We were motorbiking around Europe and stopped in Barcelona. Sitting in the ramblas wife felt a slight brush against her bare leg where her bag was under her seat between the feet. Turned round and a guy was walking off with the bag, he’d reached under the chair from behind and quietly pulled it out. Now my 5’ nothing Mrs was after him like a terrier and grab the bag from him when he couldn’t cross the traffic. He just looked at her and shrugged his shoulders (no problem, I’ll get the next one), as if I wasn’t angry enough! I put him on the floor with a right haymaker but he was up and kicking at my head. Fortunately my pects were quite pronounced and he only hit my chest, he turned and ran into an alley. I started after him but all the local onlookers screamed not to follow, “he’ll have a knife and friends”. Wise words. That bag had our money, cards, wallets, licenses, phones, hotel bike and chain keys - because we don’t trust hotel safes. They are laughably easy to get into. Moral of story is keep your valuables with you, don’t assume safety, don’t go to dodgy areas, be aware of what’s around you. Make sure the suspicious guys know you’ve clocked them. There are scum everywhere, even your home town.

@@thebeautifulbeastuk Keep the faith. You stopped the cards, the licenses can be replaced, you get new tools while they get the shot ones. For the future fit removable jumpers to the engine, don’t lock the van and keep valuables with you. Maybe conceal a lockable toolbox well under the subframe or on the roof.

I'm quite sure the risk of getting your valuables, docs, cards etc. stolen is lower with hotel safe than on La Ramblas. These safes are easy to get into, but first the thief has to get to the room. On La Ramblas or nearby he needs just to get to you (your pocket or bag). I wouldn't drag my valuables with me if I can leave them to hotel even semi-safely. I've been mugged next to La Ramblas, I lost just some tens of Euros as thief dropped my cred. card when running away, could have lost much more but my stuff was in the hotel room.

Sorry to hear that. I know how you feel. I took an old Splitty around Europe in 1987 with my girlfriend. We had to cut the trip short because we were broken into by a drug head. He used the van as his drug den for the day whilst we were exploring Amsterdam. There were needles, blood and other body fluids everywhere. He also stole my girlfriend’s underwear as well as our passports and a camera with a reel of film of part of our trip. It had a big impact on us. Anyway, great that you’ll be meeting up with your daughter. Enjoy the rest of the trip. 👍

Sorry for your negative experience. You can buy eufy 360 USB cameras which have motion and sound detection. If they detect anything they send you a notification. Then put warning stickers on the outside of the van showing you have camera surveillance.

I really feel for you both. It probably wasn't even Italians. Bare minimum, though, is cameras linked to WiFi dumping to a cloud at least you would of been alerted and had, maybe, video for evidence. You could of even spoken through the cameras to scare them off. Anyway, all irrelevant now. I hope things improve for you both.

feel gutted for you and your missus mate. We travel to italy anually in our JAGUAR and are always on our toes but shit happens.(not been robbed yet)When we stop en route down a couple of hours south of NAPLES its always one stays with the motor when the other walks away........never left alone. one tip from a londoner who has been home burgled a few times..........leave a minimal cash in a standard safe and make sure the safe is fully visible........then relocate other important items inside cereal boxes and credit cards in tea caddies etc....robbers make the normal investigations.. normally.not the kitchen area. To be honest we would always carry on us the pasports and credit cards ,,,,,,,some cash stuffed in secret linings of suitcases left in hotel rooms

E for Elusive: What appears to be nothing is actually something. Fake Wall Socket is a Hiding Hole. A for Access: Hard to reach areas like high places and low places. Underneath the Gas Oven in the Kitchen. R for Repulsive: Things that make you want to puke like the toilet or trash. Underneath the Trash Bag in the Kitchen Waste Bin.

Thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear this happened, its just an unfortunate part of travel to some places and UK registrations oftern help target us when we travel. Its stuff, it can be replaced and you were not harmed, so dont let this put you off. Find a safe place to park thats busy and if you have internet onboard, maybe consider fitting a camara like ring or blink to the inside and outside so you have a way to keep a check or be alerted to this if it happens again, it will also help you relax when away from your vehicle! Dont let this put you off, you could look at something like a Revolut card and just top it up from your other cards / accounts, that way your other cards can remain somewhere safe! and you can stop a single card if the worst happens and still have contactless pay by phone for your other accounts. Most of the people you meet will be genuine and nice and that's what makes travel the wonderful experiance you had prior to this. Safe onward travels

Sorry to hear. This is my biggest fear but mostly for what they can destroy when breaking in. I never leave any valuables in my van. I sometimes think it would better to leave it unlocked and put a big sign on it saying "it's open, please enter to have a look! No valuables inside!". A safe where you keep valuables is probably the worse thing you can do. Everything handy in the same box - easy for them! Sorry you had to learn it this way. Good luck with your travels!

Thieves tend to watch ppl who just left their vehicles and usually pick out RVs cuz the potential for money/valuables is higher over regular cars. I put signs on my van that says "Please don't break windows. Dogs are safe, Well-ventilated with A/C " Thank You. That so far, has kept people from breaking in my van. Knock on wood. ✊🚪(And I don't have dogs) Another is two safes. One that came with the van that is not high quality, that I keep some money and fake credit cards while my real safe is hidden under the fridge disguised as a vent. The fake safe is for if they actually do get in. They can have 40 dollars if it keeps them away from my real valuables and gets them out of my van faster. Lastly I have cameras, just to possibly be able to give to police as some evidence.

