Perhaps you could interview the park owners and give a less biased report. There are reasons for these rules. Because of the laws in place in many blue areas there is no way to evict for non-pay situations. Some owners also wish to run a higher end park. I personally prefer 55+, no squatters, junk RV's, dogs and children because I prefer quiet and peace of mind on vacation. I look for parks that fit my desires. You have choices, not rights over business owners. I also like pools that are not full of screaming pissing kids, already raised mine.

The age restriction is why we bought a smaller, new RV. What kills me is when you arrive at a RV Park/resort and they have old, unkept (at least on the outside) RVs parked in their parks that obviously aren't moving anywhere. There are only a handful of parks like this. Then you have those parks that try to hide the over 10 years old RVs but while exploring the park you find them. At least here in California. I don't understand why there are restrictions for short term stays but then you see these old, falling apart RVs. Why are they there?!? We have been doing upgrades to our travel trailer only to ensure it's safe and is better than it was when we bought it. And trust me, those with RVs know all of the manufacturing problems that COVID brought on. These new RVs that were being mass produced are crap. Oh sure it looks beautiful when you go to buy it. Then you start discovering all the problems. I thank God everyday for my husband. He was a Journeyman ASE Certified mechanic. He has caught problems before the RV companies have.

Sorry, ma'am, but it's scorched-earth war with snobbery disguised as "throw-away mentality". How these swine must chortle when they sell their 10yo RV for five-figures when they know the buyer will be restricted.

We have no age restrictions for nightly and weekly stays at our park. In fact, if its older than 1970 we give a discount. Vintage RVs receive a discount off the cost of a two-night stay based on the age of their RV. For RVs older than 1970 you pay your year. A 1958 Shasta pays $58 for two nights, a 1961 Airstream pays $61, and so on. The older your rig the less you pay. The regular price for two nights starts at $93. We love having vintage rigs in the park and we want to see more.

I love this idea! And as a newer RV owner, I would totally support the elevating of older well-maintained RVs. If I had a campground, I would love to do the same sort of discount to celebrate The people who have lovingly maintained a piece of history. I love old cars and I love old RVs, I hate to buy anything brand new because I think it’s a waste of money. Especially today when RVs are made so poorly that you could practically fall through the floorboards. I think older RVs need to be celebrated, especially when they have been so lovingly taken care of. I think they should go up and value like an old Mustang or Corvette

That’s unfortunate. I had no idea it was that common. I’ve been looking at older RVs because I’m not a millionaire. It’s sad that even RV camping is now for the wealthy only. I guess they’re trying to keep the “riff raff” (Full time van dwellers, some of whom might be homeless otherwise) out, but it seems like if the RV is in running condition, it’s not a situation where someone is running a lab out of their broken down old camper that’s on blocks. Because it actually functions enough to drive them to the campground!

In 2006 we had reservations at an RV Park in San Diego. We pulled up to check in and were told that we couldn't stay there because of restrictions. Our trailer was a T@b which was quite unique at that time. It was a vintage DESIGN but it was only 6 months old. The 10 year rule was tossed at us. I showed the clerk the title. Still denied and she refused to call the manager. There were no vacancies in any of the other campgrounds and we didn't know at the time how to boondock. Finally, I just refused to leave and told the clerk to either call the manage or the police because I was NOT leaving. A couple of hours later, the manager showed up and put us in a campsite. The sting of discrimination was a useful lesson to me in empathy for others to whom that rule actually did apply.

I tried semi retirement in 2015 w a trip to Florida for the winter, I made reservations for Ocala Fl, paid my first 2 months, upon arrival the very next morning, management showed up w a 12 page contract that I was expected to sign right then and there, without having my coffee, i explained I do no transactions without coffee, breakfast and coffee. The ‘ manager ‘ was indignant, came back 7 mins later and demanded I sign or leave immediately. Without a refund, I called my bank, cancelled the transaction. I went to another campground and was told they don’t accept toyhaulers, but they recommended a campground that did.Upon my 7 months in Florida over that winter I checked out numerous campgrounds as I have done the past. 45 years. About 7% at the time had age restrictions for RVs as well as the vehicle that towed them, Never went back to Florida, I’m a gypsy traveler instead. My home base is Vermont. I should mention I’m 70, I’ve camped for 50 years, I’ve owned 27 RVs to date.

