Trying something new is usually exciting. Like venturing into that section of the gym you always avoid. Or visiting a new restaurant. Both of these are relatively painless and unless you are caught on camera falling off the gym equipment, usually lead to very little public humiliation.
It’s a very different process if you’re a car manufacturer. Taking a crack at a new segment requires many years of research, development, testing and most importantly - a massive lump of cash.
For many years, Jaguar had the skills, engineering know-how and confidence to pull of a car like the new XE, but the finances were, in a manner of speaking, problematic.
But now, emboldened by the success and popularity of cars like the F-Type, Jaguar have decided to tackle arguably the toughest premium segment of all; the segment dominated by cars like the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class and Audi A4.
Right off the bat, the XE looks good, if a little restrained. It’s immediately recognisable as a modern Jaguar and fans of the brand’s general look and feel will not be disappointed.
The interior is particularly luxurious for this segment with leather covering the entire dashboard, boldly double stitched and framing a touchscreen featuring Jaguar’s brand new infotainment system, which is a much needed leap-forward from the long-serving, clunky system that it replaces.
In this video, we’ll detail what the new XE is like to drive, which engines are available and more importantly which one you should buy, what the boot space is like, as well as the rear legroom, and of course we’ll dive into the pricing, which is…interesting.

Great channel, I especially love what the cinematographer did with this video, the music prepares the tragedy of the price. I loved the part when you got out of the car and went back to the boot then back again, and the rewind, to bring us back to what is important, the price. I am watching this videos mostly for the quality of the production, you could be talking about anything. It might be the best car channel out there, and I am glad to see it grow. Very good job

Audi just need to transform the A4 because everyone is complaining about it that it's hasn't changed a bit only the headlights have changed, what a shame for the XE that it's down fall is that it's expensive while the 3 series and c-class cost less and offer high quality cars with all the bits and pieces you need in this wonderful segment. Great review as always.

Journalist often compare cars as if all things are equal and omitting the there is something for prestige over BMW and Audi. It's NOT like bucause it's in D segment that all those cars are the same and should cost the same, drive the same etc... As if the manufactures all walk down the d segment isle and picked from the same options to build their version. The only difference is Audi picked this and Merc picked that and the end result is what you compare. Where is the ranking in pedigree and not just numbers. All things are not equal.

Turbo Snail​ in the UK yes, but here in south Africa its way too expensive, after configuring my preferred XE the price went up to about R733 000 which is a lot of money

Alan s. Hiwa​ I don't think it's worth it, unless it's a very unique car that you really like. There are significant import duty rates and value added tax rates which are charged by officials

"first crack for this segment"? Funny how quickly "motor journalists" forgot the x-type. And the new A4 looks stunning and modern. Unlike this XE, which definitely looks spottier, but also more dated.
