Old burlap sacks or moth-eaten used Army wool blankets, tied to ropes behind a tractor, ATV, or tolerant horse, and dragged around everywhere, will pick up virtually every burr. Then you burn them. This tip from my late father-in-law who cleared 80+ acres of burrs.

@@TheFarmonRoute66 I'd love to see if it helps as much as my FIL said it would. You have to do it several years in a row but eventually you won't see them. The old wool blankets are probably harder to find now. Old clothing is supposedly in great oversupply now, so maybe you can find alternatives.

Forty years ago I bought a 7 month old filly that had Doc Bar in her pedigree as well as a few other quarter horse greats. We named her Doc Bars Saucy Socks. She was a golden palomino with white mane and tail a white star on her nose and 3 white socks. At 2 years old I put a halter & lead rope on her & jumped & laid across her back. She turned & looked at me then went back to grazing. So I threw my leg over and sat there. She turned & looked at me again. She acted like she could care less that I was on her. So I reached around & tied to loose end of the lead rope to the other side of the halter & gave her a little squeeze. We took off k like she had been waiting for this day. I could walk into the pasture & whistle. Her head would come up, she whirl around with her head & tail held high and run to me at top speed only to whirl around butt first a few steps from me. I would scratch her. The more I’d scratch the lower she would go until she was laying on the grass. I could set on her stomach while scratching her and she’d lay there as long as I’d keep it up. The most remarkable horse I’ve ever been around

Cowboy Magic makes a great detangler. I have used it and it still takes some effort but the burs slide out (with some patience and picking). We spend time in our pastures chopping out the cocklebur plants before they make the burs. After a few years attention to that process we have almost no burrs in our horses manes and tails.

I had Goat Heads on my ranch. No problem for the horses, but my Springer Spaniels suffered terribly with them. It took a few years before they didn't come back. Had to get them before they went to flower. hate those things!! Then there's those weird corkscrew things. I forget what their called. They're straight on the plant, but when you pull them off, as they dry they turn into a cork screw. Kinda neat the way nature works.

Best use to remove stickers, burrs, sap or tar, use a good conditioner or grooming oil and also can use a grooming comb. Work the oil in little at a time as you work out the spurs and for harder to get out add more oil. let it soak in. Also another trick to avoid the mess is braid the mane & tail. Hope this helps. 🐴

when we moved from Alva, OK to Kentucky, my Dad brought his registered quarter horse mare. The only stud in the area was a registered albino palomino so he bred his mare and the palomino 2 times. He got 2 buckskin colts which became mine and my brothers horses. We had those horses for almost 18 years Our neighbor had a unregistered quarter horse mare which was bred to the same albino palomino. They were like triplets. We had many good years with them. I really enjoy your channel-brings back a lot of good memories.

Before you cut them off pour a lot of baby oil in the hair and work it in and leave it and the burs will soften up and you can pull them out gently use a ton of oil and the burs will eventually fall apart you have to leave it in for several weeks and just keep putting more in when you see it drying out it takes so many years to grow back a mane and tail

Hi Alan, I saw your horse w/ a roached mane and recalled when I first started showing horses at a young age in a 4H riding club in the 70’s we all roached the manes on our QH. Thankfully It changed after a couple years and we only roached the Bridle Path. My horse was a two eyed Jack mare descendant passed down to me. She was like riding a rocking horse, smooth in pleasure and excelled in halter and all around ranch horse w/a big beautiful heart…I always felt safe and trusted this horse more than any I’ve ever owned. Oh my goodness I just saw the cockleburs 😬 a healthy dousing of mineral oil softened it up on my llittle filly. I’ve learned to braid preventatively cause so much work! Good luck Alan🤞🏼

I often used spray-on hair conditioner on a matted tail or a tail or mane with burrs. I also use a very wide tooth comb and start at the ends. I also use conditioner on both mane and tail whenever I bathe them. That helps to keep the hair smoother so the burrs are easier to remove. Finally, I try to eradicate any burr producing plants. I know I can’t get all of them but I try to keep them under control. You have very beautiful horses and your love for them shows.

