The low point were those ticket dispensing machines, you would buy prizes with the tickets. They were 100% predatory toward children. The high point was playing a four player game with three other people; or just playing with one other player. I forgot the name of my favorite game. It was a multi-player shooter where you would kill zombies and stuff. I only saw one of those arcade cabinets at a mall arcade called Alladins Palace. This was the largest arcade in my area. It was a good several hour drive from where I lived. I saw the end of the games of the generation Donkey Kong, Centipede, Pacman, etc. were part of. I got to play the four player games like X-men, The Simpson's, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I never really got into Arcade Fighters that much, though I did play them on occasion. Sometimes you would find someone to play against. I had a handful of times someone payed for my attempt at a game just because they wanted to watch me play. The strangest game I ever played started an artificially intelligence women. I do not even remember much about the game. This would have been in the early to mid 90's to give you some idea of when this strange game was out. I found it oddly enough at a small Arcade which was right next to an indoor Hotel Pool.

This was the high water mark for arcade games. Then PS2 pretty much ended that quick. Great to see one in such nice shape. Amazing that it's been 23 years since it came out.

The number 1 dipswitch on U12 switches to "high res" and there should be a molex on the rear of the chassis to the right with two plus beside each other and that switches the HZ on the chassis from 15hz to 31hz or whatever it is. *Also had to bump the voltage up slightly to the jamma when it was in High Res mode compared to the low res. Wasn't much but .13v increase. These things are power hungry.

I remember the first Gantlet came out. It was like a top down version of a 3d maze like of dungeons and dragons type of game. It's amazing how the game has revision. Scimitar is pronounced simitar. It's like the game that sounds so eerie. I'm sinistar. I live. With that eerie voice I though I was going dirty my short when he spoke and came on the screen in space. Lol

Man, I remember the first time I saw this game, it was at Kings Island amusement park and already a huge fan of gauntlet, thought "The ultimate video game is now here" IF I recall they had theirs set on 50 cents per credit. First time I saw the original Gauntlet was at a roller rink and at first i was thinking "Why are so many people in the arcade?" Then I saw it, and people standing t lest 3-4 deep behind each player position to get on the game.

I spent so much time on the PS2 version - I thought the sound in particular was just great. By chance Barry Leitch(I think it was) saw my comment about it on a forum I visit and appreciated my praise, saying they had put 3x as much work into the sound as a to a comparable game.

I got one years ago and replaced the board with a slightly faster one from...I forget? Also replaced the HDD with a CF card. I have a bunch of spare parts, as well, including a full set of the joysticks and buttons, etc... Love this game so I want to be able to keep up with maintenance when the time comes. These are HEAVY beasts. All that metal on the front, I guess. The progress save mechanic is pretty sweet.

Had that cabinet in a few Rev Share locations that I used to manage years ago. I had a large cargo van and would often swap U/R games when needed. This game was HEAVY!!!! The wood was high quality plywood and not that cheap press crap or thin plywood. Took a few of us to load it into the van. Fun Experience: Had one in a movie theater lobby that lacked working HVAC. Middle of a HOT HUMID day I get a service call that the game is 'hissing'. My boss shows up as well and figures the game is fully nackered. I removed the back and powered it up. The CRT had a light coating of carbon/dust and the humidity was causing a high voltage 'spider web' effect as it was leaking out. 5 minutes later after a full cleaning with Windex? Good as new. Nice game. Wife always joked around "Save Keys to Open {my} Chest".....

By 1999 all the arcades had shut down in my area, so I never got to see this one. The end of the game reminded me of times when I tried to grab another coin from my pocket only to discover I only had notes left, and doing the desperate bolt to the counter to get more coins before the countdown expired!

I was and am so thrilled to see you documenting this game. I don't think I've ever encountered the physical cabinet(s), but played Legends on the N64 which has a similar UI. I really enjoyed the modern PC Gauntlet game by WB Games and they made some good/continued investments in it in subsequent years but my friends lost interest in it pretty quickly, unfortunately. *Edit: Oh, DoubleFine (a game studio with a channel here on KZbin) has a cool mini documentary series on a Gauntlet game/port for the Nintendo DS that was never released despite being largely complete. Fascinating insights from some of the devs.

I have only seen one Gauntlet machine in my area and it was not this specific Gauntlet game. It was in a Bowling Alley Arcade. I spent a few dollars on it. That Arcade was oddly void of anyone else playing on it. That is strange since there were about a dozen Arcade Cabinets.

Sorry to hijack your video, it is awesome. But I just came from The 8-Bit Guy's channel where he was trying to repair a Moon Base cocktail cab, and needs some advice or tips to troubleshoot how to fix it. He found out that there was an inline chip for the vert control that got blown. He replaced it, but minutes after playing it it blew up again. So he needs to know of a way to narrow down the suspects to repair it and get it working again :) I commented so that he can get ahold of you.

I just spent the better part of two weeks fixing a Dark Legacy and finished it a few days ago. Would error out with a "failed to initiate audio" code Swapped PIC, security and u27 and hdd. Pulling my hair out until I noticed all three of the Vegas 777 boards I have wouldn't recognize the number 3 dipswitch on U12. Tested the surface mount 472 resistors coming off U12 away from the Jamma and #4, #3 and #8 dipswitch on U12 were all bad. Swapped em out and works fine now. I hate working on stuff that atari makes.

There's an early 1980s arcade game whose name escapes me. I know it's a dungeon-based game where you go through levels controlling a "round guy" who's armed with bow and arrow. It's controlled by a joystick with a button to fire the arrows. It's not Atari, it's not Gauntlet for sure. It's a simpler probably released between 1982 and 1985. Does anybody know this game? It has a bizarre name or different spelling. I want to say it's "Quest" or something like that but it's not popping up in online searches.
@AvengerII2 жыл бұрын
FOUND IT! The title of the game was "Venture." It was a 1981 arcade game published by Exidy. They're basically defunct although the name and IP/game source code was bought by CollectorVision a few years ago. The name finally came to me when I looked up "Adventure." That's a name of an Atari 2600 game but it bears little resemblance to Venture other than the basic themes. It was kind of a neat little game. I had a game on floppy disk for the Atari 400/800 computers that was a clone of Venture. There were tons of clone games in the 1980s. It took many years, millions of dollars suits, and standards developed by companies AFTER the 1983 videogame crash to get to where we are now. Now, we're in kind of a shitty current-era of videogames. No wonder retrogaming has taken off!!! The industry's been creatively dead after the PS2 era ended...

Hey Ron I have a question more along the lines of pinball machines. If properly executed and paired with the correct game, could someone design and build a scoring display on a pinball machine using Nixie tubes? Mainly I'm thinking about the driver board not interfacing with the Nixies and/or it being too hard to get the correct voltages.

Hey Ron, thanks again for great content. I have a question for you. I hope it's not a dumb one but here goes. Can you take a vector monitor game, let's say Tempest, and install another type monitor. A raster, led, etc. Will the hardware just look for the Vector monitor, or will it play on any type of monitor?
@LyonsArcade2 жыл бұрын
The gameboard in Tempest works in tandem with the monitor to create the vector image, so unfortunately you have to replace it with another Vector monitor (which they stopped making in like 1983)... someone created a Vector to VGA board so you could use a regular monitor, but it's very expensive because it basically has to do a lot of math to create a raster display.... thanks for watching nikitawolf2!