I first encountered this 7-years ago in Pennsylvania. I was able to stay the winter, but was asked to leave in the spring. I was told no long-term spots were available for RVs older than 10-years old. I was told that it was for insurance reasons. I have a 1996 45-foot Newell Coach that is now worth about $85k, but when new it was $900k, that is a diesel pusher with no gas. It is an entirely electric coach except that it does have a heater that can use diesel if not plugged in. My old coach was worth more than half of the RVs at the park I was staying at. I asked if I could store it there and I was refused. I carry upper limits comprehensive & collision coverage and a $1M umbrella policy, and that did not matter. The place I was staying at is Oak Grove Park & Sales in Hatfield, PA. Another group that is restricted from entering RV Parks are the folks that have skoolies, school buses that are converted into RVs. The big problem with this restriction is that why would anyone buy one if the useful life is only 10-years? There would be no resale/trade-in value and if you bought one gently used (under 5-years old), you would a have limited time of use. The RV Manufacturers should be fighting this tooth and nail and parks that have this policy should be boycotted until they change their policy.

Should totally mention the names of the camp grounds. They are never going to change until the weight of the community begins crushing them. You guys have a very large following, and there are other KZbinrs out there that would join in I am sure. Insurance is a cop out if they even try to use it as a reason. They turn down our female German Shepherd more than I care to think about. We give up. If you live near Millbrook Alabama our camper is for sale at Clarks RV Center for $13,995. Your camper and the other older year camper are immaculate. Our dog is no more harmful than a husky or chow but the parks say no German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Dobermans, Mastiffs, Great Danes and Pitt Bulls. People make dogs dangerous. I guess this is sheer horror to the 1% now, to which everyone is pandering. And that's the relevant issue: the stratification of wealth at the top. You either worked for your money or earned it passively through investments; making for unrelateable ghost stories. Wealth simply strums a different folk tune.

We should press the campground routing apps (RV Life, All Stays, Campendium, etc...) to make this a very visible category on each website listing. Including letting people know that there are no age restrictions, as opposed to just omitting the rating. I have a 2020 (not $1.5m) but would be happy bypassing any restrictive campgrounds. Here's a thought about the RV community you didn't mention in your video, and thank you for this video. Many, many people rent RV's, motorhomes as well as trailers to see if pulling one is for them. I know this because I used to sell used RVs. At the time, fifteen years ago, I didn't know about age discrimination in RV parks. I would bet that fact will essentially kill the used RV business. And maybe it already has. We virtually reconditioned every unit we sold, consigned or not. In my lifetime, and I'm 77, I've owned or rented every type of RV there is. And stayed in RV parks around the country some of the time and in mother nature's parks most of the time.

RV age restrictions even more frustrating now considering new RVs are plagued with major quality issues. A well-maintained, 15-year-old coach is likely to be better than something built since about 2019. Pressuring people to unload rigs that are in great shape and paid for in order to use something with worse build quality they have to pay tons of money for seems counterproductive. And big time thumbs up on the environmental impact of pressuring people to buy huge, new RVs when they already have one that's perfectly fine.

I am 74 years old and traveling solo. I bought a travel trailer within my budget means this past January. Was wanting to camp and bring my K9 companion with me. Well, my travel trailer is a vintage 1962 model, it is in very good condition with a decent enough paint job. Not the colors I would have chosen, but nor is it a psychedelic paint job either. In doing research while doing a few minor interior modifications, I did find out to inquire about the 10 year rule. In doing so - before I could ever even hit the road with my travel trailer - I was given two rejections due to the age of the travel trailer (not me lol). My dog is acceptable!! The campgrounds were in Houston and Dallas Texas. I had family & friends there. I wanted to stay for four - five days and visit. That’s it and the rates weren’t cheep either. One place wanted a picture, and I complied. The other just repeated that they had a 10year rule. This has deterred me from going camping a little, and I am very disappointed. I am now having to limit my stays to state parks, burea of land management land, etc. I was hoping for a clean & safe place to stay for a few days at a time, and travel a bit. I will do more research and inquiries as to where me, my k9, and 1962 Tepee travel trailer will be welcomed.

