In this vlog we make our way from Nuwara Eliya to Ella in our Tuk Tuk. The journey started of amazing as we were surrounded by beautiful Tea plantation and meeting so much friendly locals it then took a turn as we got lost and stuck in the middle of nowhere!!

Your history lesson is good. Yes Nuwara Eliya as it is now, was developed by the British to resemble like they home, and called Little England. It is truly a Little England. They had a similar one in the Subcontinent in Simla (I think). Tea too was introduced to Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) by the British. The tea plant is not native to Ceylon but smuggled out of China. Ceylon tea plant has its own colourful history on the way from China. All the tea pickers were brought in by the Brits and they still live in those appalling conditions, hardly anything has improved. Enjoy your stay.

I think the famous Opium Wars were fought over tea, as the Brits had a huge deficit to China and they wanted to break the Chinese tea monopoly and the rest is history now. I assume it was in a place called Haputhale where the first tea plant was planted in Sri Lanka by a Scotsman, not far from where you are. Yup colonial legacy!

@@julieanddaniel Actually you are very well versed in local histories as I have been following you to substitute my practical knowledge, because I have not visited most of Asia only learnt through academic studies. Someone had mentioned opium wars, yes that is correct, cession of HK and New Territories to Brits in the name of tea. All the hill country rail roads were built primarily for commercial purposes; tea and rubber, both were introduced. I think 9 arch bridge is in Ella, that too is British engineering. I do not want to bombard you with reading as you are travelers. If you ever can get hold of a biography written by Leonard Wolff one of last Brits local administrators, you can learn heaps how the place was governed. He was the husband of famous Virginia Wolff, and their intellectual club. Happy traveling, you both are blessed!
