On this adventure, Regena and I head to Arizona in search of an old abandoned airport and then to Colorado for a multi-day adventure where we will be exploring some amazing trails, checking out some historical sites, climbing high in to the Colorado backcountry mountains, camping and spending a few days at Overland Expo. We traveled in our Jeep Wrangler towing the Patriot Campers trailer and Regena was struggling learning how to back up the trailer, so we spent a little time allowing her to practice…

Trick I learned to backup: grab the steering wheel at the bottom. Now move your hand left to turn the trailer left and right if you want the trailer to turn right. And go slow.

I’m a truck driver with over 20 years experience, and used to train new drivers. If you’re trying to keep the trailer straight behind you use the side mirrors only and turn towards the trailer. Meaning if the trailer is going towards your passenger mirror side, turn towards it (passenger would be 3 o’clock). You have to be fast with a shorter trailer. Also, keep you hand at 12 o’clock and only make quarter turns, meaning from 12 to 3 or 9, then back to 12.

On a short trailer like that if you turn the steering wheel more than a 45 degree angle from the straightforward position, you will be chasing the trailer more.

A confidence builder is to open the rear window and have her look over her shoulder and "follow" the trailer in a big open area. Small steering wheel movements only, aiming for minimal change. Then as above progress to mirrors.

Brad I am going to say since Regina has been joining you I am loving the content even more. Seeing your wife join you and be so involved makes me smile. A good old friend thought me how back trailer. While learning he had me turn in the seat and watch the trailer not the steering wheel. Learn the hand motion of what to do while watching the trailer and not the wheel. That will help you unlearn left and right when once he hand motion is learned use the mirror while keeping the hand motion. But Regina you were still doing great!! Moving backwards and turning backwards is hard to grasp.

When backing up steer towards the problem. If the trailer goes left and you don't want it to go left, turn the wheel left. If it's going right and you don't want it to go right, steer right. Don't over correct. 1/4 turns on the wheel should be a good start for such a short trailer.

The one big difference between her technique in backing up and yours is that she is relying on her mirrors to watch the trailer as opposed to looking backward over her shoulders. Used to be a truck driver and trainer for new hires. Advice to follow. Open area, get vehicle and trailer in straight line to start. Hardest part is stop natural turning instinct. Put hand on bottom of steering wheel. 6 o'clock position. That way if you want trailer to go left just swing steering wheel left. Always make small corrections. Most important part is hand at BOTTOM of steering wheel so your mind doesn't mess with natural feeling good luck Regina. You'll get it

My father and mother taught me how to back trailers starting when I was 14, and if they were around when I was a teenager, they would never stop commenting on my technique. The biggest thing they always said, "make small corrections." Especially with a short tongue to axle trailer, you need to make very small movements in the wheel. The moment you start trying to make big changes you get to a point that the trailer is into an unrecoverable "jack-knife" that you can only fix by pulling far forward. Small corrections!

Two different tips about back up. Tip A - Friend gave me this one is to use a toy semi truck and use that a mental note on what the Tractor is doing with the trailer when the tractor is turned side to side. Tip B - Small movements on the steering wheel. The trailer goes wild side to side when the steering wheel is turned too much. Small movements of the steering wheel keeps the trailer under control much better while back up.

The key for her was putting 1 hand at the bottom of the wheel, then your hand just goes the same direction you want the trailer to move. Way to go Regina!! We have a boat so I understand how hard it is to back up a trailer! I appreciate you also showing us ur shower/bathroom set up.. not many people like to keep it real .. they often just show all the pretty stuff of camping .. not the real day to day set ups .. thanks for keeping it real ..

Trailer backing tip, hold your hand at the 6 o'clock position and point the trailer direction you want to go.

Regena, backing up is difficult for some but one trick that has helped many- put a hand at 6 o’clock on the steering wheel. Keep that hand there and while backing up, if you move that hand left the trailer will go left, move that hand right and the trailer will go right. It simplifies the process and most grasp the concept after 2-3 uses. 👍🏻❤️

Thank you! I've tried that...it just doesn't seem to work for me. But I'm not giving up! Try, try, and try again...one day I'll get it! ☺

Easy tip for backing up a trailer is when you see the trailer in the left mirror you turn the steering wheel to the left. And vice versa when you see it in the right mirror.

congrats on 500k+ subs. easier way to teach backing up trailers ( grab the bottom of the steering from the inside , move to right to back up right and move it left to back up left) top of steering will over correct if not used to it

Regena...old "trailer backer" here gonna tell you how to do it and when you see how simple it is it will blow your mind! Simply place your hand at 6 o'clock on the wheel (for those in Rio Lindo that is bottom center of the steering wheel..LOL) and then move your hand in the direction you want the rear of the trailer to go. Shove your hand to the right, back of the trailer goes to the right. Watch the trailer in your side mirrors...move slowly as you learn and before long you'll be outbacking Brad! You can thank me later.

One simple way to reverse with a trailer, hold your hands at the bottom of the steeringwheel, if you want your trailer to go right, move the steeringwheel right, if you want it to go left, move left, still holding it on the bottom, small movements early instead of big late and off course, go slow.