Did you know that there are states that have counties where it is a county ordinance deciding the age of RV's allowed in RV Parks in that county. To keep their business license, they have to comply with the ordinance and not allow RV's over that age stated in the ordinance. I heard of this in the early 1990's. It's not a new thing. If county ordinances can do this, I have also wondered about the park insurance coverage. There may be terms in their insurance not allowing older RV's in the parks. Also, I know that some parks do not allow larger dogs because of insurance. If their insurance says no dogs over a certain weight, then the park has to comply. If their insurance says they can accept larger dogs, then there is usually breed restrictions on those larger dogs. These park owners can't go against their county laws, or against their insurance terms.

Well for me having a five-year-old camper there is a simple solution for this problem. If an RV park ask me how old my camper is, I tell them how old it is and then I refused to stay at their campground because they asked me that simple question. If we would do this more often and refuse to stay at their campground because of the age. Eventually they will change their tune because they will run out of people that will want to stay there. Usually at these campgrounds I always see asking this question there is a golf course tied to it.

Years ago we purchased a 1969 Kencraft travel trailer and spent 2 years redoing the entire plumbing, wiring, exterior, interior, etc. when we were done it was a thing of beauty. All original solid ash paneling, a four burner stove and full size oven, 10 gallon water heater with an expansion tank so the pump wouldn't cycle on and off. the list went on and on. I even gutted the bathroom due to water damage and completely rebuilt it using the original pink tube/shower and chrome finish trim. So sad that some parks are to "high class" to think that anything with age is worthless. Our Kencraft was built like a tank and rode so smooth. They don't build them like that anymore.

What it does have is a few board games, a deck of cards for rainy days, a bike rack, and the essential's to cook over the pit. @andreeahoudini5908 most "homeless" people aren't blessed enough to have so much as a tent to pitch, no pot to piss in, nor window to throw it out. So, those whom are fortunate to have an RV, regardless of condition, are a step ahead. On either front, they should not be discriminated, punished, or looked down upon as lesser humans - as your comment comes crossed. 😢 Not all "homeless" people are so of their own choosing. 🙄 😒 😑 Nor are many able, let alone willing, to go into hock till their great grandchildren are grown to live beyond their means in order to keep up with the Joneses. Before countering with maintenance, blah, blah, blah, that costs money, physical ability, n a generally clear head - which are impacted purely by virtue of being "homeless." Suffice it to say, mental health is the culprit to many a woes when homeless, especially when coupled with the stigmas of homelessness. It's sad to constantly hear such negative references regarding homeless people. It sounds like being homeless is criminal. Well, the only criminal component of homelessness I see is that it exists in a country that is so rich n has seemingly more vacant properties than homeless people to occupy them. I understand that some homeless people are so of their own choosing, or due to poor choices in life. They bare the brunt of paying the piper... That's not the case for the majority...😢 If they are "parked on the side of the road in beat up rvs," I guarantee you it's not their first choice. A beat up rv is better than a doorway, park bench, or bush. This video isn't about homeless or poor folks with substandard rvs, though. If folks of reasonable means n nice, well maintained rvs are restricted, due to the age, can you not imagine why there are those "beat up rvs" on the side of the road? The Park changed hands, (same family older couple running it just retired and passed it to the kids) and in order for the park to get a new insurance policy in the 'new owners' names they were required to evict anyone with a rig older than 25 years. The kids running the place were very transparent that they hated this but because they legally had to have insurance to remain open at all, they had no choice. Unfortunatly that meant I was unable to find anywhere in the region I lived in that would permit a long stay with hookups and I lost my home and had to go back to renting.

The person who commented and who's family has owned an RV park for generations is spot on about the squatter issue. Perhaps what truly needs to happen is campground owners (and associations) in these particular states where the laws work against the Cg owners from getting rid of squatters need to lobby for changing the laws or creating one's excluding campgeounds. Campground sites are more akin to the renting of a hotel room than an apartment or house. A campgeound owner should be able to call a tow truck and tow out a squatter within a much shorter time if the camper fails to pay accordingly or has major system failure that could cause health and safety issues for all involved. This would get to the root of the real issue and fear of getting saddled with squatters or unsafe rigs. ANOTHER THOUGHT TOO...if asked the agent of your rig, turn around and ask the campground what year was their last electrical upgrade? Age of their bath houses and septic systems? Is their pool and hot tub operational and open? Hmmmmm??? Cheeky yes but fair that we expect modern up to date services for our site fees.

