We Had to Leave our Boat...Here’s Why

I'm a 74 year old retired mechanics teacher. It sounds to me like your problems are mostly rooted in the electrical installation part of the build. Also, carbon fiber brings with it a lot of new electrical issues. Carbon is a conductor so your hull is a big wire. When they wired your boat up it needed to be treated and insulated like a steel or aluminum hull. It sounds like the installers didn't understand that part. The fridge wiring is a good indication of the skill level involved. In essence, everything metal needs to be isolated from the hull with some sort of electrical insulation including your ground tackle. As far as your isolation switch to your two engine batteries, it sounds like they are not isolating. Again, the installers have screwed up. Something isn't connected properly. Time to look at the wiring schematics and start tracing wires. I hope this helps.

I am a former yacht-Distributor for Fountaine Pajot, Beneteau and Elan. This is a classical case for a purchase return process. There is not only a warranty of two years, but also a warranty of 10 years on construction failure. At least for boats build in the EU. Ask your money back, because all metal parts on board are allready destroyed.

I'd be looking to get my money back and let them keep their boat. Even if they solve the stray current issue, the damage already done will be felt for years to come in everything that is made of metal. And for them to replace everything that is made of metal is likely more work than building a new boat. If they give you a new boat, they still can't assure you that you will not have the same problems (even if they are to a lesser degree).

Good luck with that. I feel really lucky that HH refused to let me on one of their boats at a show. (I bought something else). I'm the guy who figures it out when everyone is pulling their hair out, (except, engines and electronics.) Again and again on sailboats, and probably non sailboats as well -- there is no clear bank of knowledge. I bought B&G to upgrade my old radar and chartplotter. I've sailed long distances, 24 hours of watches, for 4 months on boats using B&G - I'm completely flumoxed by a lot of it, never figured out why on one boat we could do one thing but not on two other boats. The manual? If you set out to write the most useless manual ever - the B&G manual is still worse. Contact B&G? Good luck. They've not responded to me even once. Again and again I've felt completely on my own figuring out things. Other areas? My washing machine at home? There are several sources of information and trouble shooting. I can order a part, then strip down the machine, replace that part, clean up a few things, put it back together and problem solved. On my boat? Something like that might take several days. The companies make this stuff, they start selling it before the bugs are worked out. Then they oversell it, promising the moon, and the margins are so tight that they can't really afford to recall it or fix it. So they'll make suggestions and then play out the time it takes them to respond.... until hopefully you give up and go away. I'm really sorry this happened to Nikki and Jason. If this is allowed to happen to KZbin stars, what do you think will happen to the rest of us?

Last thing you want is delamination in the carbon and end up like the submersible that went down to Titanic, it has become a lemon, and they should take it back and give your money back. I believe the issue of stray current damaging the hull and other metal systems is a real one. I think the boat is totaled. They (HH) should take the boat back and refund your money. The problem is a lack of bonding. I am a bonding specialist in aviation. I also installed avionics and electrical systems on aircraft. All electronics and electrical systems must have their chassis bonded electrically together, the spec on aircraft is two milliohms (.002 ohms). This should have been a consideration during manufacturing. Composite panels on aircraft are bonded with conductive material impregnated in the panel. Bonding is important to discharge static buildup. It is complicated now with boats with multiple electrical components and systems. Especially on a sailboat, sails moving through the atmosphere develop a static charge. If this seems complicated, it is. I would start with a bonding buss for all electrical components. This would a thoughtful design and professional installation. Again this would only be a start to attenuate the “stray current. Good luck, Best Regards, Dan.

Dan is correct. This is a known issue with aviation. HH should take the boat back, go through it, find all of the bonding concerns, fix them, then produce a new boat for you. You have been so gracious with them and their quality control failures that were unfortunately predictable. I wish you the best and hope that you can come out the other side with a better boat. The technology is there, the application was poorly executed. I appreciate that this is a prototype, but I worry about when the failure occurs in the middle of the ocean with you two out there alone. YES, I just spent 2 weeks troubleshooting a UPS that would reboot when the generator power would transfer in. The manufacturer wanted 7,000$ to chase. It wasn’t software or configuration. It was a neutral to ground bonding strap that was removed 2 years earlier when where trying to fix a different problem. the bond was present on utility At the transformer. On generator the transformer isn’t there. You have 2 systems. They are looking for a complex problem, it is something simple. Bonding, bonding, bonding.

This isn't a bonding problem. Systems in a fiberglass boat are bonded together. Airplanes don't float in corrosive, conductive sea water, so they don't have the same galvonic problems a boat experiences.

