Imu word is also Umi. I believe it's Sea in Japanese. In One Piece chapter 490 and in anime 381 we see these shadow creatures these figures of Florian Triangle creatures for the first time. Even more so that Imu can shapeshift into one of those type of shadows, and they life in ocean and One Piece world land has been flooded so that there is only few islands, instead of continents. And Imu want to flood everything once more.

As a fellow author knowing Odas way of creating comedy that is so obscure i would say that Umi (Ocean), ate Devil Fruit that made it a human like shadow devil figure. It turned it's name around so that Umi is Imu, and hope that nobody figures it out. Ocean itself is also immortal on itself. And it tries turn one piece into a waterworld. And Ocean eating Devil Fruit as stupid as Sword Eating Elephant devil fruit, but it's one piece.

I believe Imu was a being known as Icka and along with Nika and 2 other brothers they lived on the moon as the strongest warriors. After the moon started running out of reaources. The brothers came down and fought a massive red seperent known as the red line and became worshipped as gods after defeating it. Imu being the Rain God. Imu convinced the serpent to sleep in exchange for blood sacrifices. After the other 2 brothers found out they were killed by Imu. After Nika found out he lead the giants in a rebellion against imu. After killing Imu Nika spent his life freeing the sacrifices to red line before slowly dying. During the void century Joy boy found out about the serpent and planned to fight it. After finding some devil fruits he ate the Nika fruit and St. Imu D. Narona ate the Icka fruit. Icka was taken over by Imu and knowing they could never beat the red Line led the 20 kings against Joy Boy. Imu then gain imortality and began secretly ruling the world. Continuing the sacrifices and squashing any attempts to fight the monster. I belive Imu is based off of Tezcatlipoca with Nika being Quetzaquatol. With the story being inspired by the Aztecs 5 suns myth. So don't be surprised when we find out Imu has Giant Black Jaguar Transformation.

Given how anime usually goes, I suspect we're going to find that imu is the devil who granted the devil fruits powers which is why Sadu's power didn't effect him. It's very typical of anime to delve into and deconstruct their unique magic "system" for the final arc and devil fruit dates back to the very beginning. I think it's inevitable for him to be tempted to lift up that rock rather than leave the mystery of devil fruit as a mystery.

One Piece is using many ideas from old religious texts. Enki might be Joy Boy while Imu is Enlil. One of the Five Elbers said when they were about to destroy Lulusia because it has many rebels "It is how the creators want it to be." Meaning, he was referring to the creators of the human race (all races in one piece) wanting no rebellion but only servitude because they created humans for that purpose. Enki, one of the creators, no longer want humans to be enslaved (most likley because he fell in love with a human), but Enlil disagrees and they fought. Enki died from the battle, but he could resurrect himself.
