A couple simple Items In your first aid kit could be all the difference. Taking some proper steps In your action plan in case of a wound in your chickens, could save their life. Chickens are cannabalistic by nature and love the color red and blood. If they see a wound they cant stop themselves, so all action to isolate the chicken in a hospital environment to help them heal safely and without stress. Here are all the steps we take on our farm.

A few months ago, my Sunny, golden sex link hen, was injured when she tangled herself and her saddle in some weeds/thorns. She hurt her wing and leg after struggling and luckily I found her when she wasn’t roosting at tuck in time that night. I stabilized her wing with self sticking wrap and made a little harness out of a fabric quarter. I suspended it inside a cooler so she kept weight off her leg. She slept in the house next to the brooder box with the new chicks and tested how well she could move each day. Finally she was able to walk carefully with a limp, so I put her and the new chicks together in the small enclosed coop outside with a little run of their own. She seemed to enjoy watching the chicks and it kept her safe from the other adult chickens until she was back to full strength after several weeks. It’s been over three months and she has almost no limp anymore and can balance just fine!

One of my 3 month old pullets had been scalped by one of the older hens (I'd guess) but she was still walking around in the yard with all the others like nothing happened. It was about a nickel-size. We saw it pretty quickly. Separated her and brought her into the mudroom in a cage and did a lot of Googling. Managed to find a suggestion to use a non-sting liquid bandage. I did that the morning after since I wanted to just leave the wound alone at first after just cleaning it off with some filtered water. The liquid bandage worked great to keep the occasional fly off. She was inside but it's fly season. I was more worried about flies at this point. As it wore off, I used some polysporin every couple of days. It scabbed well in one week and I sent her out with the others. Never had any problem with pecking her or flies or ants or anything. I did buy some Hen Healer which has blue dye in it, but never had to use it. We do now have a good chicken first aid tub though. SO important to have good first aid kit handy.
