Welcome to the UK! We dont call it caravaning, unless you are towing a caravan (trailer). We just call it camping. And your rig would be referred to as a motorhome, or a campervan. We havent called tgem motorcaravans since around 1950!!! So thrilled you are back over here - enjoy!
@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Жыл бұрын
I think that the upholstery on the bed is because it's a hire van. Usually they are normal mattresses. Oh and it's a motorhome - caravans are trailers lol. We had a similar motorhome to that but a little larger. It had a bigger kitchen and an overhead bed (and air con!). Oh and that spider was tiny - you should see the size of the wolf spiders that invade our houses in the autumn! Hope you have a fab time over here in Blightly - looking forward to your next video!

You close the cassette toilet inside before pulling out the cassette to empty. You can (in the US we do use) use the same dump hose you are used to when you are dumping the waste at a waste station so you don't get splash back. It really doesn't smell if you keep the toilet opening closed. You can also use a deodorizer tab to keep any odor down. They are actually a pretty good way to have a toilet in a small vehicle.
@raymondporter2094 Жыл бұрын
In the UK we have concentrated flush fluid, often pink, which you put in the top flush tank - a glug of that and top up with water - and concentrated fluid for the waste tank, often blue but sometimes green, which deodorises and breaks down the waste product in the cassette toilet. That should deal with the "smell" but obviously it is sensible to keep the loo flap closed, especially when trying to remove the cassette. You can use tabs instead of the blue fluid but obviously you don't need to dilute that with water as it will start to dilute as soon as you use the loo. Emptying it is no real problem because there are stations (often signed "Elsan" after a proprietary toilet fluid) to do that, and a tap/hose to flush out the toilet cassette. Then slot back into your van and you are good to go for another couple of days. Of course if you are on a campsite there are toilet/showere facilities. We usually camp on farmers' fields etc with no facilities save for a tap for drinking water and an Elsan disposal point, but if you are on a campsite it often makes sense to use the facilities rather than deplete your freshwater supplies and fill your own toilet! SOME sites in the UK have water and waste pipes you can plumb into your vehicle together with TV aerial, but mostly you have either to drive to the "station" to refill your drinking water (though you can use an "aquaroll" to fill up at the tap without moving your RV, and then roll your 49 litres or whatever back to your van using the handle) and the stations to empty your waste water and the cassette toilet are likely to be dotted around the campsite. It all makes sense and within a day or two will seem normal & instinctive. I hope you enjoy/have enjoyed your trip to the UK. I remember seeing you in Canada...!

Growing up we went camping in a caravan. Both my parents and my grandparents caravans they didn’t have built in water tanks like Clementine. You’d have a aquaroll or other kind of large container and then a pipe would come out of the caravan and screw into the top of the container. (The aquaroll is like a plastic barrel with an opening in one end. You attach a metal handle to it so it rolls along the ground like a wheel so you can get it to and from the tap to the caravan. As far as the toilet it’s usually a chemical one (think like a compost toilet but not). You’d then empty it at the Elsan point. (That was always dad’s job! 😂😂) As far as not having a vent, your windows might open a little bit without letting out too much warmth so you could just open the window behind the cooker a little. Or you might have a sky light near the cooker. 😊 Talking about the bed - a normal mattress wouldn’t necessarily work with that split to get into the storage underneath….

I was born in North Yorkshire, UK and now live in the USA with my American wife, but have been to that area a few times and we do know the Bath area quite well, we had our honeymoon in and around Shepton Mallet, if you think your motor home is large to drive on UK roads you should try driving a Motor coach or semi, it can be interesting! I did laugh when you were doing the walk around @ 17.20 when you said that "everything in England is like the States but just enough different, like bizarre world" I have been using pretty much the same phrase for more years than I can remember about things in the USA! "everything's the same, but different" it was like hearing my thoughts in a female voice!! Have a good time in the UK. Remember..... Keep Left!

