I love the New Forest! When I lived in London, a group of us used to camp there. The walks & horses are so beautiful! I’ve lived in 2 places now where the nearby farmland was subdivided. The last one, hundred of neighbours banded together successfully protesting to change the road to being a normal size and tiny blocks to larger blocks. The council also put in walking trails that link up to existing ones too, so a sort of win for both sides. Good luck with the coming weeks!

I’m so excited to see your new home. I live in a city in the state of Alabama and in the 60’s it was all farm land and now it’s the largest city in the state. A US army base was established and took up a large amount of land and now a lot of US organizations have moved here and brought a ton of people. Unfortunately buying a home now is much harder for new families and all we are seeing is apartments being built everywhere. It’s a shame because it’s such a beautiful area with the start of the Appalachian mountains. All the surrounding mountains are being cut into with roads, homes and businesses.

I think where I live (in the southern US) we are trying to pave over everything with concrete. Where is the wildlife going? There are coyote sightings near my neighborhood, which makes me nervous to let my cats out. There are deer in folks' backyards. Just craziness. Some of those last houses you showed from a distance, they looked pretty big with no land around them. Here we call them "MacMansions," being snarky, a big house sat on a postage-stamp sized lot. Often so close together your neighbors know what you are having for dinner.

New builds leave me cold. Everyone is different but I would rather have an older house if I could afford a home. Live on a narrowboat the last 13 years and it suits me. Even terraces have character. Would want a fireplace, upgrade the insulation levels, probably add internal external wall insulation and under the floors. Wouldn't be adverse to building a new home using reclaimed bricks like an octagonal or round brick toll house with round central chimney with stone mullioned windows or cast iron window frames. Modern cavity wall but the character features in an old style. Be interesting to see what you have bought! My Grandparents have had a Georgian Grade 2 listed end terrace, the oldest to a cottage in Herefordshire to terraces of the Victorian age to the Edwardian, plus 1920's bungalow in Cornwall to 1950 bungalow in Ireland plus older properties in Normandy and Calvados, France.

The land is taken away everywhere. Makes me sick to see all the farmland being taken away! We need the farmers and produce which they give us. Greenhouse vegetables and fruits just aren’t the same as grown outside in the natural sunshine. Children are not going to appreciate what real nature is. Just a bunch of houses all clumped together. Or where we are, Condos going up everywhere there is a tiny space. The beautiful countryside outside of the city is basically gone. But we do have protected areas which we have to fight to ensure they stay that way. 🇨🇦

Building mania: It’s especially tragic when they do it to farmland. As you say, once it’s gone, it’s gone. It takes centuries to build up arable soil. 😭 No new housing close by me, but that’s simply because I’m close to the city center; this was the “new housing” in the 1920’s, with relatively small lots and houses. (My plan when I bought 25+ years ago: a place I can deal with as I age.) But definitely it’s happening in smaller towns commuter-distance away from here, especially with people working from home. And more rental units than places one can buy. Not built by local companies - some have no tornado shelters, which is dangerous! Like the movie multiplex built maybe 10 years ago, by a company who’s HQ is down south… they didn’t check on the weather here (weeks with a high of -20°C in winter). They had people stand outside to buy tickets, and no heating for the ticket sellers. They opened the theater in January. 🤦♀️🤣🤦♀️ My brother is out in Seattle WA, and he says out there, they’re building apartment block after apartment block, all empty, created by investors as tax shelters or something, with no real intention to ever actually rent them, unless someone is willing to pay more than the space is worth. 🤦♀️😭 Meanwhile, despite all the “new housing,” home and rental prices are still crazy high. 🙄

City Government does not build houses here. They give building permits to developers but there number is restricted to what is required. Or private individuals buy a lot and build their own homes. Very different here. Because developers can not afford to build houses to have them sit empty, they sell before they build, in most cases. Governments just controls how many permits they allow. I was so happy to hear you say that the New Forest is at least protected. It would be devastating to have those lands slowly taken for more empty houses. I am looking forward to seeing your new home / project. Ronnie in Saskatchewan

One of the things we’ve seen here in Texas, especially with small towns close to the larger cities is an influx of new housing being built, and the infrastructure not being up to par, for traffic, and especially water, we’ve had droughts in the last few years…Last year the town we live in was under severe water restrictions with some part of the city not being allowed to water, and this was in the middle of summer. A couple of years ago, a big company came in bought several hundred acres and built dozens of homes, though they aren’t for sale, but for rent. It really changes a town. Young people tell us old timers, it’s the price for progress, and while we all love a little progress, when it hinders saftey, and the quality of life, that isn’t good.

