We couldn't pass up the price on this unrestored 1961 Volvo 544 so we're back to load it on the trailer and bring it home to the shop. This is one of those cars that could go one of two ways... leave it stock OR customize it from head to toe. We're not sure which direction to go on this one 🤔

This car is a real treasure. They were one of the best conceived and built cars of the 60s. The best thing to do with it would be to restore it with what original parts you can find. They are great driving and handling cars that should not be changed. Tom McCahill did a road test on one for Mechanix Illustrated and described it as a peppy car that cornered like "water through a hose". A great buy from an unusual guy who had the good taste to leave it as he found it.

I restored mine about 15 years ago. Put 444 taillights on it and modded the dashboard. Drove it everyday for 5 years. Good reliable cars but kind of boring after awhile. I’ve owned all the vintage Volvos. Probably has a B18. Put a B20 in it and keep those valves adjusted you will like it more. Good luck. BTW I lowered mine a few inches as well and painted the wheels red (body was gray) That’s all you really need to do to make them look cool. Handled a lot better as well.

I owned one of these from 1972 until 1983 when I had to sell it. These are gems, and I remember every bolt. I rebuilt the engine myself at 17 and it ran another 75k. It was still running when I sold it, but it needed a clutch. I hope to god it doesn’t get chopped up.

Chad, I am a sixty-eight year-old who has always been a great car lover. For more than 50 years, this Swedish Volvo model has always fascinated me as much as the beautiful American cars. This 544 is a work of art as it is in the same way as Joline's magnificent Corvette. I do not want to diminish your skills as a cartransformer, nevertheless in my opinion it would be very regrettable to transform it... This jewelry deserves you to rejuvenate it with love, retaining all its assets such as chrome moldings, headlights and original bumpers. It's a small treasure of the automobile. Offer her a beautiful painting at the height of her beauty. My greetings to both of you! Michel Desilets, Ville de Québec

It's a beauty. An old friend had one and swore by how reliable it was, and they are definitely cool to look at. I think just some maintainance and a few upgraded parts for the brakes and suspension, plus some buffing and cleaning and you're good to go. If you "do" make some resto & mods, I don't think it will lose value, cause I haven't seen any bidding wars on these, but I would keep the original "vibe" of it.

It would sure be nice if they went back to making real cars again , instead of the cheapo's made today . They make more money on parts sales than they do on auto sales now days . But I think that's the plan .Too much greed and not enough quality . I love to see these old gems get the attention that they deserve . Fina is a cool dog too by the way . Love to see her in the videos as well . Have a good one Chad and crew ! I agree with others , keep her original as possible . That's a cool looking car IMO .
