I think the whole covid thing made people complacent and accepting of "just good enough". "My fast food order was ALMOST right - they forgot the fries and the hamburger was cold, but I'm not going to go back and complain about it" When they see someone trying to be innovative and perfect something, they lose their minds.

This is not accidental. Excellence, innovation and advancements requires standards and limits. Both are a poison to the modern moral relativists who celebrate equality.

Okay Jake I have to agree with you I want by making my black powder I want it to be the absolute best I can absolutely do I was I'm a 74 years old but I was really good at chemistry when I was in school and I don't know how these things work and making something very pure and consistent but some people if it just has to go boom or bang and it works I don't care about how much credit got to clean out of their their barrel and how many times they can reload before they can't reload

I don't know man. Maybe C19 got more people to notice the phenomena but it's been a strong way of life for many forever. Been a mechanic for nearing 30 years. From my observations most folks practice the "just good enough" when they are the ones doing something. However, give them the chance to scrutinize someone else and holy cow the tune they sing changes most unpleasantly. The less they know about something the more unpleasantly they run their pie holes to boot.

It's a VERY complex process with a lot of industry secrets. Some friends of mine and I looked into it a couple months ago and even for a bunch of chemists it's difficult to get a consistent and stable product.
@Slowly_Going_Mad
@Slowly_Going_Mad 18 күн бұрын
Definitely. You need access to or make stabilizers, need to used the correct amount. The NC it self has to nitrated to the correct level then there's the question of what is needed to plasticize it correctly and the use case for fillers that serve two functions to control burn rate and to make it dark to ensure surface burn only and not burning randomly throughout the whole grain. Then lastly grain structure itself. That's just to name a few hurdles. The concept is simple sure but to make something super consistent requires working with a crap ton of variables and becomes a headache quickly. That's not to say it can't be done, it's just a bit more involved than BP and we already see as here it's kinda a dark art that is already quite involved.

Screw people who don't like how you do it. What you are doing is exactly why, a lot of times, the things made by smaller manufacturers,, is often better than a mass produced product. Trial and error and testing and failing is what makes things better. The failing is the part that seems to be hard for some people. BUT for others, it is just part and parcel of a process that becomes part of the enjoyment not because you fail, but because you learned something.

And I am of the opinion that was sage advice. As I’ve aged I have added… Doesn’t matter what you do as long as you enjoy it. If you’re not enjoying it time to do something else. I get the impression this may be “Everything Blackpowder” philosophy. And if I’m wrong. It should be! 😎

Not able to because of rules etc. Where I live I also don't have access to Swiss powder. I've tried 777 and pyrodex but none of them have been as reliably available as GOEX. "Some schmuck in a garage can't do better than that".... they absolutely can (not implying you're a schmuck either). What the 'schmuck in a garage' can absolutely do it adopt a process that would cost Swiss or Goex five, ten, maybe twenty times or more the production cost per ounce of powder and get a better product for it. Businesses are still businesses, they still have to make money... and I'd be willing to bet they could absolutely make a powder that gets 150fps more than what they sell now, but they'd have to sell it at a price nobody would ever pay.

I've been in pyro for 20 years now and black powder is our bread and butter. I can honestly say this channel drops more knowledge about black powder in a few videos than the years spent bickering on forums about what's what. Now I know I'm on the right track because I agree with everything said on this channel about black powder :) One 'tightening up' of your excellent process I'd like to see is quantifying the amount of water used to dampen when making the pucks. It's a small detail, but it's a detail I think is worth bothering to control. Commercial manufacturers use about 3-4% by weight but they are pressing big cakes.
@equipyourselflifeskills5802
@equipyourselflifeskills5802 18 күн бұрын
Your environment will dictate the amount you would be required to gain compression consistency. That is a percentage that you will have to work out for the humidity of your powdered components as well as your ball mill that will influence your results. Outside your work area may have low humidity but your inside environment and or outside may be low/high. How you stored your powders and how your manufacturer and shipper packaged your products. Too many factors that can create a total deference in the results to provide exacting measurements. Just saying.

