I enjoyed the whole video! You mentioned something very important and that I always tell my friends and subscribers: if you want your old vehicle (bus, bug, whatever) to make both legs of your road trip, you MUST have confidence on it. And in order to build it, you gotta make sure all potential issues are addressed. Some guys say breakdowns are part of the adventures with any old VW, but I beg to differ. Breakdowns are dangerous: someone could run you over, you might be attacked by a psycho or something. You really want a hassle free road trip and keep the breakdowns number as close to zero as possible.

Anyone who has broken down knows the stress involved regarding personal safety but also the risk of further loss to the vehicle if you must leave it behind. Thanks for highlighting the issue. Solid episode! I like your trick of doing the field repair with tools you have in the bus. Today I got stuck where I couldn’t take off my wheel because I didn’t pack a 19mm and I had a frustrated wife in the car. If I had the right tool I would have been back on the road in two min, but I had to call AAA.

Oh man that stinks, but happens to all of us at some point. After I bought the RV, I drove a total of a half mile before breaking down. The story goes on but ended on a flatbed. I hope this tactic brings you much success, and thanks for being here!

Normal growing pains, bro! All these projects need some minor tweaking at first but all in all it’s a success! Go with regular cork valve cover seals; don’t use any sealant; a little grease and you’re good to go. Great success; especially because it’s a chick magnet....🤣😂 Cool music, by the way....😉

Thanks Vayabroder, yeah at least a little of this is to be expected. Having everything clean makes it a lot easier to open up again, so no worries there. No complaints about using cork gaskets, these seem to be living up to the task. The effect this bus has on people has made me feel social again in a socially distant world. Had to chuckle at the weatherstrip adhesive adventure, my experience with the stuff is much the same, works great, but is very messy. There is a clear version of the stuff, just as messy, but not as noticeable when it gets all over everything.😁

Yeah Robert, wasn't that weird?!? The goo on the brake shoes was a little sticky so it was kind of squeaking against the drum. I adjusted the breaks for a slight drag so it was within reaching distance to make that contact. That wasn't a real problem but I worried about the integrity of the shoe after being saturated in it's past. New shoes (eventually) were the way to go. "Drive - Fix - Repeat" perfect summary of owning an old VW bus. I got the same tires on mine. I found the cork valve cover gaskets I have are not an even size. They are different from gasket to gasket and vary in size from the top to the bottom. I try to find two close to the same size and and sometimes I stack two up to get a tight seal. Gluing valve cover gaskets? Got rid of the points and front drum brakes. Way better.

Hey Patrick! Thanks for your thoughts. These Hankook R8 tires aren't fancy but they have appropriately stiff sidewalls and seem to hold up. Our @VWLife friends in Texas like the General Grabber tires- may have to try those out sometime. Lots of variation from one VW part to the another- I guess it makes sense that valve cover gaskets are that way too. I'm with you on the electronic ignition. Thanks for watching!

Did not expect that with the brakes. I wonder why those contaminated and cleaned shoes did not work ? Was it a mechanical issue - out of spec in one or more dimensions ? Was it an eccentricity issue where the clean part wore down faster and uneven contact ? Hmmn....interesting because that is what I would have done too - spray them clean and sand them, and Bob's your uncle. Those wheels still look great ! Wish my second 67 was this clean. It's a deluxe, field rescue....hmm, black armrests ? oh it's coming off ? there are grey ? ewww. I used a hose on the INSIDE !

Hey DanTheManIOM, whatever contaminated the shoes (brake fluid or wheel bearing grease) would rise to the surface with some use and was very tacky; the noise would resonate through the brake springs and backing plate. I'm not sure that it was a problem by itself but with the knowledge that the shoes may have been compromised and the annoying noise it was enough to make replacing the shoes to be worthwhile. Thanks for the kudos regarding the wheels; I like the utilitarian look of a painted steel rim. Your '67 sounds like a project but aren't they all?!? Thanks for watching!

I like how she asked for the preferred nomenclature, very respectful lol One question, when I heard the front hub noise I felt like I knew what it was instantly from a previous experience of my own but we came up with different solutions. My experience was the brake spring being too close to the intra-drum brake line and the sound coming from their interference when vibrating. Did you reuse your brake springs or replace them with the new shoes?

You said it well Adam; the "smiles per gallon" thing is for realsies and I enjoy the interactions that would not have otherwise happened. Thanks for sharing your experience with the noise I was chasing. I believe the springs characterized the sound I was hearing resonating through the backing plates. My investigation focused on the source of vibration, which I think was the sticky goo on the shoes rubbing against the drum. The brakes were adjusted before that test drive so the shoes were hovering extremely close to the drum's friction surface. Due to a slight out-of-round- condition they would make intermittent contact and cause the vibration like dragging a finger across tacky-dry paint. With the slight difference in semantics (noise vs. vibration), it seems like we may have been chasing the same thing. I reused the springs but it's possible they were re-installed without the interference you described. Either way, the contaminated shoes had to go and I haven't questioned the lack of noise... taking "yes" for an answer, if you will. Thanks for the question!

I had problems with the orange silicone valve cover gaskets. They kept leaking. Went back to the cork gaskets and no more leaks.

Yeah Jeff, this first attempt was a dud. I'll eventually try out that other set to see if I have any luck, but glad to have a method (cork) that works well until then. Thanks for checking out the video!

Thanks Cathy and Greg, I'm not sure what color it is; I think of it as maroon (not a good judge of shades) but some people call it orange. Seems to match the rust well! It was painted before the previous owner had it, so there is not much known history. Wax Red sounds good to me!

Excellent stuff! Those silicone valve cover gaskets aren’t great are they? Go with cork everytime for me with just a smear of oil to hold them in place.

Great video! My question is, how are the elephant ear mirrors? I want to replace mine on my '65 but am worried they are going to vibrate like one set I installed a few years ago. I bought them from WW. Just wondering how yours are. Thank you. Keep the great videos coming. They are very inspirational and motivate me to get my a$$ moving on my bus!!!

Thanks Rich! The mirrors are OK; they give a decent view of traffic and I haven't had to readjust after the initial setup. These are the stainless ones from CIP1. Not sure if I got lucky or if these are the real deal. Glad to hear you're out working on the bus- keep it up and let us know how it goes!

Just told my wife that I am going to find a 1970 bus like the one I had in college. Pay 10k for it spend another 10K in parts and another 10K in tools and then sell it when she makes me get rid of it for 7K

Yeah.... really wanted to open it up but knew that wasn't right for the project. So far the risk is working out but may still regret it someday.
