A healthy dose of PB-40 ;) . . . I'm a lifetime Ford guy who's recently become interested in AMC and Dodge Magnum V8's , but, I'm starting to see the appeal of those LS engines. Very DIY friendly. Maybe an LS actually would be the right choice for my Jeep WJ project. Interesting. Very informative, and greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I had a machine shop put valve guides in a shovelhead. They didn't stay in. But sence i has it done at a Machine shop because i wasn't sure of myself. I like to never figured ot out. Thought the electronic ignition had gone bad, Put points back on it. Set, reset, set, reset timing. Bought another bike put twenty thousand miles on it. In a Couple of years, then that winter Took it all apart. SON OF A ..... thats what it was the hole time! Had larson of KC MO Redo them for me and Dremble the After market chrome boxes to fit my Spring choice. Presto second kick. Wow black betty" bam a lamb🎶

Yes, the press fit is critical, most of the shovel head guides I've done had a flange so they couldn't move.

Love your no-nonsense approach/attitude. Wondrful videos, look forward to every new one! Two questins, what are you usiing for your press fit lubricant, and is it ever okay to use Sunnen/Goodson style reamers on cast guides?

Sbi has good guides, if I use bronze I normally get them from SI, sometimes sbi
@alro24345 ай бұрын
I'd drive'em out the same direction you drove them in! Out through the port, in thru the top. There's always a ridge of carbon on the guide in the exhaust's pocket, and even intakes have it too sometimes.

Watched a vid of a guy that wiped out a flat tappet cam on break in on a 304 AMC. He claims there’s no coil bind etc. Q. How much would he have in a solid or hydraulic roller for that motor vs tappet?

On a typical LS iron guide, do you do any finish machine work, or usually are they close enough as is?

Do all engines use a "sleeve" like this & when is it recommenced to change them? If they aren't expensive I'd think you'd want to go ahead whenever you change the valves but I really have no idea - interesting video , ty much

Aluminum heads have insert guides, iron head's have integral guides

What is the advantage to bronze guides? I have them in a Toyota 22R with .50 lift and double valve springs...only lasted 50,000 miles...I imagen double valve springs add to wear???? Would like to go back to OEM iron guides but head builder states ya cant with the .50 lift cam but with .440 lift I can use iron and single springs??? Want to keep the double springs....but would like a bit more longevity

On my Falconer V-12 head going on my Chevy inline 6 292 I ordered it unassembled so I could do some polishing on it. I noticed the valves don't fit in the guides. Does this mean they need to be honed? They appear to be bronze. I didn't try real hard. This head was $6K. Thank you for your time.

Yeah and after there sized the seats will need to be cut also

Before going after it with a hone. Do As Powell demonstrated. Measure valve stem diameter to verify correct valve size. Measure valve guide Inside diameter with a tool such as Mitutoyo 526-123 or similar to verify the actual guide inside diameter and also to verify is guide is straight. If a guide is bell shaped or tapered it should be replaced. This will give you any idea of you can hone the guide or if you need to go down the road of reaming or replacement.

Don't know if it matters, but you didn't spray the last 3 guides with lube before you air hammered them in. Is it something us novices should do?

I noticed that too. Figured he probably had enough on his fingers that he didn't need to spray any more.

They were all going in easily, the lube would be for if they are super tight to stop them galling up.

@@powellmachineinc3179ok SC. I watched some more of your videos. I'm in 'the UK' and have just bent a valve in my Vivaro van (you probably won't know what that is). Anyway I've got the head off, bought the valve spring compressor clamp and removed the bent valve but I've noticed the valve guide is an oval shape at the end. I assume I should replace it. Watched this video then watched another and he's panicking that he's demonstrated doing it with a hammer and saying that it's wrong and they must be pressed out at a machine shop. So now I'm confused as to whether I can do this with a punch and hammer and whether that's going to damage the head. Also not sure how far to knock it back in
@powellmachineinc317910 күн бұрын
@@erdemir5641 So, we do it with a hammer but we have a valve guide driver that actually fits the guide ID and OD, so its not just a "punch"

@@powellmachineinc3179if the valve guide has an oval shape ID at the end would you replace it? It's just an old banger work van not a race car