Now everything is housing and anytime a house on a large lot sells it's demolished and multiple houses built in place of it often whole blocks are purchased by developers and huge apartment blocks built in place of a few houses or a business. The ultimate tragedy is this valley was once one of the most productive food baskets in the world now it is technology headquarters. I am so excited to see your ne home and watch you renovate it into a magical show place.

Time to get out the GPR and geomagnetic sensors (BBC Time Team detectors) and run those fields and meadows for ancient habitations, archaeological artifacts, even some buried ancient coin hordes. Luckily the areas in the county where I live there are many zoning restrictions. Minimum acreage restrictions some being not less than 10 acres, some not less than 2 acres. We also don’t have public water and sewer in many of our towns which definitely restricts high density housing because each property has to perk for individual on-site septic systems and well water. In the United States, each state is different and each county down to each town creates their own zoning restrictions. Of course land and homes become pricier where there are those restrictions. Hate to see the English beautiful countryside disappear. Citizens need to get involved. ❤

Hi Carole, Adrian and Beth, I am so sorry about the housing development. I am happy to see New Forest is protected, it's so beautiful there. The animals can keep their home as well. I am looking forward to seeing your new place, I hope we don't have to wait weeks. Love from N.Y.

Yes, the development is going on like crazy everywhere. I live in a suburb in Florida, and my little community is fighting a townhome development just across the street from us that would completely change the character of our neighborhood. It's currently zoned for two single-family homes and the owners want to get the zoning changed to build 20-25 townhomes on it. There's been another one proposed for some land belonging to a nearby church, just on the other side of the community next to ours. The government seems determined to push "affordable housing" into traditional neighborhoods of larger single-family homes. Our city used to be known as a tree-friendly city, but now they seem to want to mow down every bit of green space we have and every historic building in the name of affordable housing. We are having many of the same problems with illegal immigration as is much of the UK and Europe. The federal government has been strategically placing pockets of these illegals all over our country. They have no interest in assimilating into our culture, only in imposing their culture onto ours. It's causing major problems. Skyrocketing car insurance premiums because they're being given driver's licenses when they don't know the rules of our road, rampant violent crime, and a shortage of housing that wasn't a problem before. U.S. citizens who have rented the same places for years are being kicked out by their landlords, because the illegal immigrants are being subsidized by the federal government and can afford to pay higher rent. Exacerbating the housing shortage are these commercial property-buying ventures that want to buy up all the houses and rent them out to people. Meanwhile, we have many war veterans living homeless on the streets after the veterans' administration has failed to properly care for them. If our elections go the wrong way in November, it's only going to get worse.

Yes this is so sad to hear but I fear it will only get worse!!
To many neighbors for me. Don't like neighbors peeking in because they are too close.

It is happening all over…gobbling up the land…private investor firms buying up housing to then rent out at astronomical prices …no affordable options for elderly at all in US …seems a good ok boys handshakes between local government, real estate developers etc and who cares about the community of citizens!!!! Just tax us for their pleasure spending our money….gotta come to an end …this from Oklahoma..but back where my views in Pennsylvania rivals your country charm and open spaces…same is happening!! Can’t wait to see your new home!!

Way way too many houses. How will you be able to pee in your back yard 😅 Try and buy a few extra acres a year. Keep farm land I really do not like noise

I hope you have some acreage of your own but like you surprised of the massive amount of development despite the fact that 200,000 derelict homes in the UK sitting empty maybe not in the nicest of areas but gov't can't leave towns empty to build on farmland. Is why I would never vote Tory or Labour as they both have no clue whatsoever what they are doing. Some developments end up bailing even before they finish leaving places sitting and communities wondering and floundering. I hope your new home works out for you and you have enough space that you need. I know you don't want to do much I am betting Carole will want to put her stamp on it so.....

You sold La Ferté and then moved into a council flat back in the UK. Now a new house?
@gailkoprowski31773 ай бұрын
They already owned the flat. Lived there while looking for the new house. Had to come back to run the business.

Sadly it's going on everywhere. But, they aren't looking at the pressure it's putting on our road's or services.
