So Copycat didn't hit me as hard as other episodes when I first watched it, but I recently had a couple deaths in my family and had to deal with processing that with a 9 year old and 6 year old. It hits differently for sure. This show can make you feel different things even years after you've watched that specific episode.

Seeing Adam break, wasn't expecting that. It's okay to cry, and Bluey will get you in the feels, but I thought Jay would cry at Copycat. There are a lot of episodes which will get you, but there's also some funny ones [Sleepover for example] The first half of season 1 is more "kid show" episodes, but it'll get better in later seasons. That's not to say early episodes are bad, just going from good to great.

@leogothisoscar271 Alot of Bluey episode titles have double meanings. Like how "Takeaway" is both in reference to food as well as Bandit's own takeaway lesson by the end of the ep. Copycat at first is simply the name of the game they're playing, but goes on to reflect the actual playing style that Bluey is engaging in.

I think Copycat is about Bluey's understanding of the unexpected. She knows death is a thing but was never the less blindsided by the bird dying. In replaying it she is able to set her own expectations going in and is ready for the worst, but even then it didn't end the way she was expecting. In the end she is left with an understanding and acceptance that things can happen that are out of one's control.

We as adults understand death. We understand what it means. Bluey is still not able to get what it means. She knows she is sad she needs to deal with it in play but still is not able to get it. We like Adam get it so it hits different. I watched my kids do the same play and move on. It takes a long time to grasp what death means.
@crimsonghoul8983
@crimsonghoul8983 25 күн бұрын
I don't know if that is really the case. From what I can deduce, she didn't change the story. Usually, we would wish that the bird survived and lived happily ever after, but instead she chose to reenact the situation the same way it happened. Is it just me or does that mean she is more accepting of the bird's death and recognizing that there is nothing she can do?

Oh boy, here we go, Copycat is definitely the start of Bluey's deeper episodes 😭 The fact that Bluey learned to cope with and understand the budgie dying by re-enacting the whole experience with Bingo and Chili was so unexpected for me, but so real and mature for this series. Children learn how to understand things many different ways, and Bluey found her own way ;; Also Sleepover is a whole metaphor for taking care of drunk friends.

It says a lot about the general state of children's programming in the last 20 years - that both these adults were absolutely gobsmacked at the idea something could die. That would *NEVER* happen in US programming. Nor in most other regions, as far as I've seen. But this show handles it so gracefully. Death is part of life, it's out of our hands.
@Iacedrom54
@Iacedrom54 25 күн бұрын
It used to. Sesame Street didn't sugarcoat it when long time cast member Mr. Hooper died. They addressed it in an episode where Big Bird reacted very similarly to Bluey - he says he doesn't want it to be that way and the rest of the cast explains things agnostically, like Bandit does. That these things happen, they're permanent, and we can keep the memories but we can't do anything about it.

I work with young children, some of them severely traumatized, and to me "Copycat" is the most profound episode of Bluey. It gives such important insight into the development of kids at this stage, in such a poignant way. Intellectually, most of us "know" that kids are little sponges, soaking up everything around them. But we don't always consider the realistic consequences of that; in a traumatic moment, we don't think about the fact that these kids are looking to us, their adults, to know what to do and how to react. This is why modeling behavior is so, so important. How you react to a frightening/dangerous situation could very well set the tone for how your child will react to similar situations for the rest of their life. It's equal parts terrifying and fascinating to me as an educator. That, and just the more basic reality many don't consider before becoming parents/educators/childcare workers; that the day will inevitably come where we have to explain something like death to a child. A child who, by all rights, should be too young to have to consider such things. But the world isn't usually that kind. Circumstances will eventually arrive where it's inevitable, and while it may seem like kindness in the moment, the worst thing you could possibly do is avoid the subject. Kids need to understand things, it's one of their strongest drives. If we don't explain things, they generally won't leave the subject alone, they'll just draw their own conclusions, and who knows what harm could come of that. The instinct to shield and protect is understandable, but it's so important to rise above it and arm our children with knowledge. But yes, play is an incredibly important part of how kids learn and process. It's why things like play therapy exist, for kids too young/traumatized to engage with talk therapy. It's how they learn social boundaries, explore and experiment with new concepts, test the limits of their minds and bodies for the first time... It's hugely vital in ways we're still coming to fully understand, from a scientific standpoint. It's also one of the best ways to build a relationship with a child; I mean, it's basically the only way kids make friends with each other. But the first time you see a child using play like this to process something traumatic can be intense, to say the least. As a more upbeat (ha!) sidenote, I absolutely adore the music in "Copycat" and it may well be one of my favorite tracks in the whole show, up there with "The Sign". The way the melody follows after itself, almost tripping over itself in this playful romp, only to suddenly sober to the reality of the dying bird. Then that same playful track takes on an almost melancholic impact as it resurges for Bluey's reenactment, then triumphant as Bingo unknowingly defies death, if only for the duration of the game. Just so much context-based versatility in such a fun and well-crafted piece.

