Karen I have several vase heads. Some I’ve had for forty years. I love collecting them. But my most recent purchase is a 1915 treadle sewing machine that has the original paper work and sale ticket. I love it. Also a antique laundry clothes press. Such awesome things. I really love watching your videos. You and Roger are the best ❤

Chandelier Prisms: you could always offer the prisms as loose replacements parts or for repurposing, which would cut down on the shipping size/cost. A couple times a year we make a day trip to a town about 2 hours away (Port Townsend, WA) and my wife always stops at one of their Antique Malls, because one of the venders sells bulk lots of chandelier parts, drops and prisms. She uses them to make new Garden Whimseys.

Rodin’s Thinker: it’s interesting that the model for the Thinker (originally the Poet) was a muscular French Prize Fighter. The Thinker was actually part of a much larger commission called The Gates of Hell. The entire work was started in the late 19th Century, but the Thinker was cast later in the project, over 25 years after it started. It’s interesting that an artist of that status could make a living creating pieces that took a career to create. Contrast that to something like Andy Warhol’s assembly line art production.

Bronze Molds: Small statues are usually poured as a single molten event, but the molds themselves have to be in parts (at least 2) to get the piece out after it hardens. The more intricate the item, the more parts to the mold. I saw this for the first time as a kid at a car factory in Michigan, on a school trip. They were making engine blocks using a casting process. Not a Rodin statue, but the process is similar. Making ceramic green ware (which I worked at as a young teen) is also similar with the common molds being in 2-4 pieces, held together during the pour with large rubber bands.

Larger pieces, that need to be hollow, are more complex and may be cast in pieces assembled later or use some sort of removable or sacrificial plug so you don’t consume so much molten metal on a single copy. Process simplicity is why many small bronze items are cast solid. You put the mold parts together, turn the filling hole up and pour it full. Once it hardens, you open the mold and pull out the item (like a bullet, or a made in India animal figure), but that type of casting consumes a lot of precious metal, compared to a method of producing a hollow casting.

Rodin's "The Thinker" was part of his 1880s design for the "Gates of Hell" and the first casting of it was made in 1904. The gold bookend is poorly cast and not even accurate. Despite you often not knowing details of the objects you find, I still like your videos and seeing how you and Roger enjoy working together.
