So glad everyone is okay! I work in marketing for a restoration company. We deal with fire, flood, mold, biohazards, and so on. It’s amazing how much damage smoke from the fire and also water to put out a fire can cause. To anyone reading this, a few pieces of advice; clean out your dryer vents, do not leave candles unattended, and never leave laptops plugged in and on a bed (they can overheat). Stay safe everyone!
@meggnogg Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your advice. Especially noting the 'smaller' more everyday instances that you may not even realise can cause a fire like the laptop. My PS4 once overheated as I was watching a film at night and fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night to a room full of smoke and a plastic burning smell. It turns out there was dust caught in the vents of it that I hadn't cleaned out. Everything in my room (white furniture, light coloured walls and light coloured accessories) all retained smoke damage 😔 including some irreplaceable objects. Moral of the story: regularly dust vents of electricionics and try to limit the use time to a couple of hours at a time. I was lucky I woke up when I did to eliminate any major fire my room didn't go up in flames with me in it.

Also don’t leave rags with chemicals on them anywhere. If you don’t want to wash them immediately, dispose of them immediately. My aunt’s entire house burned down because she had two rags with different chemicals (one was paint I think and one a cleaner) lying together in a washing basket and they ignited.

Ohh, never thought about the laptop. I've been unplugging mine after learning the hard way with my last tablet that keeping wireless electronics on the charger can cause the battery to expand. Woooooow, I'm sorry for you but glad everyone is safe and sound! It also sounds like everyone reacted VERY well to the fire, which is a good thing to know for any future emergencies. Sarah didn't leave the fire unattended and called for help, you grabbed the kids, Lo evacuated, Chris assessed the situation and realised he could put out the fire, Brendan assisted.. Those are all very good reactions to an emergency. My first home burned down completely, and I can very much sympathise with how rattled you are probably feeling right now. A home sized fire extinguisher is my go-to housewarming gift nowadays.

waving wet/wrung out towels through the air will help clear smoke from a room quickly, then just toss the towels in the wash. Old restaurant hack that you'll likely only use when you burn something like toast or your fireplace smokes, but useful to have as an additional step to opening windows. Glad you're all okay and you have the moments of C's joy! Thank goodness everyone is ok! Many people don’t realize that candles can cause damage with normal everyday use. My husband and I own an hvac service business and you can tell just by looking at the furnace filter if candles are used in the home. The filters are always much darker and often covered in black soot from the candle wicks burning. I decided years ago that I would only use the led candles and electric warmers for candle melts. Any time I’m tempted to buy a beautifully scented candle, I think of those black furnace filters and resist the urge.

My family and I had a small house fire in Sept.. it started in our room and we didn’t know until the smoke detector started melting.. the heat was so hot and so quick it didn’t even register the alarm until it was too late. The fire stayed contained in our bedroom but the soot and the water from the firemen has completely destroyed our home. The biggest loss was our dear cat. 😢 hands down the scariest day of my life. I’m very glad you all are safe! And I know the fear that will reside with you for the rest of your life. ❤

Thank God you still have a house! It sucks to loose your belongings, but it's GREAT everyone's safe.

So very sorry you had to experience that! So very thankful there were no injuries! I can only imagine your emotion roller coaster. Prayers for you and your precious family. 💙

Im glad everyone is okay, and that the house is kinda okay. Fire is scary. On a christmas concert 10+ yrs ago my hair got lit on fire by a candle during singing so that was "fun" too. Ever since then I only use LED candles even on my advent wreath.

Glad everyone is safe! Within a year ago my cousins house burnt down. Like the whole house. They only had what was on their bodies. And that's it. It was a lot. The community came together to give them basically almost everything they needed and they bought the rest. They are in a new house and are happy. And safe, most important part. God was really watching out for you all.

Like you said-the most important thing is everyone is OK. Stuff is just stuff and can be replaced. I imagine this is one Christmas you won’t forget!

I'm sorry you had a fire, but glad everyone is safe and unharmed. Material things being ruined sucks of course - but they're material and can be replaced unlike people! ❤️ My mum has always been very cautious about fire and especially around Christmas and all the cozy candles! She's really hammering on about it, reminding us every so often (her children are now all in their 30's and 40's). Her two main ones are candles and chargers, always pull out your chargers after using them! And of course, she now has a lot of LED candles instead of "real" ones.

Oh my goodness! A house fire has been one of my biggest fears since I was a very small child. Glad you’re all ok! Excuse my ignorance but I had no idea that the insurance company cleaned the stuff that was damaged. Makes sense I suppose I guess I just assumed you would be on your own for that. Unless I misunderstood….

I am so happy you all were ok. My dad just had a fire in his house right before thanksgiving. They have to basically get all new stuff. all from one pot the boiled over on the stove. Prayers and love to you and your family thru all of this.

Oh my gosh that is super scary!!! So incredibly happy that everyone was ok. Things can be replaced but people can’t.

I’m so happy that everyone is okay!! My family also had a fire scare about a week before Christmas, thankfully not as bad as yours though! We had a minor electrical fire in one of our outlets, luckily my 7 year old brother found it first and immediately told an adult and they got it all handled quickly without any smoke or fire damage to anything except the outlet, but I can’t believe how much stuff is unsalvageable from that little bit of wreaths being on fire! I’m so sorry :(

We had a flood a couple days after moving into our house last year. All my stuff was still in boxes was ruined. And the newly renovated everything was ruined. I chose to look at it as a cleansing. Probably got rid of things I didn't really need anymore anyways

I actually just got a job in insurance and I am glad to hear there really are companies that are doing things right. If you feel comfortable disclosing who your insurance is through then I am sure they would love the promo.

Wow a lot of that stuff doesn’t even look damaged. I would have never thought it’d be dangerous!
