It's been known now for over 25 years that the Northern Atlantic Common Eel, spawn in Sargasso Doldrums, it also happens in the South Atlantic and also there are same sorts of Doldrums in the Pacific for more Eels to spawn in It was filmed in the Sargasso Sea eels spawning on the Sargasso weed beds which comes from Mexico Gulf

Excuse me for giving a little presentation of Islam, because it is very misunderstood nowadays, especially on those « Antichrist's » times, where media and politics are mixed to distort history and truth. Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them). Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI). Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad). Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning! I did a project on european eels when I was at uni, back in 2017. Eel migration was still a bit of a mystery then, we literally had an eel expert in to answer questions and most of his answers were "we don't know yet". Cool to hear that 5-6 years later, a little more of the mystery has been solved!

We've known the general "the come from near the Sargasso" for around a century though. Some European scientist got a bunch of ship captains to periodically let down nets, and send him the catch and the location so he could do a survey of what was going through which sections of the Atlantic. The conclusion (after sifting through several years of results) was the determination that their spawning grounds are in the Sargasso. They were recently caught _on film,_ but that's about it. We've known where European Eels come from for around a century.

nevermind the larval stage - adult eels go from living 25+ years in freshwater, migrating kilometers over land when it rains (you forgot to mention that part) to all sorts of ponds and lakes not even connected to the ocean to migrating back through the ocean at depths of up to 1400m?! goddamn that's a crazy fish! also that ~25 year age minimum for breeding, and spawning just one time before dying, explains my confusion about hearing that european eels are nowadays considered to be a highly threatened species [edit: IUCN critically endangered, the closest category to extinction] after previously being one of the most common and cheap fish everybody took for granted. 😬 I think we have a passenger fish situation on our hands. though in terms of reproduction, it's more like whaling or fishing greenland sharks.

Technically CR (Critically Endangered) is the second closest category to Extinct, not the closest. Extinct in the Wild is the category between CR and E. I work with CR species in the wild and have had to write up some of the IUCN species descriptions.

There's a phenomenal book by Patrik Svensson called "Ålevangeliet" ("The Eel Gospels") that studies the murky and enigmatic nature and history of eels. It tells the tale of the Sargasso migration told about in this video, but also chronicles mankind's attempt to locate their genitalia (Sigmund Freud studied eels for years in his youth; the book strongly hints that his later frustrations derive from his failure to locate eel genitalia), and how eels that are stuck in earlier states of being (such as as yellow eels) kind of seem to not age, like at all, over literal decades. The book has also been turned into an opera.

I will never understand why things that have no flavor become "delicacies". Shark fin is like this too, and even worse. Fishers catch them, hack the fins off, and leave them to die. It devastates shark populations. Shark fin is flavorless and the texture is weird, and yet it's still considered a delicacy and a status symbol.

Then classist fools fall for the specialness of the delicacy and pay ridiculous amounts of money for it without using their brains. I feel like part of it is also because the belief in medicinal or mystical properties of it. People eat shark fin soup not only for the status and rarity but also the (unproven) properties like anti aging, combating disease, restorative and regeneration, etc. If anything is to blame, ultimately it’d be how we center humanity as the leading point in our imaginative reality/socio-construct rather than how it is in actuality. This is why diamond which consist of one of the most abundant element in the universe (that we could even create in a lab) is much more expensive than gold simply because of supply, demand and some manipulation

Hi! Marine biologist/zoologist here. We have seen eels travel to the Sargasso Sea en masse once a year and then baby eels swim back to the freshwater systems they grow up in. But because science is science, it can't be stated as mystery solved until the spawning behavior is witnessed in real time.

Science isn't a collection of unassailable facts. It's a method. Some things can be safely extrapolated, some cannot. Science has discovered a great deal about and solved quite a few mysteries about say, black holes, without directly observing specific phenomenon. The effect the phenomenon had combined with other direct observations led to a discovery with no direct observations. If black holes interest you I'd suggest looking them up, there's too much to go into here. My point is, you're sort of correct, but not empirically.

