As someone who used a Vega 64 for literally 5 years: RDNA1 was a bigger pile of sh!t driver wise when it launched. Could not even run half of my common for 2019 games for 3 months after release. A770 has confusing issues, but it runs most everything playable rather than just hanging or crashing unlike my 5700XT which is in a Driving Sim build now.

@@anasevi9456 It took AMD one bloody year to fix a bug that caused a BSOD when playing back video on non-native resolutions. Browsing YT and websites with pesky autoplay was fun during that time. I'll never forget that experience, but my 5700 came 100 bucks cheaper than the NVIDIA counterpart at the time, so there's that.

Honestly this graphics card will only make sense to .01% of the target intel had in mind, the people who enjoy frustration and pain. There’s absolutely no point in spending your money on something that doesn’t even look like it’s in beta stage; and sure you could make a point for av1 encoding, but in all seriousness it would be better to wait and get a feature complete gpu from either AMD or Nvidia. Yes, MBR to GPT was put in place by Windows devs because the old process to convert an MBR to a GPT required Advanced knowledge of how to correctly partition the drive after deleting the initial to partitions. This automates the process so that a user can't really screw it up. I've used it a few times in moving an old boot drive forward, and it has worked every time.

Linus and Luke if you want to play older games with more performance you could try dxvk 1.10.1 (newer version have render issues on windows). its a compatibility layer that implement d3d9 to 11 on vulkan. and with vkd3d d3d12 on vulkan even if that is not important on windows. for that you only has to copy the dll file to the game executable and it most of the time just works ( cs go has a protection against such method but can be turned off/bypassed )

I've been an a380one of these for a few months, the drivers are getting better on the monthly updates. The last set of drivers corrected the last of the oddball issues (text not rendering on some buttons in some games). OBS has a beta version that is supposed to support Arc features, I'd wait until that is bug checked and actually released (Probably Jan or Feb). XeSS plugin for Unreal Engine was also just released, it probably has other fixes and optimizations for Arc as well (probably waiting until about Feb 2023 as well for game updates with these). Minecraft Bedrock has raytracing for this in development/testing, again a wait for game updates. I wouldn't recommend this as an 'Upgrade' Card, Re-Bar requirement. If you're making a new system and want to have ok game play while saving up for a big graphics card this will fill in (for the most part, check game capability first). My questions have to do with the long run use of the card, can this be run in a secondary slot without interfering with the performance of a new main video card? Can we pair this with and AMD card for its Encoder? Will the Media server programs update for Arc Encoders (Use for video streaming computers)?
@jabbahut755
@jabbahut755 Жыл бұрын
Intel will fully axe their GPUs before these updates come 😂
@DailyCorvid
@DailyCorvid Жыл бұрын
Well you will need 2 x DCA PCIe slots, though I doubt you want to spend that much. And, just for the sake of the gimmick of 2 different GPUs at once! That said there is no reason why you couldn't have both installed and just run one at a time with the other deactivated. You will 100% run into problems trying to duplex your GPU on a regular Mobo though... Like you could easily have two satnavs in your car but realistically you can only use one at a time, you only have two eyes mate!!!!! Lol. You could have each GPU drive a separate display, but you wouldn't use both simultaneously for the same task. EDIT : You could actually do better if you want the encoder - to get an Intel CPU with a decent igpu on the die package and then a GPU for graphics. Intels (and infact AMD's to a lesser degree) encoders will outperform the nVidia ones by a fair whack whilst using less power and less GPU cycles. So if you do graphics or repro work, yeah get the igpu (Intel sadly are better for pure encode/decode at the moment; but AMD versatile and cheaper / better quality parts). Then you have your architecture linked PCIe (GPU) slot with your actual GPU in there as expected. Perfect for work/play mix (much higher budget) = Intel modern APU plus Nvidia GPU. Perfect for work/play mix (much lower budget) = Intel or AMD modern APU plus AMD GPU. Perfect for just work = AMD modern APU + modern AMD GPU. Perfect for just games (better raster, lesser ray tracing) = Intel modern CPU + modern AMD GPU. Perfect for just games (RTX all the way babyyyy) = Intel CPU + modern nVidia GPU. Just FYI I am a huge huge AMD supporter, I hold stocks and I buy lots of their products. But I have also to be objective in my work and feel that each setup has it's merits and you just have to get the right one for your own workload.

