We are moving into a post - post-modern world But what does that look like and mean for truth - and us as pastors - as we attempt to communicate with our churches?
Our church members have unconsciously adopted some of the presuppositions of our society in the way we process texts and information.
We are living in a fake news world on social media with a parallel loss of confidence in institutions and authorities. Prince Harry says, ‘Whatever the cause, my memory is my memory, it does what it does, gathers and curates as it sees fit, and there’s just as much truth in what I remember and how I remember it as there is in so-called objective facts. Things like chronology and cause-and-effect are often just fables we tell ourselves about the past.
Former US President Barack Obama says “Unfortunately, too much of politics today seems to reject the very concept of objective truth. People just make stuff up. They just make stuff up. … we see the utter loss of shame among political leaders where they’re caught in a lie and they just double down and they lie some more. Politicians have always lied, but it used to be if you caught them lying, they’d be like, “Oh, man”. Now they just keep on lying."
Moore Theological College Lecturer Lionel Windsor joins Dominic Steele to explore what it means to believe the truth, turn to the truth, and adopt habits of truth and faithfulness in a post truth world.

I found this interview very interesting and explained much of what I see in the world and the church today. In the church it is how the Bible is interpreted, there being no objective truth only my truth. Usually my truth is what makes me feel good. This may be looked at as modern Marcionism. What I found most disturbing was the clip of Barack Obama. The audience was laughing as though it was a comedy skit rather than a something that is serious and is important.

They're pretty close to getting it but, as is likely for theists, they sidestepped epistemology and also presupposed value in "authority". What's truly needed is not "authority" but "alignment", which can be achieved by submission to authority, but epistemology and history show that that doesn't reliably produce good outcomes and rather typically produces bad outcomes. Alignment towards outcomes that are good for a group (a prerequisite of which is alignment towards truths) is best achieved via collective decision-making through some form of democratic system (given sufficient implementation and operation of an information ecosystem to facilitate a democratic system functioning properly, which is arguably the primary problem in our current society). The idea that any and all truth can only come from Jesus leaves many questions unanswered and, with so many questions unanswered, we would get the extreme of his concern about people fighting over all sorts of disagreements and there wouldn't be enough coordination (i.e. alignment) to support a functional society. Physics shows us that this universe operates with simultaneous relativity and objectivity. That applies to all information in the universe, because all information exists as relationships of energy which are all bound by that combination of relativity and objectivity. There is no absolute objectivity, it's constrained by relativity (and other properties of the universe). Also, I love the irony of him complaining about people not being willing to accept that they're wrong... 😅 hilarious from Christians
