So it is not a software lock, it is calibration information. However the phones should continue to show (sombre, not on each boot) that the parts might not be genuine since any fake parts these days all include a cloned SN from a real part so the only way you can have some confidence the parts are legit is to check service history of the device. Having a way to know if the parts are legit is very important for the resale market, it should be easy for people buying second hand phones to know if they have a ligit phone or not so that they can consider the price they are paying.

Apple likes to keep a tight circle. They will NEVER encourage repairs that are not sponsored by them. They likely did this redesign to prepare for upcoming repairability laws as well as help those partaking in their self-repair program. Now they can say they’ve provided parts, tools, manuals, and a phone that’s somewhat way to repair to the consumer; and wipe their hands clean. It’d be hard to write a repair law that made software locks illegal. And Apple probably knows that. Mark my words, the more repairable Apple products get, the more software restrictions will be in place. Apple isn’t going to give up their control that easy.

Be realistic. Apple's main reason for improving repairability on its iPhones was due to the recent push for a right-to-repair bill and the EU's surmounting pressures with antitrust laws. Without laws in place to keep them in check, there's no way Apple wouldn't capitalize on charging consumers exorbitant repairs using first-party parts as they have done in the past. Why would they advertise repairability as one of their unique selling points when they can just sell you a new one? To add, most non-tech savvy consumers do not care about repairability at all when they don't have the adequate knowledge to fix them nor do they want to deal with the hassle of fixing it themselves. There's no benefit to Apple's profit margins at all so why would they even bother? Apple didn't become a trellis company by being generous. They did so by selling you a $30 "polishing" cloth, $699 "wheels" and a $999 "pro" stand. If you think Apple is getting better, you need to reevaluate again.

With the move to USB-C, along with the EU discussions around battery replacements and parts availability for upwards of seven years, Apple has to start thinking about these things. Seeing as their phone designs are largely standardized for many years, they are in a prime position to offer an easily repairable iPhone redesign that improves on the score of seven for the iPhone 14. Framework proves that modularity can also be an attractive design decision, and that's something that Apple could offer as well.

I really don't understand how they're coming to their reparability score for this, especially when they rate Samsung's galaxy line of devices much lower. Replacing displays on those devices is extremely easy, not only that but you can literally build a galaxy phone from a box of parts, put in a logic board from a donor device and it'll work perfectly fine with no software locks. You can do it all in less than 10 minutes with one screwdriver (sometimes two because some use tri wing bits on a couple of components), and you never have to go hat in hand begging Samsung for permission to make it work again. It's nice to see Apple making some steps towards easier repair, but locking every major component behind a software gate negates all "reparability" improvements made to the design. It's a bit like sending a steak back to the kitchen because it's undercooked, and then getting the same raw steak brought back but with some extra seasoning added on. They made it easier to replace unusable parts unless you go directly to them and pay a premium, 7/10

if you undo your own misstep without taking a step back you are taking a step in the right direction
@dom_the31662 жыл бұрын
@@UKfromadrone I agree, by saying that they're only just starting to undo their missteps I was referring to the fact that apple are still using software locks on their hardware to prevent the replacement of parts.
@hishnash2 жыл бұрын
I don't think they have every made a phone you can open from both sides, and in fact that might well be the only phone on the market from any vendor that does this. In design this is rather innovative.

2:16 "... and unlike an android, you can still replace the screen with ease." I will admit that apple really did make a huge step in the right direction making the screen easy to replace like this, but the idea of a mid frame and access to just the screen connectors under the screen is identical to the google pixel phones. Its just the galaxy phones that require you to disassemble a chunk of the phone to get the screen off. I really hope Samsung decides to make screen repairs just as easy as the pixels and the iphone 14 going forward and I really hope apple is finally making the moves towards being pro right to repair.

Does iPhone 14 use older generation hardware compared to the Pro models? Apart from the camera and display, is the rest of the hardware same? Please share some insights.

I think we should be testing more companies on the software lock. My OnePlus 8 Pro screen repair required a calibration tool in order to restore the function of the fingerprint scanner which only OnePlus has it.
@hishnash2 жыл бұрын
So needing calibration is not a software lock. whenever you have a mass produced sensor you need to expect that if you pick 2 sensors from a pile they will output different values for the same input, this is just how electronic sensors (be that light, fingerprint, cameras, temp, etc work) you alway need to calibrate each and every sensor. The choice you then have is how do you provide this calibration info. 1) you embed a micro controler on the sensor and put the calibration info within the controler (this draws extra power, space and costs $) 2) you embed a small memory unit on the sensor that stores the calibration info and expose enough data bandwidth/protocol for the main SOC to read this 3) you put a small SN on the sensor that the SOC can read and you upload the calibration info to a server and the SOC can then pull this info from the server in digantocis mode or be connected to another machine that pulls it and then flashes it to the SOC. Option 3 makes the most senesce for a phone where you have limited space and power budget. Needing to calibrate a sensor, display etc is a good thing!

The score is too high especially with the pairing part thing. What's the point of replacing a part on this phone if you gonna lose a ton of other features

So what does it mean and involve regarding "the back glass needs activation after reinstallation" ??
@jamaalrashid2 жыл бұрын
This doesn't really mean the repair ability score should go up. If there are software locks on components like the back glass that means customers that purchased the phone expect it to be repaired back to standards. I probably missed this in the video but what exactly is that flex that connects the back glass to the board ? Can you move it to the new back glass panel? Thanks for your hard work iFixit. Great video

the software lock is not an issue if you buy the parts from Apple and use their repair kit, only for non genuine knockoff parts
@twopercentgaming46302 жыл бұрын
@@jbutler It still is an issue with genuine parts, as the logic board is paired with some parts. Switching parts between two identical phones doesn't work, for example.

If apple have lock all components using it's own firmware it isn't that repairable really for average person they still can't replace anything. Just making it easier/faster for only apple engineers to repair their own phones at massive cost.
