I feel so bad for that zebra. They really aren't anything like horses behaviorally and they aren't domesticated, so there is almost no chance that anyone attending a horse auction (especially a lower end one) would have the skills or knowledge to give this animal what they need. :(

Due to their attractive skin pattern and color, and their rarity in everyday life, they are viewed as trophies and prizes for hunters here in the United States. Lodges are profiting thousands of dollars in order to allow a hunter to kill and keep a memento of a zebra whose life is cut short. Some zebras (because of illness, disability) end up in auctions or kill pens.

My heart goes out to the well used not so great care Belgians that come off the Amish farms. So many have huge issues because they did not get the proper attention. Pony Tales Rescue & Refuge has a channel and they are rescuing a bunch of there Belgians and Percheron . The ladies that run that rescue have lots of experience and patience and compassion for the horses they rescue. Check out their channel if you want to see a crazy but determined farrier that literally puts his life on the line with the big drafts they are rescuing that know nada about being in the stocks, or having any sort of regular hoof care. He helps so many that have neglect hoofs that mostly would end up in the slaughter truck as the kill buyers love the big drafts as they get paid by the pound at these awful slaughter places. I try to donate to Pony Tales as much as possible, they never turn ANY horse away and they do all they possibly can with their two vets and their farrier to give these precious animals a chance at life. I did not think that they would be able to adopt out so many drafts, but they have proven me wrong.

I want to tell you a cautionary tale about my experience buying an auction horse. I saw a gorgeous 6-year-old appy at an auction and looked him over really good., Nice, sound, young horse. The seller wanted a bit more than I was willing to pay but we decided if he didn't sell at auction that he and I would work something out for me to buy him. He didn't sell and the seller, who knew where I was living in the middle of a Mennonite community, showed up with the horse. He didn't sell, we agreed on a price and I was the proud owner of a gorgeous 6-year-old appy gelding name Comanche. BUT... What I didn't know was the state law. IN Missouri, where I lived at the time, a legal bill of sale has to describe the horse well enough that you can pick it out of a herd by reading the description. Now, Doug.. the man who sold me the horse knew this. He counted on me not knowing the law. 3 Months after I bought my horse, Doug came one day while I was at work and took him. That's when the sheriff informed me that my bill of sale wasn't legal and there was nothing he or I could do. And I wasn't the first-person Doug had done this too. I was out $1500, my horse, everything... And no recourse at all. Consider pinning this as a warning to other new buyers. Sometimes knowing about the seller can be as important as the horse. Or know the law!

Yes Shae got a beautiful baby out of her (Ezzy) but Belle unfortunately has Shivers, and will simply be a pasture pet for the rest of her life 😢 Shae spent A LOT of $$ on a pasture pet. Now thank God Shae took the chance on Belle and not someone else, because a lot of people would have just taken her to another auction, to try and recoup their money or worse.....continued to ride her until she completely foundered 😢. I can really commiserate. My Dad sold my mare by private sale and it just about killed me at my tender age of 14. The next time I heard about my girl, 6 months later she was dead from pneumonia. I went silent for 8 or 10 days and just stayed home in bed. I do not know how my parents finally found out about her dying, but they did. They tried to talk to me about why they sold her and I just stopped them. I said They as good as killed her and I NEVER WANTED TO MENTION HER AGAIN. On my Dads death bed we talked and he wept and said the stupidest thing he ever did was sell her and hurt me.

I used to have a little livestock auction in Oregon that I would go to every couple of months and rescue.. My best rescue was a beautiful little bay stallion.. bigger that a shetland but not quite as refined as a welsh. He came in squealing and striking out so I was able to get him very cheap. Got him loaded and took him home... He struck at me one time but I happened to have a little pear switch and I smacked him on his leg and he never stuck out again. I messed with him a lot.. he was a beautiful blood bay..very classy and just out of curiosity I tried him under harness with the pony cart and he knew EVERYTHING!! He could side pass to turn the cart.. walk, trot, a bit of a canter around the pasture and I was even able to use him to go to my daughters school to pick her up. He was just a perfect little pony stallion. I was able to advertise him with lots of pluses and no negatives and found him a great home. Rescuing was so much fun and work. Keep up the good work =))

One horse at a time to integrate with your geldings or mares you already have is a good plan. Those stout chunky horses appear solid but, like Mushu, you have to think about wrapping your legs around their round bodies which, like you say, makes them rider-specific and down the road narrows the buying field. Yes, a lot to consider given your mission and your circumstances. Thanks for taking us along and for the education on auction horses. ❤️

