In Kokelv, that reminds me of my grandparents, they lived in Havøysund, and we (5 kids! I am the eldest.) visited during the summer. We went fishing with our father during the night, and back to grandma making fishcakes, being sooooo tired, but had to do it while fresh. My best memories, was with grandma, sitting by the kitchen table, just her and me, she made it special, put on a tablecloth, the best china, and learned me about drinking coffee, and was allowed to take 2-3 sugarcubes for the coffee. A happy time! ❤ We played by the waterfront, no adult supervision, no lifejackets... it was at the end of the 60's and early 70's... Not like today! 😂

@@tilldaling 😁 Supervision? 🤣🤣🤣 Nah, the moment we were out of the door.... We turned into WILD THINGS!!!! I used to borrow (read: stealing!) my granddads big bicycle, where I had to twist my body so I could use it, to bike in an angle all the time. 😁 This was how I learned to bike... My friends during the summer, we ran EVERYWHERE! Learned to row a boat, and the currents we had to row was sometimes very strong, but we enjoyed it, the only time we went indoors, was to eat, before we was back out again, it did not matter where we ate, at my grandma or at my friends mums, everyone fed us. 😀 It is sad, but we never had any contact during the other seasons, still, I remember those summers very fondly! Now, I am a grandma to 2 boys, and they will not experience that freedom I had, everything they do is so restricted, everything is planned ahead, they have schedules for everything! It is citylife (Trondheim)! Used to have a cottage on a small island at Hitra, and when my kids was small, they had to have a safety-west before I allowed them out of the door. My son learned to row a boat, and also fish... they was not interested in gutting the fish... 🤣🤣🤣 Loved the time when we had that cottage.

Watching the landscape drift by on your drive to the north, I was reminded of the eternal horizons and distant blue mountains in enormous stretches of Western Canada and America. One can drive for days, mstill, and pass only small towns that are hours apart. It's great to know there are regions of our planet that still look and sound empty, though not missing birdsong or the breeze through pine trees, just empty of industry, human mercantilism and sprawling, ugly development. Earth is not over yet! She still has some of her youthful complexion--if only we conserve these special, remote places around her azure, arcuate horizons.

You mentioned the effect of WW II on the local people. As an American whose father and uncles fought in the War, I have always been very proud of the Norwegian Resistance. It was for many people a shining moment of heroism in Norway's history. Someday I will visit!

Some of us who have worked and had a close relationships with our Russian neighbours for many years are ambivalent towards the current situation with Russia and Ukraine. It is not easy and it is not given that our NATO membership helps on deescalating any possible conflict. I hate it. The "Big guys" must resolve this, and the solution is ONLY diplomatic, nothing else. And that includes Ukraine abandon their "road to membership".

@@natantataii8195 Uh, I didn't say anything about Russians, who, if you will remember, fought with the Allies against Hitler's various occupations. Unfortunately, Russia is now clearly an aggressor nation, both externally and toward its own citizens! I believe Norway realizes that, whether or not NATO is part of the discussion.

Excellent work Till! You put words on what many people feels and thinks about life in the north and generally. Kokelv have (no surprise) a very special place in my heart. I'll be happy to contribute in a "winter edition" 😊 -Nils Jørgen P. (son of Reidar who grew up on that farm)

We grew up eating baccala. My father's from southern Italy so my northern Italian mother (who couldn't stomach it) would make it. As you demonstrated, it's a big production. It starts off fishy, but soaked and made well, it's not at all fishy. Mom would add tomato sauce, black olives. It's the ONLY fish dish I can eat w/tomato sauce (well, other than clams....).

It's a great dish to me and I'm glad you have one fish dish that you enjoy at least! :)

I remember one summer me and my family were going up to a little valley about an hour from Alta to stay at my grandma and grandpa's house who lived next to my cousins on a little farm. One day me and my grandma decided to go on a little hike up one of the surrounding mountains way past my bedtime at that time (I was only 6 or 7 years old at that time). We got to see the most beautiful sun i had ever seen just hanging there on the horizon looking over the valley. It was like a Deity protecting the land from the darkness. (And on that hike i found a nice round rock so that was fun).

Indeed very nice, and good memories. (Sorry English not first language) I spend some time in Porsanger myself for some years before going to America. Love it there. I did enjoy the peace and ease. I eventually wanted things faster and in America it was the speed I needed career-wise. In the south-west, Arizona specific. Also very beautiful and special in the desert. All of said now, I realized over the years that these oasis only exist in the world due to the immense sacrifice of industrialized militarized nations like America and the UK. I fear that if many of these powerful countries turn inward, Europe could fall to bad actors from the East. Cheers.