Oh, I failed to let you know I have been a pyro for ever as well. For you to get what you want the way you want it, go see Ned Goraki he has a vid on pucking. You should know who I am taking about if your a pyro 🧨
@pursaveer9027
@pursaveer9027 18 күн бұрын
@@equipyourselflifeskills5802 Yes, I know Ned Gorski. I know him enough to know he sees no need to make pucks because he uses screen-granulated BP for everything, unless he's coating his mill dust onto rice hulls. I did not know that Ned ventured into making pucks now too. I'll check his channel for the pucking video. My setup for test pucks is a die set made for me by Woody. It has a stop on it so it bottoms out when a puck is exactly 1/4" or 1/2" thick. It's very easy for me to control the dampening and the density, and to track moisture loss as the puck dries. I have no problem with "compression consistency". When I compare black powders, I make sure the density is the same for all powders tested. Differences in density result in differences in burn rate. BP pressed to 1.6g/cc burns considerably faster than BP pressed to 1.8g/cc. BP mill dust pressed with 3% added moisture to 1.7g/cc will not easily pick up or lose moisture in varying ambient humidities after it is broken up, dried, and graded. BP always has some moisture in it. Pressed BP never loses all the moisture that was added to compact it, but the loose powders before pressing would more easily pick up moisture-especially the charcoal. All these things can be (and have been) measured easily, so there's no guesswork in knowing what's what.

Jake, the pursuit of excellence is not "snobbery" it's a man who cares. Your sharing of the factors that impact on performance makes compelling viewing. You be you, we will watch.

Truly enjoy your work and admire your dedication. If I was making this myself I'd probably take shortcuts or settle for the first clean and reasonably powerful version I stumbled upon. That said I enjoy watching you strive for excellence and seeing if you can get a rise out of anyone while wearing a Tennessee Tuxedo.

Teddy Roosevelt pointed out that critics do not matter. Only the man in the arena matters. Your efforts matter, and apparently a helluva lot of us think that, because we love followi g your experiments and learning from your experiences.

As John Arbuckle said, “You get what you pay for”. So if you’re going to pay for all these materials, just do it! Kind Thanks and keep on shootin on! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

I view your channel (with much enjoyment) as an ongoing science experiment striving for the best possible product which I may or may not some day emulate. I am playing with my chemistry set and having a lot of fun with this journey thanks to you and your channel and appreciate the hard research your doing. Just like the British admiralty in the 19th century. Forget the detractors. They're just not on the same journey

please, keep trying for perfection. for me a very consistent propellant giving Swiss velocities with little soreaf and slightly cleaner would be a great improvement.

Personally, I'd like a "lazy man's" series where you try to make Go-Ex equivalent as lazily and with as little special tools possible.

A goal that is different from trying to equal and exceed Swiss, but still a legitimate and not unreasonable alternative goal. Not sure if Jake will care to take it on but maybe someone else will. Of course add as cheaply as possible to “as lazily and with as little special tools as possible”.

I do find it interesting that some people don't even desire "to find out" if a change makes a good or bad performance modification. At this point, the mechanics or your making the powder only seems to lack one thing, a PID controller to make the charcoal. Maybe an additional motor controller to spin the tumbler the other way every few hours. Of those two, the PID might be more important, but certainly harder to tune.

Making the best black powder possible is much like handloading your ammunition to get the best groups possible at whatever distance you desire or building a racecar to perform better than ever before. Kudos to you for doing the hard work and research to put the information and results on a video for others to learn from. People don't realize how much effort is put into the development of new innovations and want the easy way out

It's not just the mediocre power. There's also a bunch of extra work drying it out and everything. Any extra milling time is all just machine work with no input of your own time and energy. You can be off working, shooting, playing with the kids or making more with the wife. You just come back the next day instead of that night. What you pay for extra electricity will be less than the cost of alcohol. It's more work and cost with no better end result. The only upside I could see would be safety. Maybe a slurry would be less likely to go off from a static shock but I don't know enough about the physics/chemistry to evaluate that. If that was true, being less likely to blow up your garage might be worth the hassle of tuning the wet milling process.. Otherwise, you're already getting bitchin' results so why bother?

goex is really rare in europe, in France we use suisse and PNF (poudre noire française = french black powder) who are a little less expensive than suisse (10 - 20 euros/kilo) but less clean too.

I for one am enjoying the iterations and tuning being done to see just how good you can make it and am curious to see if my suspicions on variations in the process having the effect I think they may play out, if those variations do get tested. Can't afford to do it myself so your and your brother's experiementations are working as a very nice proxy for that. 😬 Extra bonus is you two are tempered enough not to jump from "Hey, this does something I like." to "How big of a boom can I make with it?" at lightspeed, if ever, meaning you're less likely to have something go really wrong.