Unfortunately unless a horse has a show record to back up her breeding, she's not worth as much as you might think. I used to think that way, but unless you get points on them, it won't mean much. She might have some value as a broodmare, but then you have to breed her with a well known champion stallion with stud fees north of $10k. Sadly AQHA is all about big money. Priced me out of showing again

Greetings from the Mountains of North Carolina...! Today I have a "correction" comment for you....but first, I'd like to say how impressed I am with the horse rescue aspect of your farm. So great that the family is so into it....and your wonderful gentleness of nature and voice is a real plus for all the animals that come to you for care. Now, the correction that I would like to share, pertains to something I heard you say a few weeks ago. I thought that it may have been from speaking fast on camera...or just not paying attention....but then I heard you say it again today on this episode ! When it comes to breeding horses....if you want to be true and correct..... a horse is "OUT OF " the Mare.... (the Dam) ; and " BY " the Stallion.... (the Sire). Busted out laughing when I heard you say that little 'Miss 66' was 'out of' your stallion...!!! One of the best ways to deal with the "burdock" plant....is to go out into the fields during the summer....and chop them down before they bloom and make the 'burs'. It's a big job...but after a few years....no more burs in manes and tails...!! One last thing....all Appy's and even Appy Mixes have a " short scrappy " tail....!!! Good Luck - Take Care - Stay Safe

When I had horses over 10 years ago, I used a product called Laser sheen. It came in a quart bottle that you added water to so that quart would make a gallon of the mixed product you sprayed on your horse. It sure made quick work of getting burrs out of manes and tails. The only thing with is, you have to be careful not to spray it on their back or barrel area if you wanted to ride. It made those areas very slick and shiny and impossible for a saddle to stay put lol. I thought it was very cost effective since I was on a budget at the time.

Horses are always exciting to me! I had cockle burrs terribly, and would attach to any kitty and had to be cut out. A yard is handled differently than a pasture but every couple weeks I would walk around my yard and dig up any seedlings, put them in a garbage bag and add them to the garbage. If they were in flower, I was careful not to knock them around and cause the seeds to drop. After a couple years they were almost gone. I kept looking for them for years because the seed would blow in from other yards. Babies have somewhat different leaves than adults so get to know them. No cat would stand for all the hair pulling when I tried to get them out, so they got shaved. Maybe you could enlist your kids to walk or ride with you. They are tall, so that makes them easier to find. I never used herbicide because it does something to the soil that ruins it. Everyone gets a big garbage bag and pruners.

I used to be a dog groomer and I raised Arabians, we bred for the show ring, so any way the best tip I can give you for taking out briars and such is to get a good large ✂ ✂. Hold them open just as seen here in the icon. begin at the top of the tail or mane and pull downward to the end of the hair. You will have to do this many more times to loosen the hair ball, but at some point the hair will separate from the briar's and you will be able to comb it all out. I learned this as a dog groomer and have used it many times on the manes and tails. Hope this tip helps you get those mats out it does work really great. Best wishes and love the horses you have.

The black spot on the haunch of that chestnut mare is known as a "Bend Or spot", named after a chestnut TB stallion, Bend Or, who won the Epsom Derby in 1880 and had these black spots in his coat. I don't know if I'd breed a 15 year old mare that had never foaled. Might be asking for trouble you don't need. The only way I know of to reduce cockleburs is to get on an ATV pulling a cart early in the season and routinely chug around your pastures, uproot what you find, throw 'em in the cart and haul them off somewhere to compost or burn. Takes up time, but so does yanking them out of the manes and tails of your horses. We used to soak the burr mats with baby oil and leave them for a day before brushing.

It makes manes and tail soft an shinny. Got it from an older timer many years ago when showing horses. My friend at cross timber bison Uses a spray in the spring time to eliminate burrs, & if U would braid there mains & tail it will eliminate the majority of burrs sticking to the both. Love your video's. I grew up with Clides/morgan mix. & learned to ride on them. Thanks & God has blessed.