Starting over is not a great option. Finding the root cause and refurbishing the boat is likely faster. But supplying a replacement would be a good public relations move given the media exposure. IE get this one back on the water while they build a fresh example and then trade.

You or HH should pull the fridge an put on an isolated power supply and see if it still alarms. If it doesn’t it means the alarm is due to the stray current issue. I agree with other comments, no way you can trust this boat, who knows what buried metal part will snap under load 2-3 years from now in the middle of the ocean….long after HH warranty has expired.

I understand not wanting to jeopardize your relationship with HH by publicly calling them out while you're still working to get them to make you whole on the huge investment you made, and while their sales and maintenance team (who may genuinely be people you like) are still trying to work with you... but that boat's a lemon and it should be scrapped, not repaired. Even if you fix the stray current (which is a huge if), there's just no way on a machine that complex that you're going to cost-effectively find every critical part that's now got 40 years of accelerated corrosion. Guarantee that there are bolts, valves, switchgear, thru hulls, and lord knows what else in hard-to-see places that are now well outside of tolerance. And if you've got stray current, plus all these other electrical gremlins, who knows what electrical issues aren't manifesting as visible issues right now that are never the less going to be a problem in a storm, 1,000 miles from shore, a year from now. I wouldn't trust my life on the workmanship of everything else that hasn't yet shown up, given all of these issues. You'd have to strip the thing back down to the bare hull and rebuild it from scratch. It's just not worth it. Extending the warranty is a nice gesture, but you bought a new boat because you wanted a new boat - not a functionally 40 year old boat full of gremlins in dire need of a teardown/rebuild that's gonna spend the next three years mostly on the hard getting warranty work done to make it functional. Make them total it and give you your money back. Go to a different manufacturer, and be done with it.

I hear you and I am sure HH will test the integrity of their Hull with full transparency(they don't have much of a choice really but I am confident they will go over and above without hesitation for their customers)...as the Hull is the only thing they actually physically produce. As for all the other things they don't produce that are optional attachments to their Hull...are HH really to blame fully for the short comings with other manufacturing companies, or the contractors that installed them? In reality, isn't HH a new small company starting up and trying to be competitive in a market with lots of fancy modern options at a good price for the sailing enthusiasts? I used to be a telecom technician, and our aerial and underground plant was subject to stray current electrolysis, so I had a bit to do with it at one time or another. The way to track down your problem is to isolate all of your circuits, and remove any unnecessary permanent links between them. For example, do not connect your engine negative rail and your lightning protection and especially not to the house batteries, and certainly NEVER share a common earth between your house batteries and your starting batteries, ESPECIALLY if they are of different output voltages. Use DUAL POLE relays if it is ever required that heavy current draw equipment such as winches and windlasses are connected so that they are completely disconnected immediately the item is turned off. Do not connect your lightning protection to your radio or instrument earths. THESE instruments all need to be connected to one common INSTRUMENT ONLY earthing system. Your engine alternator puts out three phases, which are converted to DC power using a bridge rectifier using four diodes. Phase imbalances should be no problem as long as the rectifier is the ONLY output the alternator has connected to it. This one is important. Check to see if the alternator wiring uses an initial field activation system where the starting battery provides the initial starting up magnetism for the coils in the alternator, and if so, that it is properly connected to the starting switch. It should be wired so that it disconnects the moment the engine starts and the switch is released from the START position and goes to the RUN position. If this circuit does not disconnect, or the activation circuit is permanently connected to the RUN position, the full unregulated EMF voltage of the alternator is possibly bypassing your regulator and possibly putting unregulated high voltages of up to eighty volts or more into your system. Alternatively, it may be draining your batteries non-stop and passing it to earth even when the engine is not running. ALWAYS USE GASEOUS ARRESTERS TO CONNECT YOUR ENGINE AND AND MAST AND METAL RIGGING ETC TO YOUR LIGHNING DISCHARGE PLATE. These are gas-tube isolators which switch on as soon as the voltage applied reaches, say, 100 volts, and discharges continuously until the potential voltage difference to earth falls below the release voltage of maybe forty volts where the discharge PD is no longer sufficient to maintain any current flow. They are a low pressure gas discharge system but can carry quite high currents, and operate with an audible "Pop" when your mast reaches sufficient potential as to maintain passage of current to earth. A SERIOUS STRIKE WILL INITIALLY OPERATE THEM AND IF IT IS TOO LARGE WILL ARC ACROSS THE ELECTRODES AND THEY WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED--BUT HOPEFULLY WITHOUT DAMAGE TO YOUR VESSEL Make sure, and this is a biggie, that when your anchor windlass relays are installed, BOTH cables are disconnected, and not just the one positive, If you do NOT disconnect the negative, you just turned your anchor and chain into a sacrificial anode with the full unregulated output of your alternator AND battery when engine is not running at all. Always ensure that any shore power entering your vessel does so through an isolating transformer or a similar isolating device, or your vessel sitting in salt water becomes the preferred earth for the entire shore power safety system with the obvious predictable results on your own anodes and equipment. Something to give you some thoughts--I hope it is helpful.

