It seems more and more prefer using meds to solve problems instead of love, doing what’s best for the pup or human and training w/ love for what you’re doing. Seriously!! My neighbor said the school wanted to give her child meds to keep him quite. He doesn’t like to listen but MEDS, seriously. She never gave n and he still doesn’t listen to well and he’s now 12 but medication should only b used if it’s absolutely necessary. Not a way to make someone else’s life or job easier. 🙄 Good luck Renee. Just another reason I’m so glad u all adopted Pollux. 🥰

How ridiculous! That you have never had issue when you took your dogs to the last groomers that owned that business...now all of a sudden your dogs are "difficult"! I call BS. This is why I have been taking my dogs to the same groomer for 17 years. She grooms them from her own house & never holds dogs in kennels. She does one at a time..& she only does small breed dogs. I love her as a groomer...& my dogs have loved her. It has never been their favorite place to go...but, they have never been afraid to see her. It speaks volumes about the groomer & dog relationship. ;) Ask around to your friends & see who they take their dogs to...the best reference....is word of mouth from people you know. :) I am the same as you Renee...1 time I cut the nail too close to the quick...& I will never do it again...Although, it stops bleeding if you make a mixture of cornstarch & water to make a paste & cover the quick. it stops the bleeding. It always looks worse than it really is. I just don't want to do it....so, I leave it to the groomer now. OMGoodness! That was an expensive visit! Yikes! :(

You should look into getting the talking board, that Bunny the dog, uses on TikTok. They’ve taught her to communicate by pushing word buttons on this board, that speaks. Usually she asks to go outside, play or go potty. It’s funny, she asks her mom/dad a lot of potty questions. I was wondering if it was real, but you should watch it to see what you think. I think it would be cool to see Maxxie and Pollux using the dog, talking board, to see them communicate.

A very good system exists in Germany and has for a long time now. No one is permitted to open certain types of businesses without prior experience, proper training and licensure that requires passing exams and demonstrating proficiency. It is a bureaucracy and to some a nightmare, but it prevents fraudsters and incompetent bozos from just setting up shop. Germany takes their professional reputations for quality and precision very seriously.

Two and a half weeks later the bulb blew out. Back to the store but this time I said do you have any light bulbs that aren't made in China. Yes, we have German bulbs but they cost a dollar more. I'll take it. That bulb lasted four years until I sold my car. Truth be told it probably is still going strong.

I'm 47 years old I've been a groomer since I was 18 I don't care how bad a dog is I have never ever ever sedated a dog! I thought that was against the law it should be! You have no idea what people's dogs are allergic to!

I can't believe how unprofessional your groomer was! I worked for a groomer in CA and another one in MT. Neither of them would have allowed us to give up or charge more for toe nail trimming. NEVER! If a pet was afraid and resisted, we helped each other by holding and calming the pet.....KINDNESS always!!! If it took longer for some pets - SAME CHARGE. We were the experts and our job was to protect and get the job done humanely.

I have rescued 75 street strays. Before that I worked with horses for 19 years. So I have tons of experienced grooming, halter training, OB training, teaching dogs to accept baths and nail trimming. I use a nail rotary tool rather than nail clippers. I started by just getting them used to the sound and vibration, then just touch their nails to it. I use peanut butter as rewards. I never hold the tool on their nails for more than a count of 5 because it gets too hot if you hold on longer. Soon, my rescues would fall asleep in my arms while I took care of their nails. Lots of PB, lots of patience and time. I used to buy horse rope (sold by the foot for less than .60 cents per foot) and vaccines at the feed store. I made my own rope toys by tying knots in the cotton ropes. ( Buy about 5 ft per toy) The vaccine prices have gone up over the years but it is still under 10.00 to buy them and give them myself. They do not even feel the shot because it is given just under the skin. My old pal, who has helped me rehab all these foster dogs is about 17 yrs old now. He's a rescue so we do not have an exact birth date. He is very arthritic. I give him a shot 1 time per week and pills everyday to help with his pain level. My vet says he has another 2 years of quality of life. I hope so. He has been my heart dog since 2006. So keep trying with the rotary tool. I have found dogs tolerate it a lot better than clippers. There is something you might try with Pollux. You put them in a jacket and hang them from a doorway so they are suspended up in the air. MANY dogs handle this well for nail trimming. Google it. What I used to do is every time they are sleeping next to me, I start touching their feet. Gradually with time and patience they get over their touchy feet problem. Some of my rescues were 9 year old puppy mill momma rescues who had been mistreated and on wire floors for 9 years. Lots of PB and patience. Use a calm low voice. Turn on some calming dog music on your PC. Visualize them falling asleep while you file their nails.