I spoke to someone that owns and operates an RV Park, she said that the reason there is an "age restriction" on RV's is not because it is old or ugly, it is because that often people abandon their RV's and Campers at campgrounds if the amount of renewal is more expensive than the value of the camper. Though I was surprised that someone would abandon their campers, it made sense that it could be a problem. I have an '87 Gulfstream Sunsport that has been renovated, so mine is pretty nice and is very solid and I would never leave it. I'll try to be short, but this will help you understand: Our park has no age restriction.....buuuuttt we've seriously thought about it. We are the ones who get sued by all the other campers (who turn into instant Karen's) when things go wrong. It's on our property, naturally they blame us. Today is only June 7th but we've already had one electrical fire and two dark tank eruptions since Memorial Weekend. The campers beside those people, who were put at risk, were not mad at the older RV owners, they were mad at us for letting them in the park. Besides that hassle here's the real issue: Older models are more likely to have changed hands multiple times to a current owner who is unaware of repairs made by a DIYer, and not up to standard. This especially applies to electrical repairs not made by professionals that result in RV fires that risk everyone near the fire, and ultimately the whole park. Water leaks, particularly dark water issues are serious problems. Our park sits on a lake. We can't install sewage within 1000 ft of the lake, so the spaces with water hookup (more than 1000 ft from the lakefront) are booked up first, even though they cost more. The RV spaces nearest the lake (apart from tent campers) in older RVs are where the serious problems usually happen. They can be well maintained but the older they are, can still be on the verge of a serious problem that hasn't happened yet. Dark water requires a hazmat team (we usually have to pay for it because campers are not insured for our property damage or expenses caused) and it also shuts down the surrounding spaces that might be affected, costing us even more. They are shut down until an environmental professional approves reopening. This is ungodly expensive. Electrical fires erupt even when there's no one inside the RV. There is no time to get a fire department to one of these. Other campers and RVs are only 20 ft apart at best. We've also had them get stuck in our park for weeks, unable to pay for a tow out. This isn't a problem as long as they're paying the space rent.... until we can't honor reservations for the space because they're stuck in it. We've also had people abandon a broken down RV in our park, which costs us to get it removed and we have no way to recover all those costs. Just one or two of these kind of disasters are enough to kill profit for an entire year. There's no way to inspect each and every RV for potential breakdowns. The best parks can do to minimize the possibility of a bad experience for everyone in the park is to use an age restriction on the RVs.

The problem is that these newer campers are actually falling apart before they even come close to that age restriction. I have a camper that is older than 15 years and is in pristine condition. We take very good care of it and keep up maintenance, but it’s also very well made. My in-laws camper is almost unusable at less than 10 years old. And that’s with them working on it and getting maintenance done every year. It had issues from the very first year when it was brand new. They don’t make newer campers well at all. They’re cheaply made and deteriorating at breakneck speed no matter how well the owner takes care of them. Unfortunately, any hospitality business has the same huge issues and risks now days financially. It’s a hard business because of that. The age restriction isn’t working to fix the problem, though, you’re just making better customers go somewhere else. I think there should be some sort of program for people to have their campers inspected yearly just like cars are required to have done. That way you know if they’re inspected and passed that the campers are in good operating condition. That doesn’t mean that things won’t go wrong, because that’s just life, but it would mean safer rigs on the roads and in campgrounds. It really bothers me that my camper isn’t accepted in all campgrounds, yet ones like my in-laws are fine because they’re newer. We’re even thinking about getting a vintage camper that’s been completely restored and updated, but it sounds like we’ll have the same issue or even a harder time even though a lot of these antique beauties are doing so much better than new campers, too.
@AngelfromGenX

@@DannaShaffer 💯 true, and that's why we don't use an age restriction. I'm just explaining why you have these parks that make a difference. They're probably newer parks, (less than 20yo) may only open seasonally, and in the business for the most profit. They just want a steady cash business with minimal problems like everyone else, but they'll learn. RVing became a real mainstream activity about 25 years ago and the new campers made in that rush to get in on the sales are revealing themselves.

