Congratulations! Starlink for us (Northern New England, about 44.6 N lat) has been nothing less than a game changer for us! I won't document the costhorror and crap-service we had previously received from Hughes Net Satellite, nor the 0.5 - 3 mbs type service we were throttled down to for which we charged the Queen's ransom . Starlink swept-aside all that, and has been a stellar performer the instant we put the dish outside and plugged it in. I dare say the high point of 2021 was breaking our contract with Hughes Net. For comparison purposes our average speeds are 75-150 mbs down, 10-30 mbs up, and 25-35 ms latency.

Lots of people commenting about how their fibre broadband is so much cheaper - completely failing to understand why this is such a significant option for many people who will never get fibre. We are paying £70+ for 30mbps max with a 100gb monthly limit from Tooway satellite internet - it was that or £30/month for BT for 1.5mbps maximum. This tech is still just being rolled out and will only get cheaper as they can add more customers. We’re currently waiting for a local company to add a relay mast to their microwave network which will give us 50mbps with no bandwidth limit for £35/month. If Starlink had been a few months further along their roll out we’d probably go with it. Thanks for sharing your initial experience.

Interesting video. Even though you live in a rural area your comments apply to lots in built up area’s. My estate is all detached houses with copper from the cabinet supply. The highest speed I get is 50Mbps and that is the max the system can handle. Doesn’t matter your provider that’s the limit. My cousin is a planning engineer for a company that does fibre optic internet installation. He deals with big areas , complete estates, industrial sites etc. We will not get fibre optics for many years. It’s a simple case of financial returns. The provider wants compact housing , multiple subscribers and our estate is the exact opposite of that. Housing estates my cousin works on can get 300 Mbps for domestic use. Pretty impressive. I would pay a premium to get a good speed. Cannot see space X going cheap, they have a lot of hardware to pay for.

Great video. I live on an estate in North Manchester. The estate was built in 2000. The average speed at the top of the estate, nearest to the junction box is 40mbps. The slowest, at the bottom of the estate were I live is 34mbps. Speeds vary at peak times. Bolted onto our estate last year was a new development of 15 houses. For some unknown and bizarre reason, they now average 80mbps. Granted their cable goes via another way to another junction box to the local exchange, but gives you an idea just how disjointed speeds are here. I'm excited about this Starlink though but will wait until the price drops.

I am fortunate to be on a great financial tariff, with unlimited data with no throttling. Currently using 4G, when 5G arrives in the Welsh valleys it is going to be better again. I like the idea of Starlink for a global infrastructure, however the monthly price is very high, but I hope will support those less fortunate. My only other gripe from a astronomical point of view is how much observations may be obsucred by the number of Starlink satellites needed circulating around the planet, along with other debris that is already out there. I would have liked to see the dish tracking the satellites. How does it manage to switch from one satellite to the next without having to slew from horizon to horizon? Does it move continuously all the time you are connected?
@andynormancx3 жыл бұрын
It barely moves at all. The dish uses something called a phased array, which is made up of hundreds of tiny antennas. With clever physics and electronics this allows it to point its signal at the satellite it is talking to, without having to physically move the dish.

Mate, if you say you're getting drop outs on your standard broadband service that would imply there's a fault on the line. Required band width for 1080p is around 5mbps, 4k requires around 25 mbps, gaming on console requires around 5 mbps, these numbers, you could have internet service of 10 mbps or internet services of over 60 mbps, it does not mean that the higher that number the faster your internet, the higher the mbps the bigger the band width

Hi, Great video. I’m interested - I also live in a Rurel area - lots of trees - do you think these will interfere with the satellite signal or does the dish mostly point straight up wards at 90°?
@Doobrey3 жыл бұрын
from my experience and the community, trees can cause issues. It is suggested it is mounted on the roof with a clear view of the sky

I'm just curious. How much does the landline cost? Here in Aus you get, roughly, 3Mb for $50 a month. Politicians made the decisions. They have fibre to the node that I pay for.

Not sure the economics of this will ever stack up, will be interesting to see if it does get faster presumably the bottle neck will be the base stations and back haul onto the internet rather than the uplink to the satellites

Does it give you an IP address that is recognised as in the UK? My question being will it work with BBC iPlayer and services such as this that rely on a UK IP address? Thanks for clarifying. I have my order in for Starlink now! Cant wait!

Shouldn't you connect to the router's RJ45 to get a proper speed test (not via its WiFi)? As a comparitive test, it looks good though! 😊👍

As it is sort of dishy mcdish face, pointing to the sky it will fill with water when it rains. Does it have drain holes in it?

Tbh... its all about what you are comparing too... if you live in the sticks and have like dial up / barely broadband (like 1 - 10Mbps) or rely on an existing satellite broadband provider the cost is either high for the shite speed (in case of a fixed line) or sky high for shite speed (in the case of satellite providers) its very worth it. It just isn't really aimed for people close to cities who can access better fixed line speed as that will always be cheaper.

I’m lucky to have gigaclear fibre direct to home, after truly dreadful 12mbit/s on a good day BT broadband. I found a notable difference between the standard Gigaclear wireless and wired performance, and also the accuracy of the speed test software, which seemed to be capped in your test. I ended up not using the standard Gigaclear WiFi and replaced the WiFi with Gig e connected BT Mesh, which gave best speed in the house but also range down the garden. I’d be very interested if you could repeat the test, with a hard wired short run of Gig e cable and speed test software which isn’t capped. My gut feeling is you’ll get a higher download speed than 100Mb/s. I’m interested in using Starlink in another location, so would be very interested in your results.