Hi, they only way I found to keep my Winston ( huge 35 kg white English bull terrier) nails down is walking on the road/ concentrate paths , Winston just like Pollux and hates his feet being touched, sometimes when I am giving myself a pedicure I can snip the odd nail of Winston with human nail cutter, Winston dose not leave my side everything I do Winston like to help 😂 but it’s not the best , I have quite the collection of dog nail clippers / sniper files he even knows the sound when you open them and runs away but can’t hear when is called inside 😱😂. I love your channel . You keep me company , I been growing my hair for 2.5 years we must have started the same time so nice to star 2021 with lovely longish sliver hair xxxx

Nails are a universal problem. Neither one of my dogs will let me trim their nails. I've tried the grinders and several kinds of nail clippers. Now I just take them to the vet. I obviously don't have a magic formula. Love your videos.🐶🐾❤

Thank you for being understanding about the vet bill... as a vet student myself I know that vets often get anger from clients who think that they charge too much, especially in the UK where human healthcare is free by comparison. The overheads of a vet practice are huge so the price the vet has to charge is as much of a bugbear to them as it is to you. I’m sure the vet was grateful that you take such good care of your boys and keep on top of their ears and claws ☺️

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the groomers. I’ve always taken care of clipping all our pets toenails since they were little. I think it makes a big difference that I started when they were young, and now they’re all used to me doing their nails. Good luck finding a new groomer!

Totally understand your situation. We had used a groomer for several years, but the last time, we had a novice groomer. No mo! Someone posted a question on our local FB marketplace requesting recommendations for groomer, so we found a new wonderful groomer! All is good for our little lady.

I have to admit that as soon as you said the new owners knew nothing about grooming a red flag went up. They know nothing, will hire anyone who presents themselves well, for a low wage & have zero clue if the person can do the job. Then they have the nerve to jack up the price & who knows how they were treated while you were gone! I feel your pain!! It's so hard to find good groomers & good vets! I agree with you, if they don't know how to work with pets then they don't need to be in the business!! Yeah, my dog needs someone to cuddle him while his nails are trimmed... they tell me he is such a cuddle puppy~~ Nope, I don't dare even try to cut my dog's nails... too scared I'll hurt them! Forgot to mention Dog Grooming Schools. There's always someone there to oversee the students & the rates are very reasonable. The downside is that the openings are pretty limited so getting in is difficult.

My dog hates nail clippers and has been a challenge to trim. The older he gets, the harder his nails have gotten so now I use a Dremel to grind them down. This is much less stressful to him and I both. I have him lay down and I grind a bit off each nail, then the next, switching nails on one paw and repeating until they are all done. This keeps the nails from getting too hot from continuously grinding the same one. He does quite well with this and actually seems to enjoy the interaction!😊

When we had our first rescue, sweet, quiet Samantha. We took her to the groomers. We'd been there before, no problem. This time, it was different. She couldn't walk well, she slept the rest of the afternoon, which wasn't like her at all. It was my husband who first thought about sedation. She could have DIED. They did not have our permission and when we confronted the owner, she lied about sedating Sammi in the first place. Needless to say we found another groomer ASAP. Our dear vet recommended a groomer to us and she was great.

I have clipped my dogs nails. With Pollux, I would try giving him special treats when he allows you to touch his paws. Do that for a bit, then try picking up his paw and reward him for that. Keep on doing that until you can check out his toenails and cut them. I have always found reward based training has worked the best.

