Don't people realise it's the same as the Sochan experiment? They are asking him to shoot 7 3s a game because they want him to be able to hit them later down the line. They are tanking while developing him the hard way. He's not gonna play that bad the whole season because right now it's by design
@austinclubb209325 күн бұрын
He is 7 6, he doesn't need to shoot threes. He can be an Anthony Davis level player who is one of the best defensive players and can hit an occasional three, but he needs to shoot those mid ranges and rebound, get free throws. People hated on Kristapz Porzingis for shooting threes but are ok with Victor who is a significantly worse three point shoot even at the start of their careers.

As a spurs fan that has watched every second of Wemby since he was drafted, you really hit every beat assessing his situation, Kenny. From the development standpoint, to the playcalling, to his HIGH CENTER OF GRAVITY (never seen anyone even mention this issue, props to you), there's a lot of reasons to this slow start for him. A lot more complex than just saying "why is tall guy not in the paint". He's a 1 of 1 player and that takes time, really good video.

Wemby is the clear exception to the rule. He is poised as the face of the NBA and we have no idea what to expect yet. Wemby needs to adapt to playing 30 to 35 mins...an extra few minutes per game is a big deal. This isn't garbage time minutes either.

I’m curious if this is just a player development thing they’re doing with him. In an interview with Coach Pop before he got sick, he said that they want him to be able to do everything, it’s just that they can’t do it all at the same time. It feels like they want him to shoot more 3s this season but I have a feeling it will not be for the whole season, just like the Sochan PG experiment last year. Usually, Spurs coaching changes at the 25th or 30th game, that’s when they stopped the Sochan experiment and that was also when they moved Wemby to center after playing him at PF at the start of the season last year.

I think the statement that he is not an impactful offensive player is completely ridiculous. There aren't many players in the NBA who draws in attention from defenses like Wemby does. Everytime he gets the ball in the paint, there are least 2-3 people right around him, and sometimes all 5 defensive players are inside the paint to help on Wemby. They'd rather live with a Champagnie 3 (shooting 39%), or a CP3 3 (shooting 41%), than let Wemby go 1-1 in the paint.

If this report is true, that scout needs to be fired. Clearly has zero concept on how the game works. Wemby is a 2nd year player and in his rookie year, he took a mid season jump dominating every single big man that was put in front of him...on a minutes restriction. Is this scout seriously suggesting wemby won't have a sophomore year jump almost equivalent to a full year jump like last year? The game is moving to maximizing 3s...see Jimmy high rollers new video how's there's been a HUGE jump in 3p attempts, by design. Spurs aren't blind to the idea they don't have a championship level team yet. So why not continue developing him to the new norm so when he does enter year 3 or 4 and the spurs put together their future chip squad...wemby is already ready to compete for a chip. At age 23. That's the plan and they're sticking to it. AND wemby is getting at least one year with Chris Paul, one of the highest IQ players of the modern generation ever. Wemby didn't have that vet last year to learn the business side of the game and how to let it come to him. Cp3 is gonna speed that development up every single day. Idc what people say about Cp3, he was in the conversation for goat pg for more than half his career

Some quick notes about Wemby's 3pt shooting from last season -He shot over 40% after the All Star break last year -He shot over 40% off the dribble for the entire season -He shot nearly 50% on step backs for the season -He shot only 26% on catch and shoot He clearly has the potential to be an elite 3pt shooter if he can figure out the c&s. He probably has some weird mechanical quirk due to his proportions and they just want to get him as many reps as possible right now since the team is likely a play-in team at best. He went 6/9 against the Jazz last night, so the league better pray he hasn't turned the corner on his slump to start the season.
@Ebriel000000021 күн бұрын
You're perfectly right and it's very important. His shooting mechanics are very good (he had the best step back 3pt % of the league last season) and if he struggles with c&s, that's something he can improve easily... as he showed in the last 2 games (12 3pt made on 21 tries). We already know he can be good under the rim but his frame isn't really good for that (even if his lengh is). The guy is 20 : let Spurs develop him quietly. He is a player for tomorrow, not for today.

Victor's potential is nothing like a Giannis or Durant...he's a subpar version of both athletically and shooting-wise, HOWEVER, as a big man that moves like he does, what he can develop into (barring no injuries happen) is a swiss-army defensive anchor. As the NBA moves into the meta of positionless basketball (look at the Magic if you want the best sample size of what is to come), we're seeing a higher skill-level where it's mandatory for every star player to be a threat on all three levels. Victor fits this mold half way, while also carrying the role of the traditional center. I'm not worried about him at all, the Spurs have brought in the right people to teach him the game. The more curious question overall though is if Wemby was to build his frame and start posting, will we see the resurrection of the hook shot? If he's able to do that, then we truly have come full circle and the best basketball has yet to be played.

