We finished the Audi A8, but there's a problem with the mild hybrid 48V system. Is it our fault ?

What an absaloute ball ache, on every level ! Good to see some honesty from a garage as well, we all hate it when jobs go badly. Im always learning something new from this channel, but I tell you....I dont want to learn anything about the 48v system 😢 Best use for that space under the boot carpet is a full sized spare.

There are several possibilities to come out of this situation : 1. Try to charge on the 12 V just with a normal charger with very low amper - for instance 1A or 2A for 24h. Then start the car and check if it is charging. 2. If not, go 19 Gateway, search for: reinitialise 48V system after crash. Or reinitialise the 48V after deenergisaton, or both one after another. I think it was in basic settings.

Put a charger on the 12v jump posts, you should then hear a click at the 48v battery. It will then charge the 48v system via the DC/DC converter. If the contactors in the battery don't close then the system can block the starter generator from charging. You can check the output from the starter generator with a multimeter and should be around 50v. Also, if the starter generator is faulty then it will block the 48v battery from closing the contactors. I've seen a number of times where we have to replace both the 48v battery and the starter generator together as one can damage the other. It's not complex in theory but what makes it complex is trying to diagnose what is causing the system to not work.

To charge from 12V->48V you need VCDS/ODIS to close the connector AND you need a charger that can do >80 A continuous.

You normally have to charge the 12v through the 12v jump posts for a good hour or two depending on how flat it is to bring the 48v system above around the 15% mark then it will be able to re energise/ pull the circuit breaker back in and will all start working again as it should do 👍

He said the 12V battery is charged by the 48V battery through the 48V to 12V step down converter - not the other way around as you suggest (granted he does not have the understanding of the 48V system). But I agree that it would be ridiculous not to have step up charging from an external 12V charger. It would take a while, since using say a 50A 12V charger would only put in about 10A into the 48V battery. The control board should not have to be reset - it should auto reset when it detects the minimum voltage on the battery.

@@einfelder8262 yeah, the ones I have come across this seems to be the procedure, it can take a few tries of asking the 48v system to re-energise using odis, or I would guess vcds also has the capability to re-energise, but that would be my next step to leave the 12v charging or possibly in diag + mode holding the battery voltage at 13.5v or 14.2v for hours to see if it will boost the 48v back into life then try re energise if it doesn’t do it automatically

@@TheUweRoss Thanks for the info. There is still a problem with the whole system, though, in my opinion. In this case, the 48V system charged the 12V system continuously (as it should) BUT it kept going until the 48V was dead. Should have stopped before that happened. Then of course the 12V also drained. Badly programmed BMS or DC-DC shutoff settings?

Before replacing the generator, check the individual cell voltages of the hybrid pack. In Lithium packs when a cell voltage differs more than a determined value from the rest of the cells it cuts off the pack. As it it is charging the 12V system this issue would be remote, but it’s still worth considering. Maybe the company that flashed the control module will have a option on this. As far as charging goes you can slow charge each cell to the specified voltage of that battery chemistry. I would advise to disconnect all bms wires during this process as charging the cells individually will definitely cause voltage irregularities in the cells. Hobby chargers can be useful as they have the ability to cell balance, but you must check that they are compatible with the exact lithium technology in this 48V system and that it can handle ( 48V / 3.2V ) = 15 cells in series (15S) “3.2V being the nominal voltage of lithium iron phosphate batteries, I suspect this is the battery chemistry used in this system”

I'm lucky with my Audi. It's an A8 D3 V8 4.2 petrol. The best thing about it is that it is not FSI. I have driven it for 265,000 km. it does not consume oil the gearbox works the air suspension works, problems are very simple and you can basically do everything yourself cheap and easy way. the car is 20 years old and runs perfectly. What will happen to an Audi like this in 20 years when it is already broken like a nightmare. No stypid 48 volt systems!

When we unplugged that the CAN system came back online and allowed the system to charge, its shorts and drags the CAN system down. I think this is all coincidental for you and the problem existed before. Try this and all the best.

I would have thought that all the modules would still communicate on the can bus even if the 48v wasn't active as each one would also have a 12v feed. Looking at your fault log at 12:03 the slower bus signals like lights and sound system are communicating ok but not the high speed bus for engine and transmission etc . I think something has got damaged and shorted out the can bus. If you have an oscilloscope you could check the communications to verify if they are ok and if not unplug modules on the affected bus to see if it helps. Another channel had a faulty brand new power steering pump which shorted out the can bus whenever they connected it. Until you regain communication it is not worth looking into the 48v side issues.

Second there is an option to re energize charging through the diagnostic but the battery has to be charged (the 48v charger comes handy) . Third the wisest thing would be the car to go to the dealer because like this you are wasting both the money and time of yours AND the owner who probably needs to be awarded the medal of patience..not because you are not good at your job you are excellent but because you don’t take quick decisions. What a crazy headache to have - no wonder it's getting harder to find mechanics these days. If I were thinking in my old school way, I would remove the drive belt from the motor/generator, and hook up another motor with a short belt underneath the car, or even use a drill with a socket fitting, and drive the generator until such time as the 48v battery and 12v batteries are both fully charged. Of course, if no charging occurs, or very little charging, then it's possible the motor/generator is toast. After that, either reconnect the main drive belt and try starting the engine like normal if it did charge up properly, or it might be time to order in a new motor/generator. This is the reason I really wan't to build a mechanical compressed air powered motor, and replace all these hybrid monsters of technology...

it is possible to disconnect the 48v battery and just run the car with the 12V system? I would like to buy a 50 TDI but do not want to mess around with this complicated stuff, just want to drive a v6 TDI without worries. BTW: what is the benefit of the 48V MHEV besides costs and headaches for the owner?

I know this is a bit late for you, but whenever I don’t use a hybrid, it goes on the charger.

Is it! I've just read that it can generate 5 -15kw when operating correctly, that's a phenomenal amount of power 😮

What an absolute joke. Surely Audi can come up with a start stop system that relies only on a 12v battery such as that used by Subaru. This is engineering gone friggen mad.
Midl Hybrid 48V. ¿How does it work?