Hi marine biologist/ zoologist, I'm somebody also interested in the field and just recently did an internship at an aquarium here in Finland, which, coincidentally, happens to be the only place in the world where a yellow eel has turned into a silver eel naturally, or well, spontaneously. I managed to watch as scientist from the Netherlands weighed, drew blood, did ultrasounds and measured some of the eels at the aquarium. So maybe, in the future, they might spot the signs of an eel turning silver! And then impregnate that eel with sperm from male eels from the research lab for eels in the Netherlands. So we might see the whole process soon! Hopefully, of course! Then science can't say that it's still a mystery lol (Yes the eel mamas were quite big haha, the scientists let me handle one of the specimens, very cool experience. Would recommend eel touching at least once in your marine biologist life!)

Interesting. I'm now 71, and well over 50 years ago, when I was in my early teens, my father told me that the eels all migrate to the Sargasso Sea, and that's where the larvae are found. So I guess the new breakthrough is that we have found mature adult eels at the end of the migration, actually entering the Sargasso Sea.

The oldest European eel was supposedly 150 + years old (the Brantevik eel). They were kept in wells to keep the water clean and has since been found in many old wells, still alive.

@@twinturboray about the Branteviks eel, it's true the exact age couldn't be proven because they couldn't find the ear-bone. In another case of well eel ( Urshult eel), the age however could be proven to be minimum 88+ yo. The fact, that eels in centuries have been kept in wells as natural filters is indisputable though.

Glass eels fishing has been cancelled this year in Atlantic Canada, but there are hundreds of poachers who have decided not to pay attention. I live on a tidal river, and my backyard is the first stream that enters the river and it is a breeding area for the eels. They are now endangered in my area.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy. Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful. Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI). Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. I also grew up in the Annapolis valley and I can remember people harvesting glass eels from the tidal boar rivers feeding the Digby gut / Annapolis basin !!

Quite similar to the New Zealand longfin eel, which is a very long-lived fish, with records of females reaching 106 years old and weighing up to 24 kg. They migrate to the Pacific Ocean near Tonga to breed at the end of their lives.

This type of Eel has been around a good while (before the breakup and separation from Europe). Their breeding grounds seemingly have never changed regardless of continental drift. Chances are you're correct on it being the location being where they first evolved, and as the land mass separated they just started wandering & adapting to other environments over time.

The continents drift apart and the Sargasso Sea is probably the oldest soil of the Atlantic ocean, existed when the entire ocean was just a lake... And now somehow they are the victim of their own habit of depending on their lifecycle of going to exactly one 'orgy' away from the shore where predators might too easily find them... to mate and reproduce and then go nicely to shore... the idea of having one big 'orgy' is also a clever survival trick, you make so many critters at once that the available predators just can't eat them all and enough of them do survive...

New Zealand has a native eel which also spawns in the ocean, but it is still not known for certain exactly where in the Pacific that is. I have seen "Near Tonga" and "Near New Caledonia" mentioned.

Looking back in my fishing diaries eels were fairly common in freshwater and near the coast until 1993. In the last 30 years I have only caught (and returned) three small ones. Eels now have protected status by the Environment Agency as they are endangered. Adult eels ae pretty tough cookies and can tolerate poor conditions better than most fish. At one time eels were the only fish able to survive in the river Thames. So it can't simply be pollution of our freshwaters that is leading to their demise. I suspect there is something nasty afoot in the Sargasso Sea.

@@HappyBeezerStudios Eels used to be a delicacy. Cut the head off, remove the guts, remove the skin (like taking off a stocking), chop into sections and simmer in water for 20 minutes and they come out jellied. They also should have stopped moving by then.

It's probably habitat fragmentation. Freshwater disconnected from other freshwater. Dried wetlands. Straightened rivers. Disturbance by ships and ferries. As well as climate change.

Over my lifetime, I've read again and again about the mystery of eel migration and reproduction. It's been a real obsession for some folks. But the most important lesson I feel from this video is this: these guys are really cute! In each stage of life, too. Another critter that looks like it's serenely smiling. I know it's not, but I don't care! They aren't harmed by my anthropomorphizing.

I wonder how they developed such a complex behavior. Were they alive 130+ million years ago, when Europe and North America were still close together? That would mean they’ve been swimming further and further to reach their spawning grounds as the continents have separated, but I can’t think of any other explanation as to why a 1.5 year migration through a habitat far more dangerous than their freshwater home would evolve in such a species, unless the Sargasso Sea is the holy grail of baby eel sanctuaries.

