Blimey Tom, I think you deffo had sunstroke with that full on lobster🦞 tan. Glad the beer made it better! I went to one of those festivals and you could buy a t-shirt that had braces/waist coat etc printed on so you blended in. I remember being very tired and emotional at the end of the day 😂🍺🍻

Geddon you Beauts! Hella time - cracking to see other cultures celebrating the welcoming in of summer. Beautiful. I reckon the cockroaches you saw going around and about the place, were probably cockchafers - very benign May Bugs. I must admit I have never seen so many in all the world as I have in Austria after dark. Anyway, cockchafer is a much more amusing a friendly name 🙂 Take it easy yo! Cheers!

We were in Northern Sweden in summer and doing our laundry at 11pm and it was still daylight. Brilliant wasn't it. We were there on 1 May and stayed on the campsite longer so we could join in the celebrations. Those campsites were beautiful.

Really nice to see you enjoyed it in Austria. When I was a kid, I went very often camping to Wolfgangsee with my parents. As a kid I might not have enjoyed it there as I should have. The cash thing is really annoying for me as an Austrian as well. For all these festivities on the countryside you always need cash with you. Things got really expensive in the last years, the "Laugenstangerl" (same dough as for the Bretzel) for 1,7€ is actually not that bad for a local backery :D

Man I love this style of travel where you do a little planning but then kinda just take things as they come! Get yourself largest preferably black umbrella. You can use it as walking stick, plus it provides you with shade from the sun. Keeps you dry in the rain, shields you from the wind.

Almdudler!!! Made from herbs? Not half bad. Coffee and cake would be the thing to do in Austria. The best in Europe. An Alm is the summer farm up on the mountain where you drive the cows for forage.

It feels a bit like stepping back in time to see how patient people are when it takes all day to carefully raise a maypole and most people are in their national dress. That guy who climbed the maypole - wow ! It’s very interesting Tom that you mentioned how pure a beer has to be in Austria (& Germany? ) and that neither of you felt unwell the following day. Maybe the beer was made to be tasty & refreshing in times gone by and wasn’t brewed simply to get you drunk and they have held on to that purer type of drink. Maybe I am idealizing it a bit, just a thought.

If you go to Switzerland it makes Austria look cheap. Big advantage of Switzerland is public transport is superb. All runs on time to the second. Austria is number one for cakes

Wolfgangssee means Wolfgangs Lake. "See" (pronounced "zay" in German means lake! And the sea in German is das Meer. (pronounced "mare" like the horse) .

You seemed a little surprised that Austria was that much more expensive - it's been like that for years (I was a backpacker back in the, er, early 90s and spent more in 3 days in Salzburg and Vienna than 10 days in Budapest and Prague). That said, glad you found some Australians in Saltzburg - that too was my experience and it was one of the most drunken nights of my life. I love your lifestyle!

I don't know about the lakesode pitch, but I live in the south and highly reccomend the Pyramidenkogl observation tower near Klagenfurt and the "Goldenes Dachl" in Insbruck. If you want to go swiming in a big lake, I reccomend the Ossiachersee and Wörthersee. If you want to camp or swim by the river side, there are some very nice spots along the Drau river. For small lakes I highly reccomend the Vassachersee (it can get a bit full tjere tho). For hiking I cant reccomend Dobratsch enough. There is a gravel road up for easy walking, there is a parking space near the top, but you can walk up from the bottom. For experienced hikers I reccomend the Jägersteig (also Dobratsch, different rute) for a cliffside walk with BEAUTIFUL view. Dobratsch is also not very turisty and there is a small restaurant at the summit where you can enjoy local specialties with an absolutly gorgeous backdrop of the alpes. Gerlitzen is also a popular destenation, but unlike Dobratsch isnt free unless you walk up from the bottom and is very turisty

Only in a campsite, unfortunately. It is very illegal to do otherwise. Huge fines.

Agreed, what I read online it sounds like you have to use camp sites. If you get caught wild camping in a protected area the fines are as high as €14,000!!!