I am on the road an average six days a month; one time recently a 31 day winter trip. My camper is in the most beautiful condition and the Vintage appeal is outstanding. I have been using and restoring these older campers for over 30 years and enjoy them greatly. Total investment on this one about $4000 for four plus years of use. Show me one of these modern vehicles that will still be around at that age. Only ever had one age problem but that went away after they really looked at it. If it passes all DOT requirements then that should be the only requirement. The problem is the RV snobs that don't feel they should have to be parked next to an older one. Campers use to be friendly, helpful and clean. I can't drive any more and am glad my time is over because the future for us looks sad. I wish you all smooth roads, great weather and a cozy camp fire. I'm new to the community. I grew up traveling in camper vans and motorhomes, but I'm only 3 weeks into my full time life in my 2004 Gulfstream Friendship Atrium. I was rejected from a local (to where my house was) rv park based on 15 year rule. It amazes me, because I drove thru the park. It wasn't any place special. It was clean, but not particularly nice. Most of the visitors were in small travel trailers, and frankly, my coach would have been the nicest there. I have been worrying about this, since I started planning this life change. You make some amazing points about being environmentally sustainable. Most of the motorhomes I grew up with were already decades old. Prior to my Gulfstream coach, I had a 1983 Roadtrek versitile 190 that I absolutly loved. She was beautiful, and still has decades of life and travel in front of her. I am currently in a park with a 20 year rule... which they are fast and loose with. I'm hoping not to have too much problems with this. I do have clear coat to repair on my coach, but I and my fur babies are settling in for the long haul. Thank you for being real about the situation.

You are 100% correct that this is discrimination against those of us that do not have the funds to buy a new RV or something that is under 15 years old. The only qualifiers were passing a credit and crimminal check. You could not be disqualified because you wore old clothes or had a classic car parked in the drive. Even with photos and validation of its age, they said no. We ended up in all occasions, literally camping down the road, at the next facility, who were more than happy with us being there. Charity it's a little more complicated than just age, it also involves type of Rv as well. My family have been RV park owners for over 70 years in a town that is a favorite destination. With regard to age of RV, we do have a 15 year limit imposed in the last 4 years. While we have Manager's discretion clause on admissibility the real issue is we have RVs showing up that are on their last leg and the owners intend to park that RV and never leave. When they stop paying rent and electricity for weekly or longer tenants they game the system knowing that an eviction process is required in this state (squatting). Once the judgement is issued to get them out (4 months later) they walk away from what is a pile of RV junk and now it cost $4K to have the unit declared abandoned and re-titled so it can be removed legally. This happens way too much and has become very expensive, so the rule was put into place to reject any RV that didn't have a reasonable market value based on condition or was 15 years old or greater unless the condition exception applied. Every RV is inspected for full functionality before it's allowed into the park for more than a night or two. Units with obvious issues, in other words tenements on wheels are rejected regardless of age. Old units that are clearly restorations or in stellar in condition are admitted no problem. Now on another issue, this RV discriminatory practice didn't just start with RV age, it started with Class A only resorts which personally pisses me off. My personal Fifth-wheel rig is over $250K, young and in like new condition but I'm not allowed to be in the same park/resort as somebody with a $50K FR3 class A. Now let's examine that. I agree that someone should post a list of RV sites that have RV age restrictions. The consumer speaks loudly and I’d want to know.

Agree totally this has to stop. Ran into this myself. My RV was 12yrs old so I lied and said it was 8yrs old. Didn’t question me when I pulled in. My RV looks as good as the day I took possession of it, and stored inside all 4 seasons.

I agree. My first experience with arrogant RV parks was when we were traveling with a brand new popup camper. "Sorry, only Class A motor homes allowed." Now we travel with a 10+ year old hybrid camper. It's in pristine condition with new decals and canvas. If they don't want our business, fine. Honestly we prefer military campgrounds but everyone can't do that. We also have large batteries and an inverter generator so we can boondock too. We have crossed the Country several times since I retired five years ago. Most campgrounds are 90+% filled with full-time residents. People are living in campgrounds, not travelling full-time but living in a camper stationary. In California and similar regions RV parks are always full so they can choose the big money customers and I can drive right by.

