Here is the story of my garter snakes: I always wanted a snake (I mean who wouldn't? They are awesome!) but my parents hated them. One day me and my mom were in the basement and we saw two tiny little garter snakes. After just looking at them I knew something was wrong, they were severely malnourished and one was suffering from a severe respiratory infection. I knew that I couldn't just throw them outside so I set up a old 20 gallon fish tank and called the nearest vet. One week and 500$ later they had medication and were on the way to recovery. At first I wasn't sure they would make it but eventually they got better. The male we named Ember, he is very stunted to this day because of the malnourishment that he suffered from and doesn't like people at all. He will bite you if you go near, unless you are me or my little sister (the only people he trusts). It's been months now and he is still underweight ut is making progress and should be better soon. Clover is the female, she ate right away and got back up to the proper weight within a few months. She loves all people and has a fan clube of little kids that come down the street every friday to watch her eat then hold her. She was the one with the RI but she recovered within a month. After having them for a while we started we started seeing some changes in Clover and we think that she is gravid. She and Ember must have been a pair. Everyone wants one of the babies so we hope she is. Just last week we upgraded they're tank and now they have a large bioactive 30 gallon tank. They will be a part of our family forever. Your videos have helped me so much and If you are reading this I want to say thank you.

I found a baby garter in my dogs food dish, it snuck im somehow and was I think eating their food? But anyway I caught him. He had a respiratory infection as well as a kink near the bottom of his tail. We took him to the vet, 300$ spent.. His name was Snack... He passed away after two months, not because of improper care, but some issues with something else. We dont exactly know why he died, but we did know that he was well taken care of.

@@josh1electricboogaloo250 not a good idea wild snakes usually have a difficult time acclimating to captivity especially as adults plus they might have parasites or disease that is not apparent. Snakes are also important to the ecosystem is just best to let it be wild and if someone really wants a Bull snake just buy one is most likely to be healthy and eat just always research the breeder first ^^

Wait, if they hatch before they're pushed out, how come the stillborns aren't in eggs?
@ashfreywar98624 жыл бұрын
I’d assume that after the babies get out of their shells, the mother digests the shells, and I assume she digested the shell and wasn’t able to digest the baby snakes and pushed them out
@madelinehero43534 жыл бұрын
Ovoviporus snake eggs don't have a hard shell like egg-laying snakes do, the egg is a thin membrane, almost like a bubble. The stillborns usually are born in their egg, but it's such a thin membrane, it's hard to see, and usually dries up around their body when exposed to the air. It's why the stillborns are still scrunched up. The others hatch and kind of slither out, so they elongate, but the stillborns are pushed out still in ball form.

Congrats, Emily and Ed! And, I love "clutter". :) This did get me curious, though, so I looked up some articles talking about baby snakes, and this is what I found being used. It is a "clutch of eggs" and a "litter of neonates". And if they are older than that and depending on the author's style and the situation, it seems to be a nest, pit, den, or bed (so there seems to be more emphasis on their location than their being together). Rattlesnakes are also called a rhumba or coil. I think I have heard coil for other kinds of snakes, too.

Watching you catch them at first I was like, "Careful! They're delicate!" Then I remember I've been catching garter snakes of similar size since I was like six or seven. They're pretty hardy little creatures. Definitely one of my favorites. Have you guys ever dealt with eastern red bellied snakes? They're super cute to and even tinier.
@foxwoodjones98312 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but Ed & Emily have dealt with Dekay’s brown snakes as babies (& now that they are grown). They are as small as the red-bellied snakes you are talking about. Then after they had gotten the DeKay’s Brown Snakes, they did get some Red-Bellied snakes. They were able to house them with the Dekay’s Brown snakes because they often live together in the wild. 👍🏼 Sorry if you had already found that out.
@LostPeopleOfEarth1582 жыл бұрын
@@foxwoodjones9831 Oo! I've never heard of Dekay's Brown snakes. I'll have to look them up. The Eastern Red Bellied snake lives wild where I live. They were one of my favorite finds under old tires and boards when I was a little girl. I even did my sixth grade animal report on them. I might love them but due to the strict animal laws where I live I can't even have a garter snake or any other native species. So I enjoy indulging in the pet garter snake video from time to time.

Around the 10:30 mark you can see one has a red dot on his head. Not sure if they all have one but you pointed out dots on other babies. It’s just neat to see the different patterns. I know coloring or patterns don’t usually mean anything special other than identification.
@whoisfoxezzvods46204 жыл бұрын
Just curious why don’t you put the Gravid female into a temporary bin in your rack with paper instead of substrate until she gives birth so it would be easier to find the babies?
@Cleptrio4 жыл бұрын
Not Ed or Emily, but they did say that they didn’t know if their red side was gravid or not. I’d also assume it would be difficult to predict when exactly they’d give birth.
@Tinyvalkyrie4104 жыл бұрын
Also not Emily, but my guess is it’s because that would be unnecessarily stressful for the mother. It would be easier on the humans, but harder on the snakes. Garters like to have companions and they like to climb, making racks less than ideal.
@yvainestelmack71964 жыл бұрын
@@Tinyvalkyrie410 but footie fox does have a point. Why not keep them in the cage but temporarily remove the bedding for a week or two and replace it with paper towel? it wouldn't kill the isopods and mama would still have friends.
@Tinyvalkyrie4104 жыл бұрын
Yvaine Stelmack it would still be unnecessarily stressful, and replacing the bio active bedding with paper towel means you have to fully clean the cage every time they poop. It would probably be more work overall than just leaving it. Also, it’s not like finding the babies in the substrate is that hard. It just doesn’t make sense to increase the stress level of the snake just to potentially save a small amount of time.
@Sailor_S4 жыл бұрын
I would guess it's because they never know when they will give birth. In several previous years you can watch and see how Emily's garters specifically are very unpredictable with when they give birth. Additionally, Emily has mentioned that garters are a social species as well as (one of?) the only species she owns that prefer to bask instead of having heat mats. So I would guess that those reasons make it hard to isolate the mother before the clutter is born.
