Gang - thanks for the videos. Just a friendly heads up - on those climbing harnesses you use to go up the mast, you need to make sure you "double back" all of the buckles. They can fail(webbing pulls back through under load) if not. In the video you can see Brady and Max do not have their leg loops doubled back, hopefully the waist buckle was! Looking forward to the rest of the videos.

Rigging a fore-stay out on the water is one hell of a job and yet you guys manage to make it seem fun. Thanks for sharing

I thought the cartoon using pirates to explain their process was pretty ingenious, and the crew worked flawlessly using Brian and Brady's plan to hoist the fore-stay into position. You really have to be a problem solver living in those conditions...and both the brothers always come through no matter what needs to be done.

Delos was in good shape here. New sails, standing rigging, bottom paint, plus all the other repairs. It's a good thing as you were about to cross the Indian Ocean. Wow, i been around boats all my life. owned 7 boats. mostly power boats. used to race a catamaran when i was younger and never knew anything about the " Mast tuning. " I learn something new on alot of your video's. they are very enjoyable to watch while doing dishes or cooking in the kitchen. Have Fun ! Awesome Video's ! side note- i was wondering if i'd see any refrigeration parts in the vids. Looks like u had a Boxer fan go out on that condenser for the freezer. it's a good idea to keep an eye on those fans, it's crucial to compressor survival. keep those condensers clean too. you must be able to see through them with a flashlight. any fan blowing through the condenser will do in a pinch. keep area ventilated too . heat must be able to get out of that compartment and cool air in. cool air in front & hot air out the back.

Hi, nice one, keep up the good work! Some advise for going aloft / tying in a harness in general: Use a double figure eight knot or a double bowline. Double figure eight is preferred because it's almost impossible to get it wrong. A single bowline can flip over and open up if it gets tension from the inside of the loop, e.g. you accidentally hook it onto something. And try to tie the knot as close as possible to the harness so there is no chance to stick your arm through it. That's what they teach for rock climbing in Germany so it's probably over the top for going aloft, but hey, we like it as safe as possible :-) Cheers, Andi
@svdelos9 жыл бұрын
+Horst Kotte Hey Andi, you know you're the first person that's really explained why the double figure eight is better for climbing than a bowline. That actually makes sense. Cool to learn something every day I think. That being said I will probably stick with my trusty bowline for going aloft as I can tie one with my eyes closed in about 5 seconds upside down in the darkness and we do have two lines for safety anyway. Fair Winds and wishing you the best! Brian

I'm no marine specialist, but as a diesel/heavy equipment mechanic for over 30 years I am a bit concerned about the pin situation on the stay(s) where you had to have that pin manufactured. The issue as I see it is the mechanical stress that pin and the terminal end of the stay will have exerted on it. Because the OLD pin and stay were the right fit, the pin had a large contact pattern on the terminal end, perhaps nearly half the circumference of the pin and the terminal end both, distributing the load... In this new setup with the large terminal end holes and smaller pin the contact pattern is reduced to a mere point increasing the mechanical stresses on those parts pretty dramatically. It's sort of akin to someone walking in deep snow... with and without snowshoes. I'm not saying it is something that will cause you immediate trouble, and those parts may be designed with a wide strength safety margin and never cause an issue but I just had to mention it so that you at least are aware of it, and if it DOES cause trouble (metal deformation and cracks) you will have kept an eye on it before it gets bad.
@waderogers6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I too noticed that the pin on the terminal end was a bit too small and while that won't cause immediate problems, it will the the long run because the stress taken by the pin isn't spread out over a larger are but rather is concentrated on a smaller area. Not a good idea. And I'm no armchair sailor either. Been sailing since I was 15 and am now nearly 60 years old.

Brian, FYI...Those fans are pretty much indestructible. Use something like the tip of a razor blade knife and carefully lift out that small round plug in the center. Under that is a small e-ring. When that is removed, you can seperate the blade from the housing. Use some mild solvent and clean the bushing / bearing parts and add some light oil. Oh and when you lose or destroy the e-ring, just wrap a turn and a half of fine cupper wire in the groove. I have run them that way for more than 20 years. Thanks for sharing! Fair winds!

Me and my girlfriend recently re rigged our cat and yes it is a job! especially with just the two of us! Interesting about been able to tighten the rigging as much as you want- this was something I had been trying to figure out for ages i.e. correct rigging tension, So was great to hear it from an expert! Now I can go make that forestay tighter..... Cant wait until the next vid! woooooo!
@svdelos9 жыл бұрын
+surfynic Yeah, you can get tension gauges as well but we found just sailing and tightening the stays on different tacks until the leward stays didn't have any play even fully loaded seemed to do the trick. I have seen on some cats there the leward stays had a bit of play though and the owner said that was normal for their rig type. Not really sure if cats are very different. I do know we tried to have 4 fingers or less of droop in the center of the forestay with full sail out. This really improved our upwind performance. Fair winds and happy tuning! Brian
