We are at Shelter Bay Marina, a place that after 7 months of owning Boundless, feels more like a home than most marinas we’ve stayed at. When we flew to Panama to move aboard on June 10th this past year, we thought that after some projects, we would say goodbye to this place, with no idea when or if we would be back because of our plans to take our new boat back to the east coast of the United States, picking up where we left off on Seawind. To our surprise, we have found that mother nature, and a call for new adventure, is ushering us in the complete opposite direction. Not just into a new ocean, but also away from our families, friends, and the comfort of the familiar areas and waters we’ve come to know pretty well over the past few years. But just like our friends and family we love in those familiar areas, Shelter Bay has also become a place filled with people we’ve come to love. We have met people who are now some of our best friends, in a place we never thought we would. That is one thing that slowly cruising around the world has opened my mind to. No matter how foreign a place may feel, there are always good people who end up touching your life in a profound and permanent way. So as Katy and I process the huge decision to transit the Panama Canal, a pretty permanent change in direction, we find ourselves saying goodbye to a place now added to our list of “homes away from home”.
The Panama Canal was officially opened on August 15, 1914, changing the course of global shipping and trade forever. Over 14,000 ships and approximately 2,500 recreational vessels transit the canal each year. And over 1 million since its opening. The Panama Canal plays a vital role in the global economy, with shipping freighters paying a hefty price to utilize its services. On average, it costs around $150,000 to $450,000 for a shipping freighter to pass through the canal, depending on factors such as size and cargo.
In last weeks episode we tackled the last of our major projects, and now we have the formalities of a canal transit to deal with. The Panama Canal is primarily a commercial shipping route, and us small boats are an afterthought, taking up the space in front or behind one of the big freighters.
The trip of a lifetime. Here we go!!

I loved this video. Great shots. I’ve traversed the canal several times but never in a small boat. I never would have thought about the bow wave being an issue. Wow. Thank you

What an exceptional Documentary on the Panama Canal. As a US Merchant Marine my first transit was in 1974 on the American Astronaut a US Lines containership, 628ft long, 84 ft wide and 32ft deep. Being the monsoon season our daylight transit was hampered by a continuous deluge of water. It was an experience and one I'll never forget. We are so Happy for you both, thanking Kattie so much for her continual support of mental health, as our youngest boy, now 40 year old has OCD as well. She's a real trooper, hoping her life aboard does not promulgate her condition. Again, thank you so much for this marvelous episode.

Haha. It is completely normal to be uncomfortable with people on your boat. Your boat is your nest, your crusty bottle, we gypos call it. People are a mixed bag, mostly okay but best at a distance. That is why you have made a sailboat your life. I was actually itching watching those people on your boat! But now, oooh, the wide pacific! Head straight for Fatu Hiva and Hiva Oah. Oh my god you might never leave, pure paradise, but rolley, I hope you have flopperstoppers.

So proud of Katy, am looking forward to seeing her growth after you have circumnavigated! You sir are boss! As you were passing thru the canal there were large “stepped” structures on the bank. Are these the remnants of the construction of the canal, or are they old archeological sites?

the locomotives just keep the ships centered. All movement of the ship through the canal is by that ship's propulsion. Those little locomotives would not have the power to pull that ship. Been through the canal twice. Once on a US Navy vessel and once on a sail boat. We were unfortunately behind a big container ship in the locks on the sailboat transit. When it came time to move to the next lock the prop wash from the ship was brutal. We were rafted with two other sailboats.

Thank you for sharing! The container ship in front of us thankfully was easy on the throttle when they moved ahead. Same with the tugboat. We were all holding our breath when it started moving because we heard horror stories about it!

Since the cutting of SO2 from ship tack emissions Caribbean has had a drought. Cutting SO2 that causes condensation has taken it's toll. Also cutting SO2 means warmer waters as more solar radiation heats the oceans making ocean boiling event. After 1980s, reductions in particulate emissions have also caused a "partial" reversal of the dimming trend, which has sometimes been described as a global brightening aka global warming.