It's not easy but worth a try to do it yourself in their calm, familiar home environment. My poor labrador boy had to have several claws surgically REMOVED because unbeknownst to me his thyroid condition had affected and weakened them and they had started splitting and were in a very bad state and really hurting him :( and after the surgery trauma his paws were so sore that he was just terrified of having his claws trimmed, even the experienced claw clipping nurse at the vets couldn't get near him :( BTW Your vets in the US charges seemed cheaper than mine in the UK were! I tried a nail grinder like the one you have but as soon as he heard it he wouldn't let me anywhere near him no matter what I tried, even with it switched off. The only way I managed to get near his paws and clip any was by extremely slowly, going back to absolute basics, just get him sitting, lift paw, gently touch/inspect his claw, give treat. Leave him be. Get settled and sitting again. Touch another claw - treat. All calm and quiet, not getting worked up, lots of repetition and patience, like training. Then very very gradually moving from that baseline to touching a claw for a short moment with the manual clipper, nothing more than that, give treat. I did that regularly, then slowly moved to opening the clipper and 'holding' the claw, but not clipping, give treat. Patience was the key, and not trying to push it, ever, because it would cause things to go backwards. He had to trust that I wouldn't hurt him and he was extremely anxious that it would hurt and would wince, whine and yelp for no good reason but obviously he was so fearful. All in all it took me about 12 months of this 'reprogramming' to get him from the initial fear and total refusal stage for me to even touch his claws to eventually carefully clipping all of his claws (slowly!) with lots of treats every time, I was so proud of him getting over his fear for me, and thankful that I had managed to get him to stay calm enough and not have to be sedated at the vets, which is not only stressful and anxiety inducing but very expensive and for me not an affordable option!

Keep serching. Find one with some patience that has been doing it for a long time and has alot of expierience. You have work ahead of you. Good luck, from an X-groomer of 32 years. Make that grinding fun for your dogs and try to make it fun for you!

Hi Renee, our furrbaby is 10yrs now, never has been able to have her nails groomed but at the vet!! Very sensitive paws!! We tried sooo many groomers, ourselves, grinders etc not even 4 people could hold her! Lab/pitty/mastif mix. So we give her a sedation pill hour before we go, 5 min she's done! She goes on walks, plays ball every day, but hates sidewalks, arthritis in hips, joints I think it just hurts, so mostly grass! Luckily pet insurance pays for most! Love Pollux & Maxie, understand your dilemma! 🤗💕🐾🐕 You might need to keep Pollux, at least, with the vet. 😕

My husband trimmed our dogs toenails since they were puppies. I always did the grooming (one was a schnauzer). Our youngest is 16 next week...a little deaf but still goes right to the treat cupboard after getting his toenails clipped!

I’m so sorry about your groomer. I have a Boston Terrier and we clip his nails after his weekly bath with a regular nail clipper. We bathe him in our laundry room sink ourselves. He turned 2 years old just recently. Hope you find a good groomer soon! Hugs💕

My pug that's passed away last Christmas had a fetish about touching his toes there was no way so I used to take him to my vet and even some technicians had trouble but they had some people in there that gave him a bath and did his nails at the same time and that seemed to work

Hi, all of my dogs have never had their nails clipped. I walked them 1 hour or more and in the late evenings in México City, so it's mostly sidewalks and as possible grass , we all enjoy it. Labradors, dobermans, French poodles, and lots of rescue strays around 30 years of dogs.

Finding a great groomer is like finding a great plumber! My chihuahua needs nails trimmed every 6 weeks or so. I’m paralyzed on my left side so cannot trim his nails. Gabby my groomer has $5.00 drop in service. She’s awesome! Good luck in finding a new groomer.

Get Bell and Howell paw perfect dremel. The one on tv. No smell, different round sander attachments. Have new rescue and can do two paws in under a minute. Took me a few weeks to perfect it. Be patient.