Love the RV.. definately looks spacious inside. Ps. as in any country... there are different types of RVs.. some have heating, aircon, fans etc even in the UK (my parents RV does). Also you can fill your fresh water tank at many campsites... you just need to ask... also look for the "Amenities" symbols for what the sites offer, before you book and choose ones with water refill stations. In the UK we have many types of camp grounds eg from official wild camping, to just tents, just RVs, Bellamy sites, Eco Site, etc.. the list goes on. You always need to check the Amenities list before going so you won't be disappointed.

Be careful where you dump the grey tank, most drains in the road or the hardstanding on sites are surface water drains and run into a watercourse so check that it runs into a foul drain first. Fish don't like washing up liquid, body wash or veg oil/fat. The ones at petrol/gas stations are more likely to be connected to a foul sewer.

Welcome to the UK guys! Loved your bewilderment during the tour of your motorhome, esp the toilet. We have a touring caravan (aka a trailer) and it has somehow become my job to empty the cassette every few days. Our rule is no #2s💩and use the toilet on site during the day! 😅 The pink and blue chemicals should keep the toilet from getting smelly - but definitely keep the blade (what Eric called the slot) closed when not in use. There are some sites that have “fully serviced pitches” where you have power, grey waste drainage and fresh water but electric only is the norm. Enjoy the UK and hope the roads aren’t too awful. Love from Scotland ❤🏴

@emilykirsch-mills1099 Жыл бұрын
Fascinating to see the differences in US and British camping! We'd call that a motorhome rather than a caravan, caravans are towed. We do have pitches in the UK called all service pitches, they're usually more expensive and not as common, but they have water and sewage hook ups, but you have to have a more modern caravan or motorhome that supports this. We also call the concrete or gravel pitches hard standing pitches, and again they will be that bit more expensive. You actually will probably get in trouble for dumping grey water in any old drain in the UK, you need to find a specific motorhome waste site. Most campsites have them and they're effectively a parking space with a large drain in the middle. They can often be found next to the wash block. Some common touring routes in the UK may have some dumpsites outside of campsites for you to use, for example the NC500 in Scotland has a fair few as lots of people wild camp on that route rather than using campsites. Enjoy your travels, and drive safe on our wee roads!

As a Brit it is so interesting seeing Britain through American eyes. I did much the same back in 1994 on my only visit to the US (although I did/do have family members in the US and Canada). Now I live in France. I wonder what you'd make of van life and camping over here?
@a.w860 Жыл бұрын
OMG, so excited to watch this. Hope you all have fun. And I really like the manual pull-down bed. That's so much better than the electric one, I always worry about the electric one malfunctioning or the electricity not working for some random reason and not being able to use it or it being stuck like you said. I've never seen a manual one like that so I'll keep that on my list of good design ideas. Love It.

Hello Eric and Allison. Welcome to England again. If I had not seen you in cold New England in winter, I would not have believed you had come here around the start of winter. I had many a holiday in a towed caravan as a kid. Not my holiday of choice as an adult, but strangely I enjoy your videos, probably from nostalgia. Tomorrow I will be watching a live video from Benidorm, Spain, near where my girlfriend's parents used to have a house. I reckon that would have been a better location, since temperatures here were -5C here about a week back and you came on a warm day. Also it is near the shortest day, with sun up about 08:00 and sunset before 16:00. At least you are down south, where it is a bit warmer.

If you're looking for something to simplify your toilet situation you can get something like the Americanizer which is a fitting that attaches to the RV where the cassette toilet was and has a fitting for sewer hoses. Hi guys, as an RVer in Europe and an owner to a similar motor home let me give you two little information:)...the toilet cassette never stinks when handled properly which means emptied and rinsed regularly and using the fluid or tablet to dissolve "what goes in it"while keeping it smelling nice.Much more higienic and convenient than stinky slinky!..Rvers in Europe never dump their grey water just like anywhere they like, there are special places where you dump it, at campgrounds or even at some parking places made for this purpose... so we never get "fined"!just saying...
