To those asking if its illegal to do this the answer is no if they were taking those pennies and defacing them to make them look like say a quarter somehow or a dime or something of Great value with the intent to use them or were melting them down to get the copper with the intent of selling the copper then yes it would be illegal but melting them down to make an art piece such as that sword is not illegal. Your first gut reaction when you read the title would be "Holy cow, that's $1,000 of pennies!" but I would like to further point out that each penny actually costs roughly around 2.72 cents which equates to a material cost of 2,720 dollars instead; HOWEVER ONCE MORE! this is only based on the cost of a penny to be made in 2022, which is both two years old, but also doesn't tell the full story cause pennies have been historically made by multiple different metals with a copper outside through out the years, and they'd probably not even get just the 2022 pennies so the likely hood is that, adjusting for things like inflation of the cost to make pennies and the materials in the pennies and the differing penny materials, it's likely even HIGHER due to the costs of copper alone! The most of the metal bulk is likely Zinc and Copper, so basically a sort of brass-like metal alloy, but there would also be tin, nickel, and, if they got a steel penny, then steel, but steel pennies are very uncommon cause they weren't made for a long time. Ofc, this isn't an exact metallurgic analysis of the blade and every penny they used, this is just me giving a rough estimate, but I'd say 2,750 dollars worth of material is a good rough shot in the dark.

Here's how to not have to go through every single roll of pennies to sort out the copper pennies: Copper pennies are a lot heavier than zinc pennies! 3.11 grams vs 2.5 grams. There are 50 pennies to a roll, making the weight of a whole roll of zink only pennies 125 grams + paper. A roll with a single copper penny weighs 0.61 grams more than one without. With a decently accurate scale that takes, say, 500 grams, you can weigh 3 rolls at once, just do the math for three rolls of zinc only. Bonus: for easy transport back to the bank, you can keep all the zinc only rolls intact. Edit: Decently accurate scale: A resolution of 0.1 grams is perfectly fine! 0.5 grams is pushing it, and I wouldn't trust it. It's too coarse, you may get false positives and loose out on singles.
