Genghis Khan was remarkably progressive for his time, too, coming from a similar background as Shan Yu. Abolishing the practice of bridenapping (literally a guy could come to a girl's home and steal her, take her back to his home, and declare her his wife, and it was binding and legal, if the girl's male relatives couldn't fight the dude off) was a HUGE deal, and under his rule, women were treated far closer to equal than they had been before. He also established the first organized postal system, repatriated architects, doctors, scholars and other skilled craft/tradesmen throughout his lands and compensated them, to promote higher skills and better learning, always fought to take libraries and universities intact, and redistribute the knowledge he'd captured for the betterment of his people, and always gave cities and towns the chance to surrender. Was he an over-s*xed barbarous brute? Yes, but not really any more so than other warlords and leaders of that era, and many after. But he did a lot of good, too.

During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.

Adding to that, technically it was forbidden for common folk to use dragon/Phoenix emblems because it was the symbol of the royal family, emperor/empress respectively. To use that would be declaring yourself a royal, which was taboo. Although there might've been some exceptions for which both symbols were used; that's why it was such a powerful moment when the emperor gave Mulan that crest, like, _Medal of Honor_ & pass it down as an heirloom & family status elevated _powerful._

@@velvetchoisan I really don't want to be mean, but what you describing right now is headcanon at best. If you want to write fanfic about this more power to you but please stop presenting headcanons as irrefutable facts, Mulan is one of my favorite childhood movies, and I've seen this done with this movie for years, and it always bothers me since this is not what the movie was about, and you and others are basing these things on sentences taken out of context that can be interpreted in 100 different ways. I don't want to be hurtful but just because it's your headcanon doesn't make it fact, heck I wouldn't even trust what the directors said, because this simply wasn't in the movie. Once again sorry, I might seem sensitive on the subject but it comes from the place of passion and love for this movie, and I truly think that all those fan theories that, sprang out of the snow like daisies in recent years, take away from the wonderful and empowering story this movie presents to us, if those fan theories add to the story to you and you love them, great, more power to you, but just remember that there are fans like me who like it for what it is and don't need some extra content. Anyway, good luck with this fanfiction if you will ever get to writing it. Peace.

@@aquamarina5216 Okay, you really need to put the brakes here, because you've already done this in another thread. 1. This version of Mulan is not historically accurate. Some sections of the great wall, colored fireworks, and simplified Chinese weren't around when the legend of Mulan was written. This isn't the only movie to do this. In fact, a lot of movies and series aren't historically accurate. (Vikings for its timeline, Reign for its costuming, Apocalypto for its depiction of Mayan sacrifices are some examples). 2. No one in this comment section is idolizing Shan Yu and calling him a "feminist icon" just because he recognized Mulan's military merit outside of her sex. He still killed men, women, and children. On the historical aspect, there have been historical records of Mongol women having some form of power (there are records of them having some roles in the military, but scholars contest on its authenticity, though they did have more say in raising their children, being part of the royal court and having some form of authority overall compared to women in China at that time) but again, this movie isn't fully historically accurate. The Mongols are not the main perspective of the story. Plus, I doubt they had that much time to squeeze in this complicated detail in an hour and a half movie where they are not the focus. 3. It's *way* easier to simply ignore something on the internet rather than actively comment on it. I tried to ignore your comments, but you have responded to other people rudely and in a condescending manner just because their perspective does not align with yours, and there is nothing peaceful about that.

It makes sense that Mulan chose not to go home when she was told to: it would have brought shame to her family for getting kicked out of the army.
@kathleenkilmartin54943 жыл бұрын
Idk. Because her whole starting point was that she was telling her father not to go. Which would have been much more dishonorable (if not punishable by law). While perhaps bringing somewhat “dishonorable,” Mulan being kicked out kind of fixes that. I feel like their interpretation about Mulan being more motivated by the sense of accomplishment makes more sense.

@@neolithiumproduction completely agree. And I really like that motivation. Or motivations. Her love for her father and her desire to prove herself. And in a way, the desire to prove that she can do something right in this context, kind of negates the strict definition of “family honor” as a motivation, because she’s doing something that could seriously jeopardize her family’s reputation if she’s discovered (and honestly, there is a slight plot hole in that if she distinguishes herself as a war hero, how exactly will that work when she gets back home).

One thing that I *love* so much in this is the chilling cut between them singing "A Girl Worth Fighting For" and coming upon the burnt village and massacred soldiers. One of my favorite exchanges is between Mulan and her father “So you’ll die for honor?” “I will die doing what is right” i love that line because it sets up that the father isn’t just doing this because of honor, but because defending his country is the right thing to do that’s a little detail that shows that the father isn’t just obsessed with honor, which he further reveals at the end by telling Mulan that he doesn’t care about the treasures she’s brought back and that it’s an honor to be her father, cause he loves her that much.

i'm pretty sure that she didn't go home during the "i'll make a man out of you" montage was because getting cut from the army is dishonorable, so her going home would still mean dishonor on her family.