Huh? The fact that he's shooting 22.6% from 3 and 41.3% from the field makes you not all concerned? You can call that "this good"?
@thedrinkerofH2O24 күн бұрын
@@nicksavov5027They are making him take every shot he can, contested or not, this is obviously an experimental process rn, he won’t be having these low percentages forever. Remember how he was behind Chet in the roty race for the majority of the last season’s beginning? Then he won the roty unanimously, I’m expecting a similar situtation this year as well.

Most young players have “go-to” skills but wemby is so good at a lot of things that he has to master 10 things that he’s equally good at. Most guys, especially early on, only get significantly better at their strengths until the league forces them to learn counter off of that strength. Wemby is trying to learned the counter while developing several skills. When comes together he’ll be able to do thing people only do in practice in-game. It will come

I agree n the fact they ranked him 11 in top 100 shows that these analysts don’t know ball or they chose to ignore the pattern that every NbA goes through which is the sophomore Slump just so they can market victor to be this Demi god that’s just on a small market team
@thewriter876223 күн бұрын
It’s crazy how people are saying he’s being disappointing when this is par for the course for most players. Sophomore slumps exist for a reason. Your capabilities are tested as people are trying new schemes to slow you down. We see that teams are trapping him when he’s in the post and if it was by everyone else’s design, he’d just be a post scorer. If he can develop a 3 ball, he can be a virtually unstoppable player. So use a time where the team is gonna lose and develop those skills

I feel like Wemby chucking so many 3s is smart. I think the spurs are deciding again this year that it doesn’t matter if they win, and they’d rather give Wemby as many reps as possible to improve at things he’s not as strong at yet. Not to mention it helps protect him from injury in the short term. The post play will be there once they need it

Except the rest of the team is figuring out how to win games without involving him in the offense. He is legitimately hurting his team by constantly demanding the ball.

Both Pop and Wemby said that they'll focus heavily on developping Wemby guard skills and three point shot this season, therefore Wemby is indeed trying to develop his three point shot and his guard skills, f-ing surprise am I right ? The whole thing about Wemby is that he has the potential to become an extremely versatile player (key word is potential here), that's why they're working on that, and not just making him catch lobs under the basket. Yea the Spurs would be better right now if he was playing as a somewhat traditionnal big, but what's the point ? Being 11th instead of 14th in the west at the end of the season ? The point is for the Spurs to be good in a couple of years, not right now Of course anyone have the right to think that this is not how they should do it, but well, I'm pretty sure Pop knows a thing or two about developping players, especially european players In 5 years, if Wemby reaches his full potential, the same guys who are sh-ing on him now will start praising him and saying "told you he'll be good"

People really don't understand experimenting with players while you're still building your team up to compete. Spurs are not in line to win anything at the moment, the team is still very young and this is the best time to have him trying different things out.

Experts that said Wemby gonna be the best player in the nba this season are sooooooo dumb. I bet he would become real mvp (not who is chosen, who really is mvp 'cause they might hate on him; for example kobe (or lebron idc) in 2006-2007 season) in his 4th or 5th year.

They aren't focused on winning. They are focused on his development, they want him to shoot 3s to improve at it. They want him to be unstoppable, if he gets to a 36% 3pt shooter there's not really much anyone can do to guard him. Best to try and develop in the early years than doing it whilst trying to win championships

Wemby doesn’t want to just be an inevitable post scorer, he wants to be KD with Steph’s 3s, and since the next draft is so high-value, they’re letting him lean into that. I think they probably won’t really start trying to compete until next season.

Man Thank the Lord for people like you. You realize exactly whats going on with him. I’ve been saying that everyone just needs to HOP OFF HIS MEAT BRO. Like the sports media/ESPN isn’t helping him at all trying to make him the next big thing so soon as of right now. People put so many expectations on him saying if he’s not in MVP conversation this year then he’s a disappointment. Which is INSANE bro. The Spurs aren’t anywhere near a contending team or a team that trust each other mentally or physically on the court every game. Yet ESPN is STILL putting him on National television every once in a while. Even JOKIC said the media is d riding him and we just need to GIVE HIM TIME. But noooooo, everybody expects him to be this glorified out of this world super human at such a young age when he’s obviously still very raw as an overall player. But he’s gonna be totally fine man the best players in the league have already said he’s 100% the future of this sport. No need to belittle him just because he’s still trying to find his groove
@juicelord479225 күн бұрын
His ceiling is still high, yes. He is a good player, yes. But I’m still disappointed in his play this far offensively. The Spurs forcing him to the perimeter in hopes of his game developing out there could turn out bad. Dealing with defensive pressure or double teaming stars has ALWAYS been the game plan and isn’t an excuse. Offensively, he has no real bag or go to moves that he can build from. Hopefully, he’ll figure it out or he’ll be another “what-if”

Spurs need more 3PT shooters who can play defense and they will dominate. Can you imagine VW on the Suns D'Antoni team? If VW-Sochan-Castle-Vassell-CP3 played 65 games together they would win 50 games. But now Sochan is out 8 weeks and Pop may never roam the sidelines again. So Spurs will be tanking for two high lottery picks.