I think it could work for people moving from a 10 or 16 series card, use Arc for newer games that can fully take advantage of it's performance and your older card for other games, I picked up my 1660 SUPER for 200 euros pre covid but they're still ridiculously expensive around here... An Arc card could probably beat out a 20 series card in price if they were brought to market here (ignoring the used market)

Mbr2gpt is such a great command line tool. Literally just went thru this a few days ago. Although, you do NOT have to do it only in advanced startup. You can use the normal command line keys "mbr2gpt /convert /disk:(system disk) /allowfullOS" and it will allow you to run this command and convert the drive to gpt within the desktop while running cmd in administrator mode. I will add that you should validate the drive first to make sure there will be no issues. The command is pretty much the same but with one difference. Just to reiterate, the convert command is "mbr2gpt /convert /disk:insert your system disk number /allowfullOS", you don't need allowfullOS if you are in advanced startup. The validate command is mbr2gpt /validate /disk:insert your system disk number /allowfullOS. Again, take out allowfullOS if you are in advanced startup, only use it if you want to use this cmd tool within the desktop cmd line in administrator mode.

Oh hey MBR2GPT. I've had fun with that one. If you've got a problem with "can't be performed" it's probably an issue with swap space, and if you shrink a partition (say like a gig or two) it then has enough to work. I've done like 20 computers at work like that thanks to a fun combination of legacy boot, windows update, and 3rd party encryption causing dead boots.

You don't even have to convert your bootdrive from mbr to gpt. UEFI supports booting from any fat32 partition, regardless of the partition table. Just reuse your boot partition or create a new one with fat32 and use bcdboot to write a new UEFI compatible bootloader to it. All from windows without having to boot into a winpe. The switch is only necessary if you want to use a partition that is larger than 2 TB.

Intel choose this method to cut time to work on dx11, microsoft did not push them to use it if I know it correctly. Why it is microsoft's fault then. Dxvk is totally different solution, unlike dx9to12 it is totally aimed to get better/nativelike performance. It is just a poor decision from intel then. I simply do not thing dx9to12 is the problem since it should not be used this type of "performance" cards from the first place. @@josephdu1952 True, but there is little that you can realistically do. Take it from someone who has an A380. Arc Control has noped itself out of existence with the latest BETA drivers and I've spent about eight hours in the last week trying to manually uninstall everything, using DDU, scouring the web for a unrelated error code supposedly related to Windows Update. The only thing I've yet to do barring deleting a folder in Windows Update is completely reinstall my system. Thankfully, I don't have much anymore that I absolutely care about and I do have some external storage to stick the stuff that I do have, but I have never had to nuke a system just to get basic functionality from a piece of hardware. And this is including Linux drivers for AMD and Nvidia. Those involved some staring at a terminal for about an hour, but never chucking a system out. The worst part is that the drivers are so borked, that fucking QSV AV1 on Handbrake is fucked and I don't want to spend time trying to figure out how ffmpeg actually works just to transcode my Blu-Rays. IT HAD ONE FUCKING JOB AND IT FUCKING FAILED! Great job Raja! And since the community is both so small and new, no one really has a good solution for any problem, so you're forced to figure it out on your own. I was told that I should just return the thing and realistically, I just might if I still can and score a used 5500XT instead. Hopefully, Intel does get it sorted out tho. 250+ FPS on AV1 (when it actually works) is crazy and means that I can use its unimaginable cosmic powers to stash a bunch of movies and stuff in a itty bitty living space. If it fails your OS is gone with, in my experience, zero chance of recovery and it can fail even if the initial validation command passes. I've seen about a 50% success rate and nothing I've ever tried on a system that fails has gotten it to work(I made a backup first and then would reinstall the back up to keep trying). The issue is that using non-standard dll files can appear to be a cheat to anti-cheat software, so there will be some online games that this won't be usable with. Here is a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZzXk51nmaeDfLs&ab_channel=RandomGaminginHD

Can you guys please make a video on the gaming performance of intel arc gpus on linux. This should be really interesting because all DirectX games get translated to Vulkan on there anyways and it would be very interesting how that would impact performance.