Progressions form "eels come from dead eels or pieces of eel skin - or maybe sunlight reflecting off the Nile..." to more and more precise data/information, and the use of sophisticated tools and instruments to gather solid imperical data which helps eventually lead to TRUTH, lol. I've been waiting for a water creature to start my subscription to the pin club, and it's one of my favorites! Glass eel fishing is a big part of the economy where I grew up, hearing that it's often illegal or trafficked is...well...interesting, but honestly not surprising to me 😅 those babies can sell for thousands per pound, one fishing trip and you're rolling in the millions no joke 👀 for poor rural fishing towns that kind of money is no joke

Eels are remarkable. It's when juveniles swim back thousands of km and then will even climb up waterfalls and dams to get to the habitats they are adapted to spending the majority of their lives in that you know... These fish super evolved.

The glass eels have another name, they’re called elvers which I think is amazing. The Australian and surrounding countries eels are also just as strange and nobody is sure where or how they reproduce just that it’s somewhere near New Caledonia. I love finding them in the wild when I’m out filming for my documentaries, they can be so far up rivers that have multiple waterfalls and seemingly impassable terrain but somehow still get there

On the other hand Japanese eels do have gonads and are also bred by authorities and farmers in the northern parts of the Philippines. They were originally brought there during World War Two when the Japanese occupied the Philippines. The area in the Cordilleras where they are farmed is famous for its rice terraces, and the farmers grow eels as well as rice in the same terraces. Apparently the eels are also beneficial to the rice plants, eating some insects that can damage the plants, and they provide extra income for the rice farmers.

I don't think that's correct, it seems all eel farms start with wild caught glass eels, i have not seen any credible claim of captive breeding, and i imagine rearing the oceanic planktonic larva is going to be a challenge even if were possible to get the adults to spawning physiology in a captive environment.

During the International Geophysical Year (1956) researchers trawling in the Sargasso brought up a larval eel that was five inches long. As the usual eel larva is only 1/10th of an inch long, they calculated that if this larval form had grown to adulthood proportionally, the adult would have been 200 feet long. This would explain old sailors' tales about sea serpents in the Sargasso.

@@Appletank8 There are what is sometimes called "W" and "Z" where both are required, but do not determine the internal gender of the offspring; gender is influenced by external factors such as: temperature during incubation; nutrient availability during larval/juvenile stage; local gender ratios during adolescent/adult stage. Some species do not deviate to a specific gender until just before becoming mature and participating during mating season(s); though most that follow such strategy often die just after mating/incubating eggs.

We have known about this since the late 70s when it was filmed of eels spawning on Sargasso weed rafts, it was later they found out that Eels will use the natural ocean currents, Like they will arrive in Europe using the Gulf Stream, and they will use the North Atlantic Drift current to latch onto the Southern Gulf Drift current which takes them into the starting point of the Weed Rafts of the Florida Coast where they end up in the Sargasso Sea to spawn

I live in Europe and I’ve seen lots of eels when I was a child. My dad used to take me out fishing very early in the morning when the grass was still dewy. He used to fish in two ponds that were quite close together but separated by a grassland. In the early hours of the morning we could see the eels slider from one pond to the other. They do so to look for other feeding grounds. It’s quite a sight. Now sadly eels are an endangered species. It’s true that the glass eels are traded. Especially Chinese people think it’s a delicatesse.

Fascinating video about fascinating animals! A relative of mine is convinced that eels are endadgered due to US military equipment in the sargasso sea messing with the animals navigation system, as eels only recently got endangered, and they can only breed in one place. I'm not so sure myself, but it'd be cool to understand why they need to go to the sargasso sea, and how they find their way there.

But the thing of them being born in the Sargazzo sea and spending their adult life in Europe was already known at least when I was a kid in the 80s. It's interesting that they do the opposite of what the atlantic salmon does: living in the sea and migrating to the rivers to reproduce and die.

