregarded, but rather redefined in new ways (if that makes any sense?).

I'm still american, and so I have a positive bias towards superheroes and comics, but even so I still can't fucking stand them in a way. Comic culture celebrates familiarity so much that being formulaic, repetitive, and restrained is almost encouraged. The fact that we even have to say "wait how about, we adapt it more creatively and out of the box?" just shows how fucked we are. People are so hung up on getting more of what they know they already like, than to explore fresh ideas as something they're not familiar with, it's insane.

I prefer the way Batman and Spider-Man origin stories are played out. They are similar in each incarnation, but aren't dwelt on, because they only offer us the reasoning for who the character is. I also like the format of retelling the same story, but from different creative minds, instead of Marvel's drawn out continuation format.

In the comics, a good way to do it would be to just go back when you need a retcon. So, take Detective Comics #38. It works fine, but retcon young Dick as a little less murdery for the Silver Age, then a little more murdery later. (Seriously, in the first incarnation of his origin, Dick actually kills three of Zucco's goons.) Tim Drake has to show up, as does the Court of Owls, so add them then. But after that, no need to tell the story over and over.

And one of the recent ones succeeded and the other failed. MCU Spider-Man has alot of problems, biggest is how far away from the scource material it is. They didn't have to do the origin again, but they completely ignored it entirely, which was only proven more so in No Way Home. On the other hand, the Batman GREATLY succeeded. It was a Rookie Batman movie, not an origin. But even then, the film makes sure to directly reference the origin and show its value. Heck there are 2 plot points in the film directly involving his parents. One about his relationship with Alfred, and the other about how his father and mother were directly involved with the Riddler's motivation. So no, we do not NEED origin movies anymore, but we do need the existence and value of the origin to be acknowledged. Especially when the origin itself is so vital to the character's story such as again, Batman and Spider-Man.

yeah and i like how they handled spideys origin in the new films- they skipped over his actual power-gaining, since everyone knows abt the radioactive spider and all that, but then they show him grow into the role of spiderman over the three films, slowly maturing and realizing the weight of the responsibility while letting go of his mentors (like iron man and mysterio). NWH was basically just the origin story for tom's spiderman, complete w the whole great power-great responsibility thing and ending with him swinging around in a red-blue suit, and i think it was executed rly well

X-Men Origins was poorly executed, but it’s an idea that could’ve worked with better hands/studio heads. A more intimate STANDALONE story of Logan eventually joining the weapon X program could’ve absolutely been a banger. But shoehorning Professor X, Cyclops, Deadpool (not Wade, he was perfect) is just typical studio bs that tarnished the movie. I think a story of Logan and his brother could’ve hit hard.

They didn't need to show it, but they do need to value it. The Batman succeeded in this however. It wasn't an origin movie, but it greatly held onto the origin of the character.

I remember the Marvel trading card series that had a page devoted to various Marvel mysteries. In the following years they dumped out each reveal for those mysteries like they were going down a checklist. I hated it. Removing mystery from your stories across the board is a mistake. What you don't know can be very important to character relatability. It's a very old rule that rings true. Always leave them wanting more.

Normally a fan, but this one was a bit of a mess right from the just. Like 1:40 in you say "Wolverine hopped from book to book until appearing in his own limited miniseries?" Why are you making him sound like this character no one knew what to do with? He was a member of the X-Men and appeared in every issue of that title for seven straight years until his own miniseries. The problem isn't origin stories. We could, if anything, use a few more of them. The current Marvel model of just dropping characters in with no explanation is awful. Leave some characters (like Wolverine, Boba Fett, etc.) mysteries, sure, but if the future is just dropping in random star-punching superkids as macguffins then expecting them to lead a Young Avengers project later on, count me out.

The biggest problem with superhero origin stories today is that now we need to follow 10 seasons or an entire freaking trilogy just to see the main character starting to act the way he's supposed to be like in the comics since the beginning. It's becoming such an annoying and tiring trope that has been growing more recently in the last few years, and it's also worrying because it can be used as a manipulative perfect excuse from the writers to pull up at the last minute in case they get criticized for never understanding a comic book character in the first place.

They are systematically stripping away anything unique or interesting from them each time they explain away “why” they turned out “bad”, which also strips them of any agency or consequences which is bananas! We don't need more Dragons - characters who aren't really characters but instead are essentially forces of nature that look cool - what we need is characters with well though tout backstories that are there from the start. As cool as Wolverine/Logan is as a character, his creation (as mentioned, being a random antagonist for the Hulk to tangle with) leaves much to be desired in the way of an actual character. Had he been invented with a history in mind in the first place, he probably would have turned out even more cool, frankly.