I'm with ya, Linus. I put an Arc A750 in my personal computer. I'm praying that driver and software updates will make it a worthy fixture. I got it for affordable AV1 hardware encoding, but now I have to troubleshoot and hope Intel squashes all the bugs I'm running into on my X570 chipset system.

The recent massive improvements on DX9 performance with a driver update does make me think this card will "age like fine wine" as Linus has said about other products. The hardware potential of ARC has not yet been unlocked but with software improvements a pretty cheap ARC 750 could end up being a sleeper deal. I'm sure Intel isn't done improving the drivers.

18:53 that's why I've gotten into the habit of symlinking appdata and other directories and having my windows install be a small partition. Windows itself doesn't inflate much, but the appdata totally does. I recently swapped over to a new Windows 10 install and within about an hour, I was pretty much back up and running exactly how I was previously. Plenty of programs picked up their settings automatically with no issue

@@fynkozari9271 my windows install was old, it was originally MBR and was carried over from a HDD to the sata SSD, so I was running my bios in legacy mode. You can't boot off a nvme from legacy, only from the more modern UEFI. So before I could clone my drive to the nvme I had to convert it from MBR to GPT, then change the bios to disable legacy boot and only us UEFI.

Linus, the next time you get to use and benchmark ARC GPUs it would be really interesting if you could also test them using the DXVK libraries. They are a translation layer from DX 9/10/11 to Vulkan originally developed for Linux, but they do work on Windows too. As the ARC GPUs perform way better with Vulcan, it'd be really interesting to see if DXVK makes a difference

I bought the A770 16gb to replace a dead 980TI for a 4k TV. So far have had only 1 issue with it on Sonic Frontiers, but that was fixed in the most recent patch. Modern warfare 2 has looked amazing on it, and haven't had any problems with the other games I play (table top simulator mostly). Played a bit of 40k dark tide without much issue so far but seems to have some frame stutter here or there. I hope ARC continues to do well and we get more INTEL cards in the future.

16:55 Yep, that's the exact reaction I had when I found out I can't use ReBAR on my machine. Carried forward my drives since Vista.. and they still have a working Vista/7 install on them (well, ignoring Ryzen not having USB drivers), along with my cloned 7 upgraded to 10 which is my daily driver. That's literally 15 years of history I have to uproot and destroy to be able to use ReBAR, a PCI-E feature that's existed for 20. Aint the industry great? And to be clear, mbr2gpt doesn't solve my problem, because the old OS' won't start anymore regardless of CSM being enabled or not. It only works for the Win10 installs. And to make matters worse, mbr2gpt only works for active system drives, so I can't even convert a cloned drive the old OS's are on as a workaround. And then there's my HBA.. which needs CSM enabled to have the drives show up. Having to change BIOS options every single time I boot to a different OS is even more of a pain than booting to it in the first place. I'm probably a 0.001% use case, but it's a show stopping issue for me.

The fact it sounds like Linus' htpc is set up with a single drive, single partition really surprises me. Having a separate OS and games drive in my desktops has seemed like a must for literally twenty years for me, I'd rather buy a slightly slower CPU or GPU, or less ram, than have to go with a single drive in any of the computers I've built. There's just a level of convenience that comes with dual drives, especially when one (or god forbid both) drives are HDDs. If, though I should say when, something craps out, you can get back up and running so much faster, since gone are the days of most programs needing registry keys and thus reinstallation if the OS drive goes down.

I'm glad I had a much easier experience with my Intel Arc 770 LE. I swap around video cards in 2 different machines just to switch up my PC experience now and then, so things don't feel stale. (use old cards sometimes on an older machine and appreciate what 10 year old tech can still do, go to my most powerful rig and appreciate what new tech can do) When I pulled my AMD 5700xt out and put in the Arc 770LE it went as smooth as usual when uninstalling old drivers and putting in the new ones. Intel ARC drivers installed in about the same amount of time as the AMD ones have with a pretty good sample size. I notice minor issues with the Intel drivers but I haven't pushed them too hard yet. While I've been more of an AMD "fan boy" in the last 6 years or so, with Intel getting into the GPU market I'm going to lean Intel this time around.