Not sure if someone said this already but I love how they sing "A Girl Worth Fighting For" and they are originally singing it to give them motivation in the form of finding a wife to marry after the war to motivate them to win and survive but then they see the burnt down village and the little doll and they realize the girl that's actually worth fighting for is the little girl who died and they really need to win this war for her and all the other little girls who could die if they don't 😭

Growing up Mulan was my favorite princess because (at the time) she was like the only princess who’s “happy ever after” wasn’t reliant on a man coming to save her from her plight. Like she actually went out and did sht, and kid me loved that (and I still do).

My biggest question about the "Be a Man" scene, when Mulan gets the arrow down. How did she do it. She had no bow. How did it land perfectly at Shangs feet. Also she was so far away and high up. For her to throw it accurately is CRAZY
@kirag95093 жыл бұрын
She probably just threw it and got lucky. You’d be surprised at how much velocity something picks up when you throw it from high up. As for the accuracy tho, Mulan probably just got extremely lucky haha

19:50 I think the fact she stuck with it despite that free pass to go home is a great turning point for Mulan as a character. She’s realizing in that moment that this isn’t something she did just to save her father, it’s also what she wants for herself; where she can make a difference and prove herself.

I enjoy the fact that Disney took the initiative to follow Asian art style even though it is a Disney production. They didn’t have to put all of their wide-eyed Disney styles on everything. A story with the cultural background needs to hold true to the art style. It just helps to complete the story even if it deviates from some fact.

That "porridge" is most likely rice porridge, not the oat ones most of us are familiar with. I started eating rice porridge (congee) because 1. it's really easy to make and it can taste good depending on what you add 2. Mulan

One of my favorite Disney movies for sure! Short story: At the last music festival I went to with one of my friends, some guys at our camping site were playing „I‘ll make man out of you“ (and as far as I remember „circle of life“ from the lion king) everyday out loud singing along at the top of their lungs. Me and my friend singing along as well (though not at the top of our lungs, to shy for that 😂). I absolutely loved it. My everyday highlight at the camping site 😎

a detail that i love about mulan is that it's a musical until they get to the destroyed village, the song doesn't even finish and it suddenly the war becomes something much more real. It is also the last song in the movie.

Best laugh I’ve had all week. Absolutely wheezing at the commentary during the lake scene. And Grandma Fa is the best. I have the oddest memory associated with this movie. When it came out, Mom and I saw it together and then went to get a mani-pedi at our favorite nail salon. When the lady doing my pedicure asked how our day was going, I told her I’d just seen Mulan and loved it. The lady doing my mother’s pedicure then said “I’ve been trying to get my son to go. He’s terrified of the eyes.” I thought she meant Shan Yu’s yellow eyes. Nope. Her son was terrified of the way the Chinese characters eyes were shaped. ....I’ve never forgotten this because, though these ladies were not Chinese they also had similarly shaped eyes to Mulan and I couldn’t understand why her son would be scared of Mulan but not his mother. I’ve always wondered if this is a cultural thing-that other ethnicities with similar eye shapes also see the Chinese eye shape as weird/scary, but it seems it would be deeply disrespectful to ask. And I hope I haven’t offended anyone now by sharing this story.

Funnily enough, one of the first times I saw this movie was when I was in a kind of 3-week Chinese language course in middle school. I had seen it when I was really young, but hadn't since then. What was cool was that my teacher had us watch the Chinese dubbed version with English subtitles as a way for us to hear what Chinese actually sounded like for an extended period of time, which then helped us relax some when it came to recognizing tonal differences and not rushing when we were trying to speak Chinese. Ever since then, I've had a relatively hard time listening to it in English because it just sounds better in Chinese, it's hard to put into words. Like Mulan calling her dog "Little Brother," which is 弟弟 (di di) in Mandarin Chinese and it rolls off the tongue a lot easier. Anyways, there are a couple things in the movie that I just kind of wish they put fully in Chinese (i.e. place names, titles, names, nicknames, etc.), but I get that it's a product of its time.

I love this movie. She worked hard, earned respect, restored honor to her family, and got the guy at the end. Much better than the live action mess that was recently made. When I heard they were going to make the live action version, without singing, I knew it was going to be bad. I also feel bad for the actress in the live action version because people were saying she didn't look Chinese enough even though she is actually Chinese.
