"We Have Overcome" - Mark Durkan's speech on the publication of the Saville report

Amongst the most moving speeches ever to grace the Commons. Durkan is a political hero of mine. I saw him speak at a school in Derry as a 15 year old kid. He's the reason I fell in love with politics. I went on to study it at Uni. Let's not kid ourselves, mind. There were unspeakable injustices suffered on both sides. I hope the Unionist community (of whose number I count myself) accept these findings as an important step in the process of putting the past behind us, once and for all.

I cried like a child that day in Derry. My heart was breaking with sadness and warm with joy at the same time. Mark you spoke what we all were unable to put into words. Derry died that day. Now maybe our city and our people can live again . City if culture 2013 :)

@tyronepat1 'recruitment propaganda for dissident republicans'... really? that sounds like an evaluation from some generic BBC report. every republican, nationalist, unionist, dog in the street knows what GC is like at this stage. his reaction was depressingly predictable - he's not changed the record for 30 odd years so his opinions are hardly worthy material for an IRA recruitment drive. most young people know he's a nasty part of unionism, not the face of unionism itself. shame he's my MLA.

Unarmed people took to the streets to protest against a sectarian Government that treated them as second class citizens, disenfenachised them and gerrymandered the electoral areas to ensure they could never elect a representative to parliment, and were gunned down.
