Great vid guys. Really helped my install. Turned out perfect. Plus I did the steering control module which was a snap. The Axxccess box by Metra looks at your stereo and car and programs itself. A warning to Rx8 owners with a BOSE system. There is a factory amp and don’t forget to run the blue and white wire to the amp trigger (usually blue and white too) of the stereo system. After cramming all that wiring in I had to take it all back out and hook up that wire on the harness. Beat the crap out of my hands. Definitely trim the dash out. I put that football thing beneath the stereo which is directly behind where the ash tray goes. It’s out of the way under there and works out great. Awesome install video. Thanks!!

Not sure if you are still replying to comments but i am working on this now and i am at those 3 wires for speed reverse etc. I have a manual rx8 and i will be adding a backup camera at the same time to my rx8. Question is that yes you do not connect the reverse wire for manual but if its not connected, will the radio know when to switch to the backup camera? Or do i run the wires to the obd2 port?

I bought one of these kits used, bet it didn't come with the side brackets. Might have to fab some for myself, doesn't seem to be a way to buy them separately. Excellent video!

Those three wires at 9 minutes 20 seconds in that Metra stated to connect to the OBDII if your unit has a sat nav. You seem to state it’s only for the reverse is that correct? I have a pioneer system which has google maps built in which I want to use. Will it still work if I don’t connect them? I have the parking brake by pass module wired up. The other thing is my metra kit came with the wires already Tessa wrapped and there is two green wires but they are both the same shade of green so I am not sure which one to connect to the parking brake on the stereo. In all honest the parking brake cable is the last cable defeating me. It has a red cap on the end which looks like it cut into another wire so the bypass and metra kit and hand brake all connect to the 1 wire?

I wish I had seen this video before doing my rx8 install. I had the hardest time getting all that stuff in there with the radio and I had the steering wheel controller too. I didn't think about cutting anything out, I left everything in place and used plastic pin in the back to keep the radio from moving up and down.

Hi Dean, Your video was very helpful and provided great details. There's one thing that I wasn't able to do is connect my steering wheel controls to the radio. I have a tried to look for the wire for this car and can't seem to find it. It would mean the work if you could assist on that. Thank you and great work!

Installed a metra kit and Kenwood double din in my rx8, as well as 2 10in subs. Sometimes I get perfect audio. Sometimes I get a quiet popping from my speakers, and the only audio I get is through my subs which are plugged in using av into the back of the Kenwood. What could be the issue?

I just would like some advice do I need to put a switch in there to shut the amps off when I want to shut them off or is there something that I can do through the receiver in the dashboard to take care of it
@Cadody216 жыл бұрын
Jerry Degraffenreid This is easy to do and great if you have kids or just need to shut them off for whatever reason. Tools needed to do this: Wire stripper/crimper Two female insulated quick disconnects 1 SPST switch. You want one that a) has the make portion of the connector on the bottom and b) is something you want to mount in your car. To install this, follow your remote wire away from the headunit towards the amp in question and cut the wire, strip it back half inch on each side and crimp one connector on each side. Plug in the switch and test.

There are 4 mounting screw locations on the bottom and front of the HVAC controls and mounting points on the Metra bezel that will accept those screw locations.

@DatDarkOne5 жыл бұрын
The S2 RX-8 has a different radio that doesn't tie into the climate control like the S1 version does. It's pretty much a straight install without the control module or the extra wiring. The install kit is also much cheaper for the S2 because of this.
@johnalenwork535 жыл бұрын

@DatDarkOne5 жыл бұрын
@@johnalenwork53 I myself own the S1 RX-8 and did tons of research to find every method for replacing the Bose radio. This was when I learned the differences between the S1 and S2 radios and metra kits and why. Which the main and important difference being that the HVAC controls don't directly connect to the radio in the S2 like it does in the S1 version.

I wanted one of those so bad but totally bailed once I read about all the failed motors at 20K miles and $20 spark plugs, abysmal fuel economy, etc. They are sexy tho
@Zero-ks3pc6 жыл бұрын
ADR do general maintenance on it, use premium fuel and check oil level every other fill up or so if you don’t beat on it and it’s fine. It’s not the engine, it’s the owner. You run any engine hot you can blow it. You run cheap low grade fuel in any high compression engine and you can blow it (preignition, knock kills pistons too). Just gain knowledge of whatever engine is in your car and do everything it needs and don’t exceed its limits and you will usually not have problem, from air cooled vws, rotaries, etc. I have had 3 rx7s and 2 rx8s; from new engines to ones exceeding 100k miles. I never had a problem, I just change cars a lot. Currently in a Shinka rx8; but will be getting a 70s Pontiac in the next year or so and the 8 will go to a family member. You basically listened to tabloid sensationalist stories from people; but the truth is, it’s ignorance or arrogance that got most of them. Not knowing they need to be more responsible with fluid level, maintenance, overall systems and component health, and that is about it really. It’s a major purchase, be responsible; it’s like getting a dog then bitching they require more upkeep and interaction and upkeep than say a betta fish in a 10 gallon tank ... but what’s worse, it’s more like they got the dog but then neglected it until it got sick. Not a perfect analogy, but it’s good enough. You run any engine low on oil and let it get old enough to lose its viscosity you are going to have problems. Very rarely in my nearly 25 years of owning and dealing with others who owned them, have had an engine blow, even my hs sweetheart had on and didn’t take good care of it and it didn’t break down with over 130k on the odo. I average 19 mpg. My old Pontiac got 9. I get 21-24 mpg highway; so ... plenty of cars do, this is a sports sedan. The spark plugs are not $20; less than $10 and you need 2 leading, two trailing. All 4 more than $20 though. Probably best you didn’t get it, rather people who do proper research buy those cars than someone who basically didn’t try to understand what was actually going on. It’s like the tire thing years ago; yeah, the tires could be improved but most of the failures dealt with people with greatly under inflated pressures; so the tires were being abused. All the extra flex and friction causes a ton more heat and wear, thus destroyed the tires. It isn’t always the product, but the users; sometimes both, sometimes it’s a lack of getting the right info across in the right way. So, basically, less the rx8/renesis rotary fault, most of the weight lies between the customer naivety or laziness, the customer ignorance lays on the dealership and Mazda for not setting up a process to inform the new buyer of essential concepts of how and why the motor works and how to keep it healthy; used cars the onus is solely on the buyer in private and non Mazda lots to learn the vehicle fully.