When I was growing up, I had a mare that was from driftwood, I can see from both of your mares, Lex and Chipper, the muscle tone and withers the similarities are incredible. My mare was a great horse, no spook, or buck can stick kids on her no worries. miss her ,she would be 51 if still alive hahaha

The only thing I know about horses is I think they are beautiful! Truly enjoy learning about them and watching your videos. I still don’t understand what you mean by top and bottom We have cockle burrs in Oklahoma. Homesteaders spray pastures Eradicate them

Donna Lawson people have a top and bottom ancestry. The top would be your father's side and bottom is your mother's side. Consider that your pedigree.

It is funny how when in a drought every body prays for rain. When we get the rain we pray for. Then, everyone complains about it. Just be thankful and deal with it. God Bless 😊🙏

Silicone spray works good at removing the burrs. Wear latex gloves to save your hands. When done wash mane & tail. Had a gelding with a tail that went to the ground, came home to a tail that looked like a paint roller.

Our dogs are always getting those burrs, they are the worst! You did a great job getting them out. This video is actually super interesting to me, just learning so much about horses from you. They are beautiful!!

They are all lovely horses! My favorites right now are Miss 66, 66 and Penny. Hope you keep Penny. Most human hair detanglers, like Smooth and Silky will help ease the burrs out, but on our ranch in California we always made time to either dig out the bushes when we found them or carefully burn the bushes if they were big and there was like a stand of them. Totally worth the time and effort.

I am prejudice to Palomino's. Years ago we had a registered quarter horse named Ligtning Dan Too. He was a stud and was rode in Lapeer Days parades, good comformation, very tall, and exceptionately gentle even around little ones. We also had a mare quarter horse named Poco Del Bear who was gentle, rode western or english, and threw beautiful foals with Dan. We had a total of 3 registered quarter horses plus Lightning Dan Too and a shetland pony. We miss them but after our girls grew up they needed more attention than my husband and I could give them. A nearby farm that worked with handicapped children got them and the horses loved it there. Miss them still.

Not long ago I learned to use that lubergunt w-44 D or something like that you probably know what I am talking about. But if you spay it downward and comb bottom to top it slicks the hair and conditions it as well as makes it shiny. Hope this helps. My favorite has always been Chipper but Miss 66 could catch her. But the boys are gorgeous!..God bless

I used hair conditioner (strait from the bottle) rubbed into the mane and tail to get the cockleburs out. It worked very well but did take some time.

All are beautiful. I know I kind of like peaches because she looks alot like mine did. I had to sell all mine because of back trouble and it made me sick. But the fellow I sold her to bred her to his stallion and she threw a beautiful daughter that looked just like her mom. I love your horses and you videos.

Best solution for us has been to cut the plants down...but I find that spraying down with conditioner or a shosheen type product, and then start pulling through with a hoof pick...Marie sure the sharp end is facing away for horses neck

I had a Doc bar mare. Docs Jessie J Tivo. She was hard to ride. The black mark on your one mare Jessie had one also. Some one said it's the mark of Doc Bar. IDK about that. I traded Jessie for a 4 year old best horse I ever had. Sight unseen. My heart horse Saige.

It's been years since I had horses. I had a paint mare that was bred to a Driftwood stud. Beautiful paint colt built right and his head was perfect. Now I could be wrong... But the man who owned the stud said Driftwood goes back to King and that's what he was breeding back to. He has since passed I hope he made his goal.

I made the mistake of plowing a field that had some cockleburs. They germinated and instead of just having a few spots of them I had a pasture of solid burrs. A disaster.

3 grand is not bad. A ranch I worked at raised throughbreds and 20thousand plus was their going rate but the prettyest horse I ever saw was a regesterd 1/4 horse cutting horse that was black with a gold sparkel that would shine in the sun he was pretty I watched him at the trainers and he was good but you better hold tight because he would cut on a dimeall and all I still love my leopard appaloosa