I'm watching this show for the 1st time with the boys and the Copycat episode got me just as much as Adam (if not more). Brought me right back to when I was in High School. My mom worked at a Pet Store and there was a baby Love Bird that was being ignored by it's mom. My mom let me take it home and I hand fed the baby until it got big and grew all it's feathers in. One day, I was playing video games with my brother in his room and his friend who had just come over was yelling into us that one of or cats had the bird. We also had a Cockatoo that liked to open cages and had let my bird out without us knowing. My little guy didn't make it, but I never forgot about them. This just brought back ALL of those emotions.

You KNOW when the episode "Copycat" is written so well, that you have one of the KZbinrs crying at such a heartfelt moment like Adam! But on a serious note, losing a loved one can be extremely hard. whether it's a pet or a family member or friend, or even a beloved celebrity! The news of Miss Racheal Lillis' passing from her battle against cancer still hit some of us fans, and we've lost a few of the most beloved celebrities within a year's span: Betty White, Bob Saget, Gilbert Godfrey... And even more so years ago, like Steve Irwin and Robin Williams. I think the Bluey episode "Copycat" taught us about death and how it works in a way.

This is so oddly timed, my 3 1/2 yr old daughter came home from school yesterday and as we started playing, she pretended to faint and said, "dad i died". We've never talked to her about death or had it come up before, she definitely picked it up from school. I pretended to be a doctor and help her, then she sprang up and said "I'm awake" i smiled and said good. Then she says, "dad you die now", still reeling from this first moment i couldn't fully react to i snapped back "no, no I'm not going play dyeing." we moved on had dinner and usual night, but it's still bother me.

Copycat felt very real to me. They do watch us to see how we process and deal with new situations. It is confusing and heartbreaking to watch them play it out afterwards as they accept this is how the world works afterwards. You can’t protect them from everything but watching a part of their innocence go away especially at a young age can be a sad and sometimes oddly proud moment for parents.

Copycat reminds me of the little raccoon arc in Calvin and Hobbes. It follows pretty much the same plot: Calvin finds an injured raccoon and gets his parents to try to help it. They do what they can, but it dies, and Calvin is heartbroken. Then the story goes for a few more strips with Calvin trying to come to terms with what happened, and he is helped by talking to his mom and to Hobbes. In Sleepover I love Chili's face when Uncle Stripe runs away and leaves her with the kids. That look says it all. In Early Baby Indie says Polly is an early baby "like my sister". It never gives any more info than that, but it's interesting to see that Indie is using play to process something that happened in her own family, just as Bluey was doing in Copycat.

Copycat is a tough one, but I think the timing of it is right - I was about five when my great-uncle passed and that was when the concept of death actually sunk in for me, which lines up with Bluey's reaction to the budgie.

Going back to what I said last video, each episode hits each watcher differently. It's pretty remarkable how there is something for everyone in this series.

Wasn't expecting adam to get more emotional than jay in Copycat, that's the kind of emotional stuff that only gets more intense as you progress through the series.

Yeah, I really like how both Bluey and Bandit thought she had stopped copying him, but everything she did or said to process was copying how her father dealt with the situation

Funny you should mention how kids process their trauma through play in the same episode you watch Early Baby :) I believe the implication is that Indy has a premature younger sibling. At least that's how I interpreted it.

I work as an early childhood educator, and play is definitely SO important. For parents out there, please advocate for this in the classroom. it's being wiped out slowly. As for the episode, IMO bluey chosing to still have the budge die was to try emulate how bandit handled the situation, how he acknowledges it was sad, that he wanted the budgie to be okay too but then said they couldnt control that. Her replaying the day was her learning how to process her sadness in a healthy way, something she learned second hand from bandit. Kids see EVERYTHING, they also TELL on their parents to teachers so make sure yalls grown up conversations are ACTUALLY private. The things ive heard 😂

Welcome to the weeping, my friends! That was a light little sample of what's yet to come. You don't have to be a parent for this to get all up in your feels, either. I'm in my late 40s with no kids and some episodes still feel like I got socked in the gut. Even if it's something wholesome and sweet, those waterworks hit HARD.