Yes with so many contact points between the sea water and each and every metal part on the boat it is no wonder there is "potenial" for this to accur. I truely hope HH can resolove this. But to me this is not a new issue. Sea borne vessels have been around for so long this should have been of no suprise to the builders of your cat. One of the oddballs (in my mind) with boats is a best practice is connecting AC ground to the DC ground. I've never gotten a decent explanation for this practice but experience with wiring both power and networks and specifically hassles with different potentials between neutral and ground and cables acting as antennae collecting volts makes me think this just can't be a good idea. I had the start switch/alternator wire problem on one of my old tractors. It was back feeding and draining the battery down overnight.

Curiosity is your home and I can only imagine the stress that you feel, but if its a tiny shred of consolation, personally speaking, one of the things I like about your channel is that you do go off and do other things, sometimes by choice and sometimes not quite so much. Canal boating in Wales, touring Florence or hauling out for months on end in New Zealand for example, you two always manage to make something interesting to watch. Chris here from the NZ Electric Boat Company - we supply Combi hybrid systems so this is a very educated guess, not an uninformed comment. I would suggest looking closely at your data networks, for example if both engines are supplying NMEA 2000 data then their "separate" 12v batteries could be linked together via the power wire in the NMEA 2000 bus. Check where and how power is being injected into the NMEA2000 network or CAN bus. It's novel for two of these hybrid systems to be on the same boat, perhaps both sides have N2K power injectors when only one of them should? Or it could be that there is a link between them via the throttle controls. One might assume that amount of current would just burn out the power wire in the N2K cable but if the cable is sufficiently long then the resistance of the wire itself could be regulating the current to a level which doesn't melt the wire. And then... it follows that perhaps your voltage regulator is sensing voltage from that same power wire, so the voltage drop caused by the excess current going over to the battery on the other side would cause the voltage reading in th wire to be much lower than it is at the battery and that would cause the batteries to be overcharged.

i have a custom performance cat with very close specs to the wynns. i basically built my own modelled on the HH44. theres nothing wrong with the basic design. but unfortunately HH made a few mistakes. HH44 is a production boat but they messed up in several areas. mine works perfectly BTW unlike the wynns. i use a lithium only design. my starting batteries are also lithium. the reason they used AGM was Beta recommended AGM start batteries for obtaining warranty and working with the Beta alternator. I removed the Beta alternator and asked for a blank alternator with charging circuit removed. This maintained my Beta warranty while allowing lithium start batteries. There was another issue caused by this which beta didnt help with but i wont go into it, anyway its fixed on my boat after a year. Carbon fiber is conductive so the fasteners MUST be with non conductive spacers. I used plastic spacers to make my metal to carbon fiber contact a non issue as the circuit is broken. any holes for the screws MUST be pre-drilled, filled with spoxy then redrilled. and then the screw goes in with a plastic spacer. Metal resting on carbon fiber base is a battery - This was the problem with the wynns anchor and chain. I used simple GC50 gelcoat on top of carbon fiber in anchor storage and along the anchor chain path. This solved the issue with my stainless anchor and chain (i have the same chain as wynns but i used a rocna vulcan instead of the v2 anchor they used). The victron unit causes a boost to dock voltage. This was solved by using a DC to DC convertor with a programmed trigger voltage for charging causing a voltage pulldown before hitting the boat. HH still has not solved this. Basically there are a bunch of other smaller issues (aluminum tabs, isolated e-bus, DTS, T fuses etc etc) which can be resolved easily if you bother to think about it in advance. This is why I never buy production cats and instead roll my own. basically easier to just buy the bare hull and have a yard finish it to your specs. HH has very good quality control -- just poor system design. dont blame the QA guys - they did their job and fit and finish is superb. blame the idiots who designed the systems on the thing.

By watching the videos of the final assembly stages and pre-launch, I was not impressed by the materials used and by the overall quality of the finishing. As an industrial and yacht designer I worked in a “yacht boutique” in Italy and we had totally different standards, think about “Spirit Yachts” for a fair comparison. You can reply “HH44” is a production cat. True but a 1.4Mln production cat and their standards are quite far from that price range. Just my personal opinion of course.