I’ve recently moved my cats to a new vet as the old vet was really rough with handling them and naturally neither cat appreciated it so they acted up. I told the vet exactly what I thought of him and his skills and that they had lost my business and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone else. My new vet is lovely, they understand animal behaviour and don’t force treatments on them. I’ve heard lots of stories about awful groomers and glad I haven’t got that worry. Hope you find a new groomer soon as both Maxxie and Pollux are angels. Are you giving Maxxie a birthday party?

You may know this already but the longer the nails get the cuticle expands, so you have to trim them a little bit more often to safely get them to a shorter length. My dogs have black nails so I totally get it on being afraid to cut them yourself. I've accidentally made them bleed a time or two even when just taking the tiniest bit off. Would suggest asking on nextdoor.com if anyone can recommend a good groomer, or even in a really nice area nearest you for a mobile groomer.

We got our cockapoo during covid when the groomers in our area were closed. Out of desperation, I purchased a grooming kit online. I have become pretty good at grooming but can’t do the ear hair. Ringo finally had his first professional grooming done and my husband said he liked the way I did it better. I think I’ll do the in-between groomings going forward with seasonal full grooming by the professionals. Love your channel and the way you interact with your sweet dogs.

Had a Vet assistant to THREATEN to hurt my impacted cat, just out of sheer evilness bc my cat IS difficult to deal with bc she is mortified of vets! And I had actually LEFT my cat there before. I told them that day, enjoy this big, whapping payment today bc you will not ger another from me, and you'll never have to worry about touching MY cat again!! The poor cat was in agony, RENEE. And the vet tech threatened to torture her, in FRONT of me! Imagine how she was treated when i had HAD to leave her, in the past. I no longer leave my cat ANYWHERE unless she requires hospitalization for days, which she never has.

You might have to travel to the next town to find a good groomer. Ask your neighbors for recommendations too. Mobile groomers could be a good option, because you can see how he or she treats your dogs, but they’re generally more expensive. Good luck!

I have that exact same grinder. My fur kiddo has the most ridiculous growing nails I have to grind them weekly. Big tip - walk them first. Nice long walk. Then when they are worn out and lie down after they are much more receptive to having their paws messed with. Sit with them and grind them one at a time, massage their pad a little in between - make it a "special" thing. Also with the grinder you are not likely to ever make them bleed from the quick - if you get near the quick they will get sensitive and start yanking their foot away :)

Smell probably as it heats up. Do a couple at a time. With great treats and time..... You could always dope up Polix yourself with sedation but I wonder if there are some natural foods that are calming for dogs? Good to visit you. The lavender looks really good with those curls. Renee, I am so happy you did not consent on having the boys sedated and good riddance with those groomers! It is stressful when the company you have relied on for years all of the sudden are gone. Here in the condo complex, I very often see a groomer in a van pull up and is specially useful now during covid. Poor Maxxie had sore ears? But I am proud of Pollux for behaving with the vet while doing his toe nails. Love to see the boys. Have a good day!

My Great Pyrenees is 110 pounds, shelter dog. Her vet had to sedate her for the simplest intervention. She really didn’t want to do it. But... this is a large, powerful dog we didn’t want to create new stressful memories. Yes, most dogs don’t like to offer their paws. I walk her on hard and soft surfaces to keep nails short. Because I failed to pay attention to her dew claw in the first few months, it became infected and had to be surgically removed. I felt like a horrible dog mom. So now she’s scheduled every quarter to get all nails trimmed etc, under sedation at the vet. I keep try though and she will allow me to file just a little and it takes days to get her nails filed. You’re a wonderful dog mom!

My dogs hated the pet nail grinder I bought years ago. I bought a Dremel grinder, put it at a moderate speed, put my dog up on the workbench, and did their nails. At first they hated it and fussed. Now my last little girl doesn’t love it, but she allows it. I personally prefer to do it that way because there are no sharp edges on the nails.

Poor babies! Glad Maxxie and Pollux will not go back to the “Nightmare”. Probably saved them from a horrendous situation! My husband grooms our schnauzer. It’s not the easiest job, but at least we know he’s not mistreated. It seems you can’t trust anyone with your babies!

