Yet another great video,what a time capsule you found. The quality street tins are from the 60's. Some of the furniture and fireplaces would be real collector items now. What a shame they will just disappear forever soon. Please keep finding these places so we can all see and enjoy them. Great work.😀

I did some sleuthing based on the few hints I could find in the video. Apparently a relative of the owner of this place runs a painting business in the same city (you can see one of his vans on Google Streetview) and their web site claims the current owner is the seventh generation in the family business. I even found an obituary for the owner whose name is on the window above the door, he passed away in 1954 aged 64. If you search for "Libolex" (one of the products on the shelves in the paint store, apparently powdered wall paint) you'll find a bunch of pictures of the same property. My best guess is there was some kind of family altercation over the property when the last owner who lived there passed away and no one wants to do anything about it. Or it's been sold to a developer who's not interested in building anything there, either waiting for it to continue increasing in value or considering it cash that can be freed up quickly by selling the property.

What an amazing place! I suspect some of those paints might actually still work if you stir them properly and remove any skin from the top! I've definitely used paints that were close to 40 years old and they were still OK-ish. Judging by the counter I think that was actually a store, not someone's excessive hobby. Probably doing some architectural salvage on the side, that would explain the stacked tiles, fireplace bits, doors and windows in the large shed. The open bins probably contained pure pigments that you dissolved in water and added to your white paint or even made your paint from scratch using various kinds of binders (cellulose glue and possible casein being the most likely, or possibly emulsion binder). An eco paint store near where I grew up still sold natural pigments in tins well into the 1990s, if not longer. BTW, did you notice the old toilet cistern on the wall next to the water heater in the store's loft? Looks like there used to be a small loo/bathroom up there at some point. It looks like someone started to do up that loft (there's some new plasterboard already on the walls and more waiting to go up) and for some reason stopped. That's 50k km, not miles on that van, so it's almost new (about 30k miles)! The bath is probably full of rainwater judging by the state of the floors all over the place. The broken window right next to it doesn't help either. One thing I love about that bathroom is the two ancient non-earthed sockets right next to the sink and fairly close to the bath /s The kitchen units look surprisingly modern to me, more 1980s than 70s, much newer than anything else in the house.

Hi Colin.... Was I getting frustrated as you kept walking over newspapers with potential dates on them in my insanity I was shouting at you "Newspaper Colin Newspaper" The sewing machine was a spinning wheel ! Great find , though as usual sad. Lovely little nativities. Now you know what quality street tins looked like and what good value they were in the 60's I can remember them at Christmastime when I was little.

Late 1980s the quality street tins. On ebay for nearly £40 each
@philipmcdonagh10942 жыл бұрын
Okay TV & gas meter 1980's, Quality Street late 50's. That's definitely not a sewing machine, definitely a bicycle wheel arranged into some sort of spinning wheel or a crafting lathe. That's poster paint in the lin bins, is or was a powder you added water to which gave you water colour paint. You could buy it loose or in small tins, got a box full of them one Christmas. Love to do up that van, shame it will probably just rot away.

A friend of mine bought an old colliery agent's house. There was an old black painted fireplace that he said he was going to rip out. I said to strip the paint off and varnish the wood. When they had the paint stripped off it was a white marble under. Was he ever glad he didn't take a sledge hammer to it.

@thefamouseccles18272 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of wealth and a lot of age in this place yet the building itself is fairly mundane. Industrial space attached suggests a multi-generation family business. You've got marble/stone reclamation and painting going on, so craftspeople of some kind? I saw nothing to date last occupation past the early 80s