My parents had an older Winnebago that they purchased used. My father was a mechanic so he had no doubt that he could keep it running. I am so glad that they did not experience this type of discrimination.

My cousins had an 18ft Hi-Low. They were banned at many parks sight unseen saying they were “pop-ups”. They warned me many moons ago of the age & type discrimination in the industry.

For rv parks to have this ten year rule is just outrageous! My wife and my policy is screw them! We go elsewhere! We own a tiffin motorhome that’s ten years old but looks like the day we purchased it! My god these rv parks should be boycotted! Who’s going to start a website that begins the boycotts? Let’s name them All and pass it around!

It's been our experience that the age restricted campgrounds are usually the higher priced options, so we avoid them. While a boycott might deter some, elitests will want to go there to avoid us "trailer trash". I'd rather avoid those folks anyway.

Why are you so worried about a few parks that don't allow older RVs. There are plenty that do allow old RVs. KYD was just at an Airstream only RV park and I didn't see a single comment about how outraged other RVers were that they weren't allowed in to that park. Some restaurants require dress codes and they can deny you if you don't comply. What's the difference?

Completely agree! I have seen new RV's that have not been maintained and look worse than some older models. But there does need to be some kind of system to keep run down RV's out of your park and that can be new or old RV's. At the park that I live in, the focus has always been on how well an RV looks and nothing else. So if you spit polish your old rig and it's not falling apart, you are welcomed in.

You're not alone. I have a classic 1989 HMC Hawkins Motor Coach 31 foot Class A motor coach. It was $225,000 in the 1980's. It looks better than most of the newer ones in Parks and campgrounds. However, I finally found a great place. Thousand Trails RV Resort. The South Beach Oregon location will take a look at your rig and give you the okay or no. There's not a really strict policy here.

Everybody loves to talk about the memories both good and bad from their home. Apparently some rv parks don’t like people to have good long term memories

I get the rule’s spirit; and I have NO PROBLEM at all with sending in pictures of my rig to show its well maintained and clean. I’ve stayed in campgrounds that let ANYONE come, and I’ve seen more than one run-down, dilapidated and abandoned RV’s with ratty tarp roofs and half rotten plywood windows surrounded by half torn apart dirt bikes, random bicycle parts, and junk kitchen appliances. I’ve also found these “neighbors” snooping around my rig at night. There’s a certain hard-drug using element that these rules keep out, and that’s a good thing for the safety of our families and security of our property. What’s ridiculous, however, is a zero-tolerance 10 or 15 year rule. There should always be exception made if you maintain your rig and send in photos. Especially with how awesome retro/restored vintage rigs are and solidly built older rigs are.

if I were a campground owner, I would encourage vintage RV and camper owners to come to my campground. Like you said some of these older models are literally works of art on wheels. The love and care that is embellished onto these classic models shows by the pride, the owners having them. The fact that they have been updated to still be used for their original function as a testament to their craftsman ship, and to the owners who maintain them. I would even go so far to set up different sections in the campground to where people that had 50s and 60s campers camp together. 70s and 80s campers the same. But only if they want to. Make each section fit to the time where you can park. I can’t help but wonder do they have a restrictions on vehicles at the campground? What if someone owns a 57 Chevy coupe? Are they not allowed to park it there?

I have a new cargo trailer that I made a camper out of it. It is two windows two doors air conditioning nice bed inside so they told me you can’t bring it there because it doesn’t have an RV nameplate on it from another manufacturer. My cargo trailer built stronger than any small trailers built. It built like a shark cage. Thanks David

Within the last week I had been planning our stops for our annual trip from Middle Georgia to Michigan's UP. I try to change up where we stop for our overnights on the road each year. When I was looking this year, I came across a campground that said if your RV was over 5 years old you would have to send pictures before your reservation would be approved. I was surprised as typically I have seen many saying 10 years. I don't remember the campground but I passed on that one and reserved a nice looking with good reviews county park campground closer to our travel route.
