No I wouldn't give them their money back either! I rebuilt an engine for a guy and explained to him the break in procedure. He came back after some months, saying the engine wasn't running right. So I tore it down and the lobes were wore off of the cam. The oil was black and full of gritty metal particles. I ask the customer when or if he had recently changed the oil? He said it wasn't necessary because it didn't have enough miles on it yet. Needless to say, he didn't follow the steps to break in the engine right. Even though I explained it to him in depth! I can tell you without a doubt the customer isn't always right!

Just curious, did you just machine the heads? Did you surface the heads? How much material was taken off head surface "overall", the deck hight? If you didnt do the whole motor, he cant put it on you, many variables , and who knows if he actually had a compression issue?

I had an issue with a valve job someone did for me. As the engine would run and when it came down to an idle it would shake and shutter, then die! Checked everything and after some time found the exhaust valves were hanging open. After some time they would close, as the lifter bled down. Checked the preload on the lifters, they were all okay. I ended up replacing all the exhaust valve springs with new. Long story short, the guy who did the valve job, never checked the old springs for proper tension! ..... he phucked up!

He had a valve lash issue! Not a valve job issue! Bad lifter or a preload issue. Either way, it's the engine assemblers problem!

How much compression does the valve have to hold and is it possible to simulate that compression but using smoke so you can see if it holds the smoke? I saw the mineral spirits test which was good but I did think well that test has zero pressure too so it doesn’t simulate real world accurately. I’m not challenging your experience and expertise and might be off base here but wouldn’t a test using compression be more accurate? Maybe there’s no way to test it like that tho

Thanks for these style videos. I was always taught that you can’t read our plugs properly/accurately due to the idle circuit. Especially on the 604. The only way for us to properly read the plugs is to the kill the motor at the end of the lap and roll onto the pits in neutral. You also need to put the new ones in while the engine was hot especially if plan on testing and reading them after the run. I was also under the impression by most data and independent builders recommendations is that the NGK was superior for the 604 application. You are right though I’ve never seen anyone running a 604 or circle track carb without the multiple adjustable emulsion bleeds or tapped and modified blocks. But that’s won’t dirt track guys and rules. VDL is a good. Arb but they aren’t as notable in the dirt scene these days.

The Idle circuit is not specific to a 604, so that makes no sense

Can you replay how you properly set the idle mix screws without a a vacuum gauge . All the “tutorials” and literature say to put a vacuum gauge on. As you know most of us racers don’t even have a vacuum port to access for a gauge.

I knew a guy that put those 100% seals used on over head cam engines on his small block Chevy, as is becoming more common practice these days. He had heads that had just been fully overhauled, including new valve guides. The engine lasted a week and a half before it was coughing, sputtering and backfiring. He pulled the heads off and took them apart. The guides were so warn you could throw the valves in from 20 feet away. The valves and seats were mashed too. All in about 10-12 days. Those 100%valve seals that press on to the guide and have a spring around the stem are not for push rod V8s. I do not understand why people use them. They are trying to fix a problem that does not exist. Maybe they think they look cool? They have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the engine is lubricated and how it works. As with many engine features.

Interesting on the intakes being difficult or weird to get to work right with a carb. My particular project right now involves the Dodge 440 Six Pack and the non-factory intakes, Edelbrock STR and the Weiand Six Pack intake. Both, particularly the Weiand, are what is recommended for the SS Dodge Six Pack cars. But the issue is the outboard 2300 on the Six Pack do not have accel pumps. Metering plates not blocks. This makes the single planes difficult to tune. I am in the process of creating the old Direct Connection Mechanical Six Pack that used to be sold. Instead of the center hung float bowl you have to run the side hung to get outboards with accel pumps. Apparently it's as simple as changing out the center hung for a side hung bowl to fit a 2300 with a metering block on the intake. My question is I am wondering if I want to use the Keith Dorton 2300 with the adj air bleed to add tuneability.

So I started not knowing what a torque plate is and now I’m confused as to which engines are fine to hone and build at home and which ones aren’t and why that is. Too many to really know where to start or how to articulate them in the fewest follow up questions.

Great timing Daniel, just two weeks ago when we took my buddies LS2 C6 vette into the tuner after doing, Heads, Cam, Exhaust and other little thing. I was talking to the tuner about my 306 sbf build, (still having a heck of a go round with the machine shop, eager to put your custom cam to work) about does he tune/dyno Carb cars, he does but suggested I look in Sniper2 or Aces Killshot. I have and certainly there are upsides, there are downsides as well, namely reliability. For now, I'm planning stick with a Carb for my project.... Road Race toy.

My thoughts on finish is that it needs to be slick but be able to hold an oil film so that it remains lubricated. If there's not enough texture for the oil to hold to I feel it would ruin the surface. I've been an automotive mechanic more than 40 years. I've worked the past 10 years as a Harley Davidson technician and lack of lubrication is a death sentence for an engine or transmission. BTW, i appreciate you sharing your knowledge with others. I try to pass on the particular skills I've acquired over a lifetime of turning wrenches. My life would have been for nothing if I dont leave what I've learned with someone else to continue using it when I'm done. Thanks for what you. do

The only other possibility is that the valve was hanging up in the guide causing it not the seat properly but I think your explanation is probably the correct one that the lifter was holding the valve open just enough to cause leakage into the intake

finally some that is gonna tell how you can tune the fuel curve with emulsions i have a ford 331 stroker with 10.5 compression and 230/230 at 50 cam with dual plane intake and quickfuek brawler 650 double pumper and i can get my half throtlle fuel curve flat (only primaries open or if secondaries connected half throtlle before secondaries open is primaries 80 percent open. when i full throtlle with secondaries open my fuel cirve starts at 10afr and goers to 13.0 at 3500 rpm to 6000 rms i cant change the emulsion jets but i tried to play with bigger high speed air bleeds and so bigger secondary jets and no luck so i tried to smaller high speed air bleeds with smaller secondary jets but cant get it flat . can yo usell me metering blocks with removable emulsions jets? or can i just drill the emulsion jets bigger? i have 3 emulsion holes. half throtlle datalog thecarbcheater.com/?startTime=5&endTime=13&db=hnw9d (primaries 80 percent open) full throtlle and secondaries 100 percent open thecarbcheater.com/?startTime=9&endTime=14&db=ViUiK thanks for helping

Back in the day , well before any of us regular guys knew anything about wide band sensors ...we guessed . It was guess ...then test ..then do some more guessing until we thought we had it right . For us guys with old cars , the cost of installing 8 sensors is cost prohibitive , if not entirely out of reach . However , in my mind , installing 8 sensors and buying software to support them , is the only way to actually know . Are we dead lean in one hole and fat in four others ? A guy cant tell without the hardware and a way to read it . I only watch a couple of car channels , you and Brand Racing engines always teach me something . Thanks for the hard work .
