I’ve worked for gas companies for 7 years as a distribution pipe welder. It’s always nice to see contractors with locating devices. Gas companies most likely will never tell you the depth of their pipe because of slight inaccuracies with locators (and the blame game that would surly happen if something gets hit) but if you have your own you can save yourself some time hand digging and still be safe. Also get a utility probe rod to help find lines if you live somewhere without rocky top soil.

I’ll look into a utility probe for sure. I especially like it because it gets louder as we dig deeper. Once the tone is ringing full blast we know we’re right on it.

That hound dog works pretty good. We use the same one for tracing pole lights and feeders inside old buildings

Called 811, twice. Job was going slow. More than 30 days between digs. They didn’t find or mark the line either time. Marked our area as no utilities. We found it with a mini-x. They sent us a bill for repair, fire, and police call out. Called third time. Still didn’t mark it. We had to get a lawyer involved for them to drop the bill. *always* call 811. As close to your dig time as possible. Always verify their work.