Renee, I have never been to a groomer with my dogs, but toenail trimming is very easy to learn. Ask your local shelter or vet to show you how it is done. All you have to do is buy clippers. And for the bathing? Do you hav e a shower? Use it. I used to cut the fur of our family dog, a berner mountain dog/Giantschnauzer cross. He was big and after trimming his whole body, my hand really hurt. My mom now has a pekinese/chihuahua cross that also need trimming, but because he is so small, it is easy. If you have an affection for hair, as I have (i am Not a hair dresser, I am pushing buttons in an office, but I cut my own hair,because I was disapointed one time too often), there is no miracle in trimming a dog. Try it, the dogs don't complain.😉😉

I have 2 rescues who are terrified of nail cutting. You can buy those snips (similar to the ones you held up) that have a guard on them, that stops you cutting more than a certain length. It just means you have to trim the nails more regularly but you don't ever cut too far. To get over the fear of the nail trim I introduced some high value treats. I bake Pilchard biscuits from a tin can of pilchards (size 425g) - the pilchards are in a tomato sauce (whiz it up in a blender), add an egg, one cup of flour and twice bake them to make them crunchy. First bake as a slab until firm on top but soft in middle and bottom, then cut up into small treat size, turn over and bake again until crunchy. Dogs will do anything for these treats. If you do one nail (which might take 30 to 45 minutes with a nervous dog) and they get several of these super special treats, then do the next nail the next day - over a period of weeks they start to comply more, reduce your treat to one biscuit per nail then over a period of months you can do them all yourself without even giving a treat eventually - though one treat at the end is a nice positive thing to do. They are not scared of the snips anymore. I don't bother washing my dogs unless they are muddy.

It is crazy trying to trim my Marcus’ nails. Front ones get so long so fast! I was having the vet trim them, but since covid it’s been harder to get an appointment.The file noise terrifies him, and he won’t let me touch his feet to clip nails myself. Out of desperation I invented a game based on an idea I saw online. I got some course sandpaper and used strong glue to attach it to a dollar store cutting board. Here’s the game: I put a kibble of dog food or a little treat on the floor, place the sandpaper board over it and hold it in place. Marcus will dig on the sandpaper to get the treat, which files his nails some. He gets rewarded frequently and he loves this game! It’s not foolproof but it really does help between trims.

I tried but I’m scared and I’m sure she knows that plus I tried n the beginning and I cut her and I said never again. She has nails that not only grow fast but they’re black and the back ones r very close and difficult to cut, even for the techs at the vets. I have to take her to the vet as well and it take two techs but they’re good to her. Covid is causing problems n that area as well.

@@sandraoaks7887 Yes! Marcus has black nails too! It makes it so much harder. I had to teach him to play the game by taking his paw and scratching the board, then giving him a treat. He caught on pretty fast. Tilting the board a little helps get the nails in different spots. Just don’t play for too long or toes can get sore. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Ha ha ha, Sounds like our whole life. Our dog can only be groomed a tiny bit at a time. I love you and your channel. By the way - the grinding mechanism may have gotten hot and that may be why he reacted after 3 nails. Love how Maxie jumped down when he heard the noise.

Hello from Dennmark, Scandininavia, Europe. Love your videoes. And your lovely accent. Are you guys texans. My family in the US is from about every else but Texas. Love it!! Love how you got your eyes on Pollux from a familiar tragic story, actualy into a happy dog life. Got my ft. springer spaniel nr.3 . First 2 with no grooming problems. My now no. 3 will have nothing to do with my clippers, electrical or otherwise. Claws fur in lumps. Will take him to the Vet and get him sedatet medical. Don`t care what people think. Cat goes to the Dr. where the techs snip her claws, weigh her, and give her a good petting to feel for any lumps or bumps I may not feel ( numb hands). Cat is gentle, healthy, and doesn't claw furniture.

I’m glad you got the dogs out of there before something bad happened to them. My dog can’t stand to have his paws touched. I have to have the vet cut them too. We go every month. It’s $17.00