Thanks for taking us along on this auction weekend. As a Fjord owner since 1988 I am surprised & saddened to see Fjord’s end up in auction. Competing in carriage driving we often competed against Haflingers, which are another rare pony breed. I find it hard to believe that either end up on the auction line. As Kyle mentioned, for many of these horses their lives are spent going auction to auction, sadly some will end up eventually on the slaughter pipeline to Mexico. People think it would be great to own a horse, but have no comprehension of all of the costs that go along with it. If you don’t have your own farm, boarding is an option, but that can be terribly expensive. Most boarding stables, at least in my area, require you to participate in their lesson program, that is over the cost of boarding. Boarding often is not a flat fee. Turnout, holding for vet, farrier, tack storage, that’s extra. Some have restrictions on when you’re allowed on the property, when you can move your horse from pasture to barn, some handle all feeding, don’t give your horse that extra hay. I boarded when I first started, fortunately I had great folks I trusted. Once we got our own farm I did have boarders and 2 yrs ago I asked the last boarder to leave. There were multiple issues and it just wasn’t worth the liability of having the horse here. It is a huge decision to purchase a horse, but that is just the start of a very long list of expenses that you will find along the trail. Again, thanks for sharing the auction experience with us!

I think for the most part, draft horse owners tend to let the hooves go long because there seem to be fewer farriers willing to work on drafts. And the Amish/Mennonite tend to let their drafts go really long, I think, so they can 'dig in' when pulling equipment. That, or they simply stop caring once the horse is scheduled for sale - it wouldn't surprise me.

I myself, on the other hand, have always had a dream to have a horse rescue, but not a a 501c3 or donation funded program. My desire has always been to take on every horse that is not wanted, to provide them with a retirement home to live out their lives without the fear of ever being mistreated, starved, unloved or unwanted again.Though I have tried, I was not able to fulfill that dream. I enjoy your videos so very much. They’re always the ones I look forward to the most!!❤

Another enjoyable experience, however, a couple of horses looked so forlorn ,that I ended up on a sad note... It is so heart wrenching to see horses that haven't had the proper maintenance for their feet; it is such a big part of their ability to meet expectations as well as avoid injuries and or pain. Then there was one horse that looked so dirty; it was obvious that his owner had no use for him any more and begrudged him any time or care. Fortunately , I am not at the auction in person or it would definitely turn me into a horse advocate if not an all out activist. I admire how balanced your approach is, Shea, it is for the best. You are also fortunate to have Kyle to bounce thoughts off of. Kyle in an additional guard rail in your decision making. As always, I'm sending well wishes your way.

This sale pulled a bit more at my heart strings. Especially the big Percheron that was so kind. At every sale - but especially at the lower end sales - the fate of the horses are unsure. I am just thinking about the big guy and really hope he found a good home! You will find a great fitting horse for you, Kyle and your program 🙏🏼 With all of your experience it would be amazing if you could take on regularly some rescue horses in the future. 😊

@@orcaalley2170 Some of them might go to slaughter, yes. The Percheron pulled at my heart strings - I can only imagine how it must have been for Shae and Kyle being there and experiencing it all! It’s just that nobody can save every horse/equine. And like Shae often explains - you have to know your limits. Even if it might be really challenging in the situation…

That auction house that Horse Plus has traditionally gone to monthly is some level of hell. I’m glad HP found the way to circumvent the auction house. Still horrified at the conditions of the arrivals stumbling off those large trailers. HP made a “leak” in the slaughter pipeline. Animal welfare laws need to change and I’m glad they are working on that too.

I loved the last bay mare, but she was forward for a lesson horse. The big dapple gray was pretty, but I didn't like his long back/weak loin look. I can also see that his front leg movement was short. Nothing wrong with being picky - you need what you need for your business!

Yes! Some breeds are commanding high sale prices due to their popularity and novelty, For example, I would place Gypsy Vanners in this category. Time will tell if they maintain their current popularity and market value. The prices buyers are paying for auction horses are shocking to me; a private sale with a vetted horse is one thing, but an auction horse that sells for 5 figures!

Hi Shae, Subscriber here. Love following you. I think items offered in your boutique line up are wonderful. I have a request and you are “the one” I believe who could do justice to the practical and artistic design of timeless , vintage style western wear. Tailored, mostly cotton, shirts, blouses, skirts, riding skirts. Not overly fancy and tacky like the ones you can find, but tasteful. Have you ever looked online in search of a flannel western shirt with pearl snap buttons, or a well designed blouse? Not easy to find. I’ve seen enough of your videos ( probably all of them :-) to know that you are a fashionable down to earth lady with a great sense of style and if anyone could pull off a line of beautiful western wear, it would be you. Sincerely, Barbara

I was struck by your statement " I am doing MY part". I have had to learn that as being a caregiver for the elderly for over 20 years. Knowing I am chosen by Jesus to do MY part for those he sends me to. I cant help everyone but am selected to go to those that I am equipped to serve with all that I am.

Thank you for being a caregiver to the elderly. There are so few who are good at that job. We are all going to be aged unless we die in a accident or something. It is hard to care for the elderly and it takes a specific kind of person to gain their trust and enjoy seeing them come to care for them.