I feel your pain, crooks are around every corner, they see foreigner's as easy targets. I had a friends Van stolen with 2 track bikes worth 50k and some cash in Spain never seen again, they see your plates knowing you are helpless. Sorry to hear what happened, but I would never leave credit cards, passports, driving licence etc in the vehicle. We have had caravans and motorhomes for over 40 years and make a point of never leaving anything important in the MH. The other thing we mainly do now is stay on sites, as we feel safer, especially as we are in our 70's. Take care.

That's rough mate, I'd put another safe in still, but put old expired stuff, a spare current card on top, and a few dollars in it. Enough to satisfy them and let them leave thinking they got it.. Remember cash is flat and bendy, lots of places it can be stored.

@@thebeautifulbeastuk My uncle was a scrap merchants accountant, he had a gorgeous and massive safe behind the counter for years, it was the size of a large fridge with polished brass bits and all, they kept it gleaming. One night some enterprising individuals removed it with a tow truck and the fork lift, took it to a secluded area and broke into it. The coppers recognised the busted safe and told my uncle about it. He wasn't too bothered, he'd never opened it himself he just thought it looked nice. The real safe was just a battered filing cabinet. What was in the old safe? Stones and bricks. Decoy items are great, you want them to be convinced they have the goods and leave fast with minimal danger. Keys, cash, phones.

Security cameras don't leave all valuables in on place hide in side the walls engine bay where ever we invested in high tech cameras that notify you send live video to cell phones. Don't carry all valuables on yourself either if your mugged as we have been the best thing is to have a little cash on you so they are satisfied.

There are Eastern European gangs all over Europe, preying for their victims already on the freeways and highways, they follow you, watch you and hit you when they think their time is right. They work in groups of each at least 4. Watch out for stop attempts by total strangers on the roads under whatever pretext, persons who falsely claim to be police and girls suddenly hugging you while screaming for help. These perps are in almost all cases not the Italians or Spanish or French, or Germans,……. but either crime groups out of Eastern Europe or refugees trying to make a living by robberies. Many of them have knives, so watch out.

As a European truck driver. Its something that I and others have had to deal with over the years. Locked vehicles are no deterrent, so the only safe way is to keep your Cards with you at all times. Never keep more than 100 euros cash and try to find a really hard to find place to keep your Passports and Driving licences. If you are going to the beach then you can swim with your cards. But it is not just in Italy where the scum bags are. They are everywhere. But dont let it spoil your travels.

I got pickpocketed in Rome for €100. Just forget it and move on. We were a group so we could get money from the others. But a hassle to stop the creditcards. Went to the policestation, super nice personell, but as you say, they couldn’t help.

Not so easy to accomplish but maybe keep the locked safe as usual, only leave a tiny amount of cash and some old or useless papers in there, then you hide the real stuff / cards somewhere not easily to be found.....? If the locked safe is empty, then they will know, but if You leave something, they consider you only poor...maybe.

Certainly makes you think on how to improve security so it doesn't happen again, I've seen the Land Rover defenders with the steel mesh guards over the windows etc I've even heard of folks getting robbed while they slept, hope you get the cards and other important documents replaced quickly, you got yourself a new subscriber.

It’s shocking how bad the crime is here, but it’s hardly surprising when the police have absolutely no interest in catching any criminals we told the police station that we had a list of shops and times when are cards were being used fraudulently easy police work if the shops have cameras and these days most do obviously and they weren’t interested I was shocked !

@thebeautifulbeastuk as a youth, I used to work in an Italian restaurant. Many of the Italian staff openly admitted to having dubious pasts and explained it was very much part of the culture. However, I have never had anything stolen during several trips to Italy, but then I have been extremely careful. My main complaint about Italy would be the lack of consideration for other drivers on the motorways. In my experience, no country has more middle lane hoggers than Italy.

Sad to hear. Been all around Europe in our campers and motorhome and the only place we’ve had problems is Italy. Fortunately (?!) caught someone trying to break in (in broad daylight on a busy main street!) as I just got back to it and chased him off. Spoken to other owners who’ve said the same, including some French who had stones thrown at theirs just to cause random damage. We won’t be returning to Italy to tour 😢

​@@thebeautifulbeastuk I know everyone is giving yall advice and well here's my two cents. 😁I'm a weekend warrior that takes short van trips across the U.S. Two things I've learned is dogs or the threat of dogs and a dummy safe. When I first bought my van, it came with a dinky safe that was not the best quality and it was above the cab in plain site. I had a sturdier smaller safe installed under the fridge and bolted to the frame. The safe was recessed a bit so I was able to put a false cover over it that looked like a vent for the fridge. I put used debit cards and fake ID's and 40 dollars in 1 dollar bills in the dummy safe so if someone did break in, they would immediately be drawn to it and hopefully satisfied. I also put signs in the all the windows that says: "Please don't break windows. Dogs are safe, Well-ventilated with A/C " Thank You. (I dont have dogs) I also have some cameras and have recorded people reading the signs & walking away. Maybe giving potential buglers something to consider. 🤞Anyway, that's my spiel. I'm really sorry for the violation that y both experienced. Y seem to have great attitudes about it, keep safe.✌

Here in North America thieves do not break into your Caravan / Camper...this is something one does not have to be concerned with... This is the land of big pickup trucks and they will hitch and or lift your vehicle and tow it away...never to be seen again on the road......