Jason I’m having a red flag go off in my mind. Since you’re having this much erosion on all your metal parts. I absolutely think that all of your wiring and connectors are toast. I think you have way more problems that must be addressed. If any wire or connector shorts out it may cause a fire. The alarm on your refrigerator although aggravating is probably a good indicator that there is an electrical issue. Please be diligent and have everything looked at.

The alarm on the fridge even after he fixed the shoddy wiring, the batteries exploding, the anchor and chain disintegrating before their very eyes, metal ALL over the boat showing signs of electrical stress, it's giving many indications that something is horribly wrong. Thank God there wasn't a fire while they were out on the water. Yikes!

Those "issues" led me to budget 1 year close to home/dock to work out the kinks and complete after-market projects. Q1: This is amazing. Let`s sail the world. Q2: OMFG, what did I get myself into? Please burn down! Q3: less second-guessing of the decision. Issues are getting sorted & there is solid progress. Q4: Started travelling. This is why we bought into the dream. It`s amazing! A tip for teathing issues, it helps to pay out of pocket to get experienced trades with fresh perspectives onboard. A boat under warranty doesn`t mean you cannot seek independent advice and carry out work by trained pros. I hope the teething issues are nearly over for you guys. I'm actually following all these channels that are getting brand new boats to see which ones have the most problems. Ruby Rose, Delos, Wynns etc. Letting them test the systems before I decide on a new boat in a few years.

It seems many of the channels with new boats (Ruby Rose, La Vagabonde, Travel Sketch & Wynns) are having significant issues with their new boats. What really matters is how the companies deal with the issues and any long term impacts on the boats. It seems out of Rapido, HH, Seawind & Leopard that HH and Seawind seem to be the best in trying to make things right with their boats. One does have to wonder how responsive they would be if the issues weren't shown weekly on widely seen KZbin channels. At some point after the stray current issue is resolved, you should get an outside marine surveyor to do a complete inspection of the boat with an emphasis on everything metal on the boat.

The Rapido trimaran is the worst I have seen given the cost. It's horribly uncomfortable and poorly designed. I fear for the safety of the family. Yet, even when you think of everything, it can go wrong, as Nicki and Jason show. I agree that having a huge KZbin presence helps move builders to respond. Ruby Rose 2 had three major problems and a hundred little ones (like a clock not being screwed on straight) The big three were 1. Poor davit design (not technically a problem but does make life a bit more difficult) Seawind pulled it out and replaced it with a better system 2. Sails chaffing and wearing - caused by lazy bag material rubbing on the sail. Seawind replace both bag and sail 3. Solar panels delaminating. - Seawind replaced under warranty. So yes, Ruby Rose 2 did have problems but Seawind dealt with them in a collaborative manner and fixed the problems immediately. Technically they didn’t have to replace the dinghy davits, as the owners would have known the style that came with the boat, but they did it anyway. Meanwhile the Wynns have solar issues and HH hasn’t moved quickly to replace them, unlike the experience Ruby Rose had. As a business owner I know that reputation with the public, especially in a niche area like sailing, is everything. HH has really dropped the ball and the brand damage is increasing every day. Just look at the comments. Nobody wants to buy a new or second hand HH now.

Have been through an extremely similar situation that resulted in an electrical fire, 2 year court case and a painful truth; it does not matter if the electrical installer is "approved" or not by the equipment suppliers, and I used one of the most well known marine suppliers of these systems, the truth is that there are FEW electrical installers that understand how too make this type of system work - it is way beyond most installers ability and despite the clear installation instructions supplied by the OEMs they still screw it up. The only way out of the problem was to engage an extremely experienced electrical systems engineer (yes an electrical engineer not an electrician) from The Netherlands, who also happens to work extremely closely with both Victron and MG. It took a year to fix from initial inspection and resulted in ALL of the new wiring being ripped out. I cannot recommend both Wim & Cees from New Energy Today highly enough.

Devastated for you guys, what a mess. I would agree with the many commenters saying that HH should buy this back. You paid a lot for a new boat, but your boat now potentially has multiple compromised systems and parts. Metals, wiring, engines, electronics, carbon hull, rigging, through hulls, chain plates. I can’t see how they can rectify this without basically stripping everything down to bare hull and rebuilding. I’m guessing HH probably does not have a million dollars in free cash to buy the boat back.