Back story is an important story telling tool used for character development and to help explain possible plot holes when old characters and stories are resurrected. A good origin story will help turn a stand alone film into a never ending cash cow 😅

Honestly Origin stories are important for certain characters. Sure we don't need to see it over and over for popular characters, but there are still a few that aren't exactly well known to the public. Remember Iron Man wasn't an A-list Hero until his first movie and then the MCU. Origins stories are needed to make an audience familiar with an unknown character. Once the character is established, he or she doesn't need an origin story, even if the series needs a reboot. As the joke goes, Uncle Ben doesn't need to die so many times, and neither does the Waynes. I'm glad Hulk learned this lesson.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. Everyone knows why Batman is Batman Everyone knows that Superman came from another Planet Everyone knows about the boy that got bit by a spider and Became Spiderman Everyone knows the history behind Wolverine's claws Everyone knows not the get the hulk angry because you won't like 'um when he's angry. I remember how the 1989 Batman movie went straight to showing batman taking care of all the crime in goth without getting into how he became batman and later just show that quick flash back of the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne. It just made me wish we could see other Superhero movies do that. I also remember how the first X-men movie just went straight to showing all the major members together and Wolverine just showed up and started getting used to working as a team. Nobody needed an origin story then. We just needed some cool characters who could all work together and save the day and go home happy.

I see MCU Spider-Man being used a lot as a positive example. Remember the ONLY REASON that worked was because Tony basically becomes Peter’s fairy godfather and plays “Gimmie Gimmie Takeaway” with him for 2 movies. Peter’s energy in Civil War is borderline Stewart from MadTV. “Mr. Stark! Mr. Stark lookame! Look what I can do! Mr. Stark! Be my daddy! Look what I can do!”

I'm good with origin stories in comics and media as long as it's written well and makes sense. Characters without back stories can be cool but shallow. I never cared about boba Fett as much as other fans because there wasn't much to care about.

True, I am starting to write screenplays for fun, most of them are dramas and thrillers and as a comicbook fan, I am now making a storyboard for a MCU Ghost Rider and first draft it was a Robbie Reyes origin then turns out it's so basic and I tried Johnny Blaze origin, but it was too many cliches then I changed the title into Ghost Riders, so it is not a origin story and it is about Robbie's, Johnny's, Carter Slade's redemption and current struggles of being the Ghost Riders.

It wasn’t even the stuff you would expect that killed this movie. Hugh Jackman was still as good as ever and the action was still awesome. It was the fact that they completely bumbled Deadpool in a way that can’t be described as anything but confusing. Just gotta thank God for “Deadpool” and “Logan” I guess…

I feel like this video is more about why X-Men Origins isn't a good movie than why we don't need origin stories. There are also plenty of examples of superhero origin movies that are brilliant--Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman Begins, Richard Donner's Superman, Black Panther... plenty of excellent examples, and for this video to really work, it should have given examples as to why the writer thinks them unnecessary.

all I hope for is that, that is the mcu's wolverine and not a variant from a different universe or anything like that. It would make sense if they brought the x-men into mcu with them being from a different universe just like how tobey's spiderman had no clue of who the avengers are. It could be that the main 616 universe doesn't have the x-men but does have mutants as in ms marvel who's not a mutant in a different universe. I am very excited for the rollout of wolverine, fantastic 4 & deadpool.

Wolverine’s Origin absolutely worked in the comics. This idea that something has to be a mystery to be appreciated is silly. Especially in the ongoing series format where fans appreciate additions to the lore if they make sense. I can understand this perspective in movies, but less is more is not how comic books work. Star Wars Legends had dedicated fans who appreciated all the details writers put in for their favorite characters. You really can’t put traditional writing and cinema ideas in forums that are happy to disregard them and have their own genre with their own rules. Anime and Manga prove this emphatically. That is why it takes special people, usually in tune with the source material to translate these ideas into movies and tv. The problem is studios typically just turn a blind eye to the people who are most in tune with the material, like Disney did with Lucas.

I do think we can hit the ground running more. I mean sure the first Blade gave us in some insight into his past, but even he’s the Blade we know and love right at the beginning. Hell Blade 2’s first few minutes allow the viewer to catch up whether he/she saw the first one or not.

They both do videos, actually. Some of the Nerdstalgic videos are voiced over by the original guy, who's still very much involved with the channel, and others are voiced over by the guy you're hearing on this video. If I recall correctly, this set-up was arranged so that the main guy would have more time to work on his movie that he Kickstarted.

Honestly, there was no need for that origin comics series, anyone who read all the x-men, wolverine and weapon x comics through the 80's and 90's had a pretty solid idea of his origins, mostly anyway. There were gaps, but not many, really the only things we were missing was his childhood and an idea of when he was actually born, neither of which were particularly important. That series and the movie should never have been made.

kinda makes me think of the characters from Cowboy Bebop, each of them has mysterious backgrounds, and the more you found out, the more fleshed out they became, but also the more worrying the mystique would be ruined, which is why its so good the series ended before that happened, whereas the X-Men films didn't learn that lesson

The real lesson the X-Men films failed to learn was that if you just keep telling slight variations of the same Charles/Eric frenemy-bromance without advancing the plot or that relationship even a little bit, people will eventually tune out.
