i use an obsolete powder i got in trade IMR SR-4759... in my martini henry carbine. i use 25 grains a piece of paper to keep the powder separate from the walnut media to take up the "airspace" launching a 500 grain 45 cal paper patched slug.... i can hit a torso sized target at 300 yards.

Well, I'll be darned! At just before the 2 minute mark you say the Model 94's original name was Winchester Center Fire, and didn't change its name to the 30-30 until the 50s. So I checked my Grandpa's hand-me-down 1949 Model 94, and sure enough... W.C.F. Thanks!

White sugar can be used instead of black carbon to make a satisfactory powder. Sugar is carbon in a different form and can be made into black charcoal by dousing it with sulphuric acid in an airy place

It should be comforting to know that your rifle can fire both 45-70 and 50-70. Now all you have to do is build some form of sleeve that you can slip into the chamber that will allow you to fire the smaller shells without destroying the brass. Great video as always.

Thanks for the video. I found it very interesting and you seem to have clarified a few myths. I don't know, but I've heard some of the replicas may not have the same volume in the cylinder as an original Walker, they have a shelf. Could there also be calibration errors in the chronographs being used? There may be other variables as well. Just playing devils advocate. I"m not subscribed to your channel.
@Everythingblackpowder
@Everythingblackpowder 19 сағат бұрын
Original Walker do not have a stepped chamber like 1860 army’s. If that’s what you’re referring to. As for the volume it’s well documented that the max charge of an original Walker was 60gr with a round ball which is the max charge of a replica.

I think it was in Hatcher's Notebook that I read the way to clear a squib (on the range during a match) in your 1903 was to pull the bullet from a live round, dump about half the powder, carfully load the case with half charge while pointing the muzzle straight up and fire it, straight up. That would clear the squib and no problems were ever experienced.

I don't know if anyone said this before, but I would have liked to have seen a clear jell block shot with one of those. The bullets might have just caught the rifling, but I doubt it since the .45 bullet diameter is .057" smaller than the .500 cal. The .45-70 bullet is .458 and the .50-70 bullet is .515. I'm sure they were tumbling out of the barrel. Would have liked to see how much damage and how deep they might have gone. But I'm also wondering if they loaded those cartridges with the hollow base Mini Balls back in the 1800's. I've seen some of the older BP cartridges loaded with them. If that was the case the hollow base might have swelled up enough to get some spin out of the riffling. The hollow base also puts the weight at the front and the hollow base kind of acts like a badminton shuttlecock and are accurate out of a smooth bore. That was proven on the TAOFLEDERMAUS channel they used a smooth bore shotgun at about 8:29 and the slow motion shows it to be very accurate: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWLFfJprlM6Lb6M I hope you might decide to try a few out of that rifle, it might be interesting to see the results. I have an old Black Powder shooters bible that has still pictures of several types of bullets in flight. One shows a Mini that had a bigger charge than normal powder charge for that round that shows the hollow base flared out, so I'm wondering if that would happen with the .45 Mini Bullet in your trapdoor. I shoot several BP guns, my favorite is a Shiloh Sharps 1863 rifle I had ordered special so it would take 140 grains of BP behind a 500 grain bullet. But that is a paper cartridge and it is a lot of fun to shoot. I also learned that corn meal can be used as a filler for lighter loads and cleans some of the following when shot. Y'all stay safe and have many good shooting days!

That is indeed a fine-looking M1868. Many folks do not realize that the breechblocks on the '68 were dated the year of manufacture (or at least they tried to), with most dated 1869 -- but a few each in '68 and '70, prior to the adoption of the M1870. The front of the receiver is longer on the M1860 than on the M1870, the breechblock opening thingy (forget what they called it) is squarish on the '68, rounded on the '70, etc. Anyway, GREAT vid guys. Something I'd heard about before and always wondered about.

I'm sure the manufacturers are very "precise" in the production of large quantities, & little errors at this level would have less variation in performance than small lot errors. like we can do... You make damn fine powder, but I was wondering what the most forgiving charcoal might be for the rank amateur? F'rinstance I don't have a proper press - still needs a meat mallet to crack the pucks though. My powder is less dense anyhow, and pinus radiata gives a more energetic powder than cottonwood for me.