So just a few thoughts. First, i would hope, want, demand HH cover all your housing rental costs until the vessel is certified healthy. Next, given all the issues, i would demand they extended the warranty period, to start from when they certify the vessel completely healthy. Next, i would want, demand, a signed document from HH stating what the issues were, the fixes they put in place, and certification that the vessel is 100% healthy at the time of handover. I would also include in that document an agreement to refund all monies, and compensation for loss of income etc, if any of these issues return in the adjusted warranty period. Lets be clear, HH have a LOT to lose here, given your online profiles, you certainly have more "pull" than the average purchaser of their product. Understand i'm not saying it is a bad product, but i do feel perhaps rushed into general production without adequate testing, which you are now providing for them! I'm 110% positive you are on top of all this, but WOW, the phenomenal expenses incurred by yourselves whilst all this gets sorted. Can only wish you safe journeys, and a great resolution, not a fast one, as i think meticulous attention to details is now warranted. Understand your need to escape from the stress and leave it to HH. Personally i would want them to transport the vessel back to the factory to be gone over completely, every piece of metal to be replaced, even the engines replaced given the sludge, which has to be detrimental to their long term health. Good luck to both of you, Go visit Eddy Merckx bike factory, check and see if the Ghent six day bike race is on, you'll love it!

I was a marine sparky for over 20 years and was invoved in many stray current problems back in the 80's and 90's, mainly because I was one of the few that had a Galvonic Probe back then, and I can tell you that this problem has increased over the years as we introduced more electrical equipment into our boats. I spent 8 hours on one boat tracking down the problems and the owner was amazed to find out that I found 12 different problems on that cruiser. With good test equipment you can find the problems, hopefully HH will get all of them fixed for you, I can almost guarantee there is more than one problem. Very disappointing, but this unfortunately has become the way of the world, too many labourers and not enough qualified tradesman. I really hope you/they get this sorted.

I have been with you guys from the beginning and you have encouraged me in my nomadic journey. Hey Wynns, your year has had lots of expectations and hopes. And they are well founded because there are a lot of good people with heart doing their best to deliver an awesome boat for you. There is a lot of heart and pride and science and energy from the HH team as well as other teams, everyone else who makes the engines and batteries and refrigerators and ... everything in your boat. And from you as well. The heart and pride and good will of everyone is good, from what I see. But you've faced some challenges, experienced valid reasons for worrying about your safety. And you've experienced some disappointments and frustrations, that maybe felt pretty deep. I'm mostly impressed with your resiliency, graciousness and thoughtfulness in facing and overcoming issues, obstacles. And I'm impressed with your efforts to team back with everyone at HH and others to understand what is causing the issues, how to fix them. Your teaming to sail, troubleshoot issues, understands them, help resolve them is a reflection of heart, pride and good will ... as well. Sorry for your tough year. All the new boats are having issues. Sitting in salt water add an additional from motorhomes. I watch it because of you two. The boat is just a prop. Good luck, and thank you for sharing.

What legal steps would you take? I'm pretty sure the warranty didn't include a clause offering a new boat in case of problems. You're stuck with whatever resolution you agreed to in the sales contract. Caveat Emptor.

Having a trawler for years, raised four kids cruising the great lakes and down to NY, when you said we are buying a sailboat and we are going to travel the world, I asked you if you were crazy, but you did it and did the right way. Agree with Don Harmon. I am a retired engineer. If the issue with the refrigerator is a clue, wiring should be a suspect. I did not hear you mention a galvanic isolator, or even better, a galvanic transformer. Do you have that installed (you should). If it's there is it working properly?

I just searched *_galvanic isolation transformer ups_* and holy smokes! There's way more stuff to know about for electrical systems in general, let alone for marine systems.

Could be a number of things. Based on the fact that this is happening on anchor, an iso trans is probably not the cause. More likely a grounding issue or something energizes ng the hull. Find the amperage, and start taking systems loose one at a time till it goes away. Then trace it down. I'd hate to see the inside of those betas.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I’m sure with 1,700 comments somebody has said this, but - I feel quite strongly that you and HH should agree on a 3rd party surveyor to assess the stray current damage. This will absolutely require some disassembly - I would not be comfortable taking that boat to sea without doing some disassembly inspections and maybe some X-rays. I’d start with the standing rig and removing a chainplate, and I’d probably take off one of the shaft P-brackets for a look, and if your rudder stocks are metal I’d drop a rudder. Don’t recall your steering system, but definitely open up a few components for a look inside. Of course any heat exchanger on any device is likely vulnerable - check your hot water heater, etc. Fluid cooling circuits for the rotating machinery? I’d also seek out expertise on possible impacts on the carbon mast and how to inspect for that. Best case here is that you were really on top of the anodes, and no infrastructure parts were damaged. But it’s a lot better to know than not know.

Thinking the same thing, new design, new factory...is it just this one boat? HH needs to get a skilled team together to do a top down assessment, personal experience, electrical problems can be from multiple points.