Here's a thought: could someone use e-dna (environmental dna) to try and narrow down the specific spawning site? I know currents would make it complicated, but it'd be less expensive than disposable GPS tags

This works only for north Atlantic eels. What about South Atlantic. North Pacific. South Pacific. Indian Ocean. There are eels everywhere. There was a Xena show where they were handling (in New Zealand) these brutes of eels, had to be 5 feet long and as big as your thigh. They're not all going to the Sargasso Sea.

American eels also spawn in the Saragaso sea. I remember when I was a kid all you had to do was throw your hook in a river and reel it in. You were almost guaranteed to have an eel on the line

It takes over a third to a half of a current human lifespan just to see them grow gonads!?! How have they not gone extinct yet!?! We eat so many of them!! Do they have a ton of eggs and most of them don't die die to predators and things!?! I have so many more questions that need answered now!!!

the IUCN lists them as critically endangered, which is one step away from extinction. apparently eels are in particularly desperate need of bans on catching or selling them, but the fishery lobby is successfully delaying regulatory action, and it's sort of generally failing to register that a fish that used to be so common and cheap is now in need of protection.

Well, we have lost ~98% of the European eel population in the last 35 years. Majority of the glass eels are caught to be raised and slaughtered in eel farms. And the general population has no idea because those farms market themselves as if they were breeding them. But yes, they spawn a lot of offspring at once. It's why they lose the digestive tract during migration, to make room for as many egg/sperm cells as possible.

When my son was little his favorite book was called The Sargasso Sea. It was about sargassum fish, the bermuda triangle and the mysterious eel migration which ended with them being served on plates. That was his favorite part because hes always loved eating eel sushi lol

Continental drift was a main factor in eel evolution. It is believed the common ancestor of eels lived east of the supercontinent Pangaea, in the Tethys Ocean (present day Indonesia). The ancestral eel, like modern eels, must have made regular migrations between its spawning region in the ocean and its nursery areas in the rivers. As the northern part of Pangaea separated from the southern part, the Tethys Ocean was connected with the sea in the east with the sea in the west. The ancestral eel was thus able to spread into the western sea.

The town I live in (in the UK) has a major eel river running past the end of the local jetty and I have caught specimens up to and over four pounds though most of them are smaller as they start their journey from sea to river. One major highlight is the rare occasion when we can look down into the water and see literally millions of juveniles swimming at the surface around the end of the jetty.

The north american freshwater eel is also a mystery. They are born way upstream in very shallow creeks and travel downstream all their lives. No one knows how the eggs get upstream in the first place. The adults never go back.

I found a glass eel in a river as a kid while hunting minnows it was nearly invisible, i also found a pink eel in a rock pool when i was around 8 it was the lenth of my arm and as thick as my wrist.

When I was a kid back in the mid/late 60s my buddy and I would hike along the small streams that fed the Hudson River. There were always lots of eels swimming and slithering around the rocks in the creeks. Once in a while we'd catch one and give it to the old man who cut them up for fishing bait. Haven't been there in decades so I don't know if they are still there. Actually, the Hudson river is a lot closer to the Sargasso than Spain.

I have stopped eating eel despite liking it. Due to complex reproduction and life cycles, they can't really be farmed so they are actually just catching the wild baby eels and then growing them, but this is destroying their wild populations and the overall population is shrinking.

I still have questions… 1) Do we have enough information to simulate this long migration process and reproductive end cycle in the lab? If not why? There are theories that this has to do with salinity adaption, stress, oceanic pressure adaption, and even the phases of the moon. Which are causal and which are coincidental? 2) You mentioned physiological changes in the eels late stage reproductive cycle. Do we know why they must travel to these specific locations? 3) other catadromous fish such as the Australian greyling reproduce near the mouths or rivers and estuaries instead of the depths of the ocean. Why is this? How do they differ from eels? 4) Does this reproduction process shorten their life span? In other words would they live longer if they had not gone through this stressful migration and adaption but never reproduce? Or would they actually be able to reproduce? Would not making it the full mean they are fertile but have no other eels to mate with given the variability of their location to the spawning area. Thus making their reproduction meaningless.

Many years ago I worked with a captain who had sailed around most of the worlds oceans on Supertankers. He told us that a lot of eels are born or hatched in the Sargasso Sea, as he had talked to fishermen in that area who sometimes caught elvers (baby eel). Maybe it was just a "fisher-mans" story, but who knows.
